Quantitative trait loci for bone traits segregating independently of those for growth in an F-2 broiler X layer cross
An F broiler-layer cross was phenotyped for 18 skeletal traits at 6, 7 and 9 weeks of age and genotyped with 120 microsatellite markers. Interval mapping identified 61 suggestive and significant QTL on 16 of the 25 linkage groups for 16 traits. Thirty-six additional QTL were identified when the assumption that QTL were fixed in the grandparent lines was relaxed. QTL with large effects on the lengths of the tarsometatarsus, tibia and femur, and the weights of the tibia and femur were identified on GGA4 between 217 and 249 cM. Six QTL for skeletal traits were identified that did not co-locate with genome wide significant QTL for body weight and two body weight QTL did not coincide with skeletal trait QTL. Significant evidence of imprinting was found in ten of the QTL and QTL x sex interactions were identified for 22 traits. Six alleles from the broiler line for weight- and size-related skeletal QTL were positive. Negative alleles for bone quality traits such as tibial dyschondroplasia, leg bowing and tibia twisting generally originated from the layer line suggesting that the allele inherited from the broiler is more protective than the allele originating from the layer
Block bond-order potential as a convergent moments-based method
The theory of a novel bond-order potential, which is based on the block
Lanczos algorithm, is presented within an orthogonal tight-binding
representation. The block scheme handles automatically the very different
character of sigma and pi bonds by introducing block elements, which produces
rapid convergence of the energies and forces within insulators, semiconductors,
metals, and molecules. The method gives the first convergent results for
vacancies in semiconductors using a moments-based method with a low number of
moments. Our use of the Lanczos basis simplifies the calculations of the band
energy and forces, which allows the application of the method to the molecular
dynamics simulations of large systems. As an illustration of this convergent
O(N) method we apply the block bond-order potential to the large scale

Superfield covariant analysis of the divergence structure of noncommutative supersymmetric QED
Commutative supersymmetric Yang-Mills is known to be renormalizable for
, while finite for . However, in the
noncommutative version of the model (NCSQED) the UV/IR mechanism gives rise
to infrared divergences which may spoil the perturbative expansion. In this
work we pursue the study of the consistency of NCSQED by working
systematically within the covariant superfield formulation. In the Landau
gauge, it has already been shown for that the gauge field
two-point function is free of harmful UV/IR infrared singularities, in the
one-loop approximation. Here we show that this result holds without
restrictions on the number of allowed supersymmetries and for any arbitrary
covariant gauge. We also investigate the divergence structure of the gauge
field three-point function in the one-loop approximation. It is first proved
that the cancellation of the leading UV/IR infrared divergences is a gauge
invariant statement. Surprisingly, we have also found that there exist
subleading harmful UV/IR infrared singularities whose cancellation only takes
place in a particular covariant gauge. Thus, we conclude that these last
mentioned singularities are in the gauge sector and, therefore, do not
jeopardize the perturbative expansion and/or the renormalization of the theory.Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures. Minor correction
Cultured fish cells metabolize octadecapentaenoic acid (all-cis delta3,6,9,12,15–18∶5) to octadecatetraenoic acid (all-cis delta6,9,12,15–18∶4) via its 2-trans intermediate (trans delta2, all-cis delta6,9,12,15–18∶5)
Octadecapentaenoic acid (all-cis Δ3,6,9,12,15-18:5; 18:5n-3) is an unusual fatty acid found in marine dinophytes, haptophytes and prasinophytes. It is not present at higher trophic levels in the marine food web but its metabolism by animals ingesting algae is unknown. Here we studied the metabolism of 18:5n-3 in cell lines derived from turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Cells were incubated in the presence of approximately 1 μM [U-14C] 18:5n-3 methyl ester or [U-14C] 18:4n-3 (octadecatetraenoic acid; all-cis Δ6,9,12,15-18:4) methyl ester, both derived from the alga Isochrysis galbana grown in H14CO3, and also with 25 μM unlabelled 18:5n-3 or 18:4n-3. Cells were also incubated with 25 μM trans Δ2, all-cis Δ6,9,12,15-18:5 (2-trans 18:5n-3) produced by alkaline isomerization of 18:5n-3 chemically synthesized from docosahexaenoic acid (all-cis Δ4,7,10,13,16,19-22:6; 22:6n-3). Radio- and mass analyses of total fatty acids extracted from cells incubated with 18:5n-3 were consistent with this fatty acid being rapidly metabolized to 18:4n-3 which was then elongated and further desaturated to eicosatetraenoic acid (all-cis Δ8,11,14,17,19-20:4; 20:4n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (all-cis Δ5,8,11,14,17-20:5; 20:5n-3). Similar mass increases of 18:4n-3 and its elongation and further desaturation products occurred in cells incubated with 18:5n-3 or 2-trans 18:5n-3. We conclude that 18:5n-3 is readily converted biochemically to 18:4n-3 via a 2-trans 18:5n-3 intermediate generated by a Δ3,Δ2-enoyl-CoA-isomerase acting on 18:5n-3. Thus, 2-trans 18:5n-3 is implicated as a common intermediate in the β-oxidation of both 18:5n-3 and 18:4n-3
Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference

Analysis of the modes of energy consumption of the complex of an incoherent scattering of the institute of ionosphere of national academy of sciences and the ministry of education and science of Ukraine
У даній статті представлені результати аналізу режимів енергоспоживання комплексу некогерентного розсіяння Інституту іоносфери НАН і МОН України з метою вирішення проблеми підвищення енергоефективності науково-дослідного комплексу та створення енергоефективної системи електропостачання, яка забезпечить стійку роботу наукового обладнання для виконання дослідницьких програм НАН України. Описана система електроживлення комплексу та режими енергоспоживання комплексу. Описано пристрої радарної системи, а також найбільш потужні споживачі електроенергії, які споживають електроенергію на експериментальні і господарські потреби. Проаналізовано енергоспоживання комплексу некогерентного розсіяння за 2013 р. Отримано і представлено графіки середньої споживаної потужності (середньодобовий показник) і середньої споживаної потужності в режимі вимірювань. Описана доцільність проведення робіт з оптимізації енергопостачання науково-дослідного комплексу Інституту іоносфери. Запропоновано можливі заходи для зниження економічної вартості проведення експериментів з дослідження іоносфери науково-дослідного комплексу некогерентного розсіяння. Проведено аналіз робіт сучасних авторів з метою показати, що підвищення ефективності функціонування систем електропостачання є актуальною проблемою сучасних досліджень.This article presents the results of the analysis of the energy consumption modes of the incoherent scattering complex of the Institute of Ionosphere of the National Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to solve the problem of increasing the energy efficiency of a research complex and creating an energy efficient power supply system that will ensure the sustainability of scientific equipment for research programs
of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The system of power supply of the complex and modes of power consumption of the complex are described. The devices of the radar system are described, as well as the most powerful consumers of electricity, which consume electricity for experimental and economic needs. The energy consumption of the incoherent scattering complex in 2013 is analyzed. Graphs of the average power consumption (daily average) and average power consumption in measurement modes were obtained and presented. The feasibility of work to optimize the energy supply of the research complex of the institute of the ionosphere is described. Possible measures are proposed to reduce the economic cost of conducting experiments on the study of the ionosphere of an incoherent scattering research complex. Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
