Improving data quality monitoring via a partnership of technologies and resources between the CMS experiment at CERN and industry
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment dedicates significant effort to assess the quality of its data, online and offline. A real-time data quality monitoring system is in place to spot and diagnose problems as promptly as possible to avoid data loss. The a posteriori evaluation of processed data is designed to categorize it in terms of their usability for physics analysis. These activities produce data quality metadata. The data quality evaluation relies on a visual inspection of the monitoring features. This practice has a cost in term of human resources and is naturally subject to human arbitration. Potential limitations are linked to the ability to spot a problem within the overwhelming number of quantities to monitor, or to the lack of understanding of detector evolving conditions. In view of Run 3, CMS aims at integrating deep learning technique in the online workflow to promptly recognize and identify anomalies and improve data quality metadata precision. The CMS experiment engaged in a partnership with IBM with the objective to support, through automatization, the online operations and to generate benchmarking technological results. The research goals, agreed within the CERN Openlab framework, how they matured in a demonstration applic tion and how they are achieved, through a collaborative contribution of technologies and resources, are presented
Changing home and workplace in Victorian London : the life of Henry Jaques shirtmaker.
The paper uses unusually rich evidence from a manuscript life history written in 1901 from personal diaries to explore the changing relationship between home and workplace in Victorian London. The life history of Henry Jaques demonstrates the way in which decisions about employment and residence were related both to each other and to stages of the family life course. The uncertainty of work, lack of income to support a growing family, rising aspirations, the constant threat of illness, the ease of moving between rented property, close ties between home and workplace, the stresses produced by home working, and the attractions of suburbanization all interacted to shape the residential and employment history of Jaques and his family. The themes exemplified by this detailed life history were also relevant to many other people. Evidence collected from a large-scale project on lifetime residential histories is used to place the experiences of Henry Jaques in a broader context, and to show how they related to the changing social and economic structure of Victorian London
Rapid population decline in migratory shorebirds relying on Yellow Sea tidal mudflats as stopover sites
Migratory animals are threatened by human-induced global change. However, little is known about how stopover habitat, essential for refuelling during migration, affects the population dynamics of migratory species. Using 20 years of continent-wide citizen science data, we assess population trends of ten shorebird taxa that refuel on Yellow Sea tidal mudflats, a threatened ecosystem that has shrunk by >65% in recent decades. Seven of the taxa declined at rates of up to 8% per year. Taxa with the greatest reliance on the Yellow Sea as a stopover site showed the greatest declines, whereas those that stop primarily in other regions had slowly declining or stable populations. Decline rate was unaffected by shared evolutionary history among taxa and was not predicted by migration distance, breeding range size, non-breeding location, generation time or body size. These results suggest that changes in stopover habitat can severely limit migratory populations
Beam Test Results of the RADiCAL -- a Radiation Hard Innovative EM Calorimeter
High performance calorimetry conducted at future hadron colliders, such as
the FCC-hh, poses a significant challenge for applying current detector
technologies due to unprecedented beam luminosities and radiation fields.
Solutions include developing scintillators that are capable of separating
events at the sub-fifty picosecond level while also maintaining performance
after extreme and constant neutron and ionizing radiation exposure. The RADiCAL
is an approach that incorporates radiation tolerant materials in a sampling
'shashlik' style calorimeter configuration, using quartz capillaries filled
with organic liquid or polymer-based wavelength shifters embedded in layers of
tungsten plates and LYSO crystals. This novel design intends to address the
Priority Research Directions (PRD) for calorimetry listed in the DOE Basic
Research Needs (BRN) workshop for HEP Instrumentation. Here we report
preliminary results from an experimental run at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility
in June 2022. These tests demonstrate that the RADiCAL concept is capable of <

A Digital Repository and Execution Platform for Interactive Scholarly Publications in Neuroscience
The CARMEN Virtual Laboratory (VL) is a cloud-based platform which allows neuroscientists to store, share, develop, execute, reproduce and publicise their work. This paper describes new functionality in the CARMEN VL: an interactive publications repository. This new facility allows users to link data and software to publications. This enables other users to examine data and software associated with the publication and execute the associated software within the VL using the same data as the authors used in the publication. The cloud-based architecture and SaaS (Software as a Service) framework allows vast data sets to be uploaded and analysed using software services. Thus, this new interactive publications facility allows others to build on research results through reuse. This aligns with recent developments by funding agencies, institutions, and publishers with a move to open access research. Open access provides reproducibility and verification of research resources and results. Publications and their associated data and software will be assured of long-term preservation and curation in the repository. Further, analysing research data and the evaluations described in publications frequently requires a number of execution stages many of which are iterative. The VL provides a scientific workflow environment to combine software services into a processing tree. These workflows can also be associated with publications and executed by users. The VL also provides a secure environment where users can decide the access rights for each resource to ensure copyright and privacy restrictions are met
The higher education impact agenda, scientific realism and policy change: the case of electoral integrity in Britain
Pressures have increasingly been put upon social scientists to prove their economic, cultural and social value through ‘impact agendas’ in higher education. There has been little conceptual and empirical discussion of the challenges involved in achieving impact and the dangers of evaluating it, however. This article argues that a critical realist approach to social science can help to identify some of these key challenges and the institutional incompatibilities between impact regimes and university research in free societies. These incompatibilities are brought out through an autobiographical ‘insider-account’ of trying to achieve impact in the field of electoral integrity in Britain. The article argues that there is a more complex relationship between research and the real world which means that the nature of knowledge might change as it becomes known by reflexive agents. Secondly, the researchers are joined into social relations with a variety of actors, including those who might be the object of study in their research. Researchers are often weakly positioned in these relations. Some forms of impact, such as achieving policy change, are therefore exceptionally difficult as they are dependent on other actors. Strategies for trying to achieve impact are drawn out such as collaborating with civil society groups and parliamentarians to lobby for policy change
Dynamika „tworzenia-rynków” w szkolnictwie wyższym
This paper examines what to some is a well worked furrow; the processes and outcomes involved in what is typically referred to as ‘marketisation’ in the higher education sector. We do this through a case study of Newton University, where we reveal a rapid proliferation of market exchanges involving the administrative division of the university with the wider world. Our account of this process of ‘market making’ is developed in two (dialectically related) moves. First, we identify a range of market exchanges that have emerged in the context of wider ideological and political changes in the governance of higher education to make it a more globally–competitive producer of knowledge, and a services sector. Second, we explore the ways in which making markets involves a considerable amount of micro–work, such as the deployment of a range of framings, and socio–technical tools (Çalışkan and Callon 2009, 2010; Berndt and Boeckler 2012). Taken together, these market–making processes are recalibrating and remaking the structures, social relations and subjectivities, within and beyond the university and in turn reconstituting the university and the higher education sector.W niniejszym artykule przedstawiamy wyniki badania tego, co wiele osób uznało za dobrze już opracowaną niszę, a mianowicie procesów i rezultatów czegoś, co najczęściej określa się mianem ‘urynkowienia’ sektora szkolnictwa wyższego. Podejmujemy tę kwestię w oparciu o przygotowane przez nas studium przypadku Newton University, w kontekście którego odsłaniamy gwałtowne rozpowszechnienie się wymiany rynkowej między administracyjnymi sekcjami uniwersytetu i jego szerszym otoczeniem. Nasze podejście do procesu „tworzenia-rynku” rozwinięte zostało w dwóch (dialektycznie powiązanych ze sobą) krokach. Po pierwsze, rozpoznajemy zakres wymian rynkowych, wyłonionych w kontekście szerszych ideologicznych i politycznych przemian obszaru ładu instytucjonalnego szkolnictwa wyższego, których celem było uczynienie go bardziej konkurencyjnym wytwórcą wiedzy w skali globalnej, jak również sektorem usługowym. Po drugie, badamy sposoby, w jakie tworzenie rynków wymaga dużego nakładu mikro-pracy, takiej choćby jak zastosowanie szerokiego zakresu określonych ram czy narzędzi socjo-technicznych (Çalışkan, Callon 2009, 2010; Berndt, Boeckler 2012). Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV
Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States. Optimasi Portofolio Resiko Menggunakan Model Markowitz MVO Dikaitkan dengan Keterbatasan Manusia dalam Memprediksi Masa Depan dalam Perspektif Al-Qur`an
Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis
