    A continuum model of gas flows with localized density variations

    We discuss the kinetic representation of gases and the derivation of macroscopic equations governing the thermomechanical behavior of a dilute gas viewed at the macroscopic level as a continuous medium. We introduce an approach to kinetic theory where spatial distributions of the molecules are incorporated through a mean-free-volume argument. The new kinetic equation derived contains an extra term involving the evolution of this volume, which we attribute to changes in the thermodynamic properties of the medium. Our kinetic equation leads to a macroscopic set of continuum equations in which the gradients of thermodynamic properties, in particular density gradients, impact on diffusive fluxes. New transport terms bearing both convective and diffusive natures arise and are interpreted as purely macroscopic expansion or compression. Our new model is useful for describing gas flows that display non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium (rarefied gas flows), flows with relatively large variations of macroscopic properties, and/or highly compressible fluid flows

    COSMOLOGICAL GAMMA RAY BURSTS AND THE HIGHEST ENERGY COSMIC RAYS

    We discuss a scenario in which the highest energy cosmic rays (CR's) and cosmological γ\gamma-ray bursts (GRB's) have a common origin. This scenario is consistent with the observed CR flux above 1020eV10^{20}\text{eV}, provided that each burst produces similar energies in γ\gamma-rays and in CR's above 1020eV10^{20}\text{eV}. Protons may be accelerated by Fermi's mechanism to energies 1020eV\sim10^{20}\text{eV} in a dissipative, ultra-relativistic wind, with luminosity and Lorentz factor high enough to produce a GRB.     School improvement depends upon mediating the cultural conditions of learning as young people journey between their parochial worlds and the public world of cosmopolitan society. Governing bodies have a crucial role in including or diminishing the representation of different cultural traditions and in enabling or frustrating the expression of voice and deliberation of differences whose resolution is central to the mediation of and responsiveness to learning needs. A recent study of governing bodies in England and Wales argues that the trend to corporatising school governance will diminish the capacity of schools to learn how they can understand cultural traditions and accommodate them in their curricula and teaching strategies. A democratic, stakeholder model remains crucial to the effective practice of governing schools. By deliberating and reconciling social and cultural differences, governance constitutes the practices for mediating particular and cosmopolitan worlds and thus the conditions for engaging young people in their learning, as well as in the preparation for citizenship in civil society

    Madness decolonized?: Madness as transnational identity in Gail Hornstein’s Agnes’s Jacket

    The US psychologist Gail Hornstein’s monograph Agnes’s Jacket: A Psychologist’s Search for the Meanings of Madness (2009) is an important intervention in the identity politics of the mad movement. Hornstein offers a resignified vision of mad identity that embroiders the central trope of an “anti-colonial” struggle to reclaim the experiential world “colonized” by psychiatry. A series of literal and figurative appeals make recourse to the inner world and (corresponding) cultural world of the mad, as well as to the ethno-symbolic cultural materials of dormant nationhood. This rhetoric is augmented by a model in which the mad comprise a diaspora without an origin, coalescing into a single transnational community. The mad are also depicted as persons displaced from their metaphorical homeland, the “inner” world “colonized” by the psychiatric regime. There are a number of difficulties with Hornstein’s rhetoric, however. Her “ethnicity-and-rights” response to the oppression of the mad is symptomatic of Western parochialism, while her proposed transmutation of putative psychopathology from limit upon identity to parameter of successful identity is open to contestation. Moreover, unless one accepts Hornstein’s porous vision of mad identity, her self-ascribed insider status in relation to the mad community may present a problematic “re-colonization” of mad experience

    Should Research Ethics Encourage the Production of Cost-Effective Interventions?

    This project considers whether and how research ethics can contribute to the provision of cost-effective medical interventions. Clinical research ethics represents an underexplored context for the promotion of cost-effectiveness. In particular, although scholars have recently argued that research on less-expensive, less-effective interventions can be ethical, there has been little or no discussion of whether ethical considerations justify curtailing research on more expensive, more effective interventions. Yet considering cost-effectiveness at the research stage can help ensure that scarce resources such as tissue samples or limited subject popula- tions are employed where they do the most good; can support parallel efforts by providers and insurers to promote cost-effectiveness; and can ensure that research has social value and benefits subjects. I discuss and rebut potential objections to the consideration of cost-effectiveness in research, including the difficulty of predicting effectiveness and cost at the research stage, concerns about limitations in cost-effectiveness analysis, and worries about overly limiting researchers’ freedom. I then consider the advantages and disadvantages of having certain participants in the research enterprise, including IRBs, advisory committees, sponsors, investigators, and subjects, consider cost-effectiveness. The project concludes by qualifiedly endorsing the consideration of cost-effectiveness at the research stage. While incorporating cost-effectiveness considerations into the ethical evaluation of human subjects research will not on its own ensure that the health care system realizes cost-effectiveness goals, doing so nonetheless represents an important part of a broader effort to control rising medical costs

    The role of the locus coeruleus in mediating the attentional blink: A neurocomputational theory.

    The attentional blink refers to the transient impairment in perceiving the 2nd of 2 targets presented in close temporal proximity. In this article, the authors propose a neurobiological mechanism for this effect. The authors extend a recently developed computational model of the potentiating influence of the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system on information processing and hypothesize that a refractoriness in the function of this system may account for the attentional blink. The model accurately simulates the time course of the attentional blink, including Lag 1 sparing. The theory also offers an account of the close relationship of the attentional blink to the electrophysiological P3 component. The authors report results from two behavioral experiments that support a critical prediction of their theory regarding the time course of Lag 1 sparing. Finally, the relationship between the authors' neurocomputational theory and existing cognitive theories of the attentional blink is discussed.     The Canada-France deep fields survey-I: 100,000 galaxies, 1 deg^2: a precise measurement of \omega(\theta) to IAB~25

    (abridged) Using the UH8K mosaic camera, we have measured the angular correlation function \omega(\theta) for 100,000 galaxies over four widely separated fields totalling ~1\deg^2 and reaching IAB~25.5. With this sample we investigate the dependence of \omega(\theta) at 1', A_\omega(1'), on sample median IAB magnitude in the range 19.5<I(AB-med)<24. Our results show that A_\omega(1') decreases monotonically to IAB~25. At bright magnitudes, \omega(\theta) is consistent with a power-law of slope \delta = -0.8 for 0.2'<\theta<3.0' but at fainter magnitudes we find \delta ~ -0.6. At the 3\sigma level, our observations are still consistent with \delta=-0.8. Furthermore, in the magnitude ranges 18.5<IAB<24.0 and 18.5<IAB<23.0 we find galaxies with 2.6<(V-I)AB<2.9 have A_\omega(1')'s which are ~10x higher than field values. We demonstrate that our model redshift distributions for the faint galaxy population are in good agreement with current spectroscopic observations. Using these predictions, we find that for low-omega cosmologies and assuming r_0=4.3/h Mpc, in the range 19.5<I(AB-med)<22, the growth of galaxy clustering is \epsilon~0. However, at 22<I(AB-med)<24.0, our observations are consistent with \epsilon>1. Models with \epsilon~0 cannot simultaneously match both bright and faint measurements of A_\omega(1`). We show how this result is a natural consequence of the ``bias-free'' nature of the \epsilon formalism and is consistent with the field galaxy population in the range 22.0<IAB<24.0 being dominated by galaxies of low intrinsic luminosity.Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, requires natbib.sty, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    The mass-loss return from evolved stars to the Large Magellanic Cloud V. The GRAMS carbon-star model grid

    The total dust return rate from AGB and RSG star outflows is an important constraint to galactic chemical evolution models. However, this requires detailed radiative transfer (RT) modeling of individual stars, which becomes impractical for large data sets. Another approach is to select the best-fit spectral energy distribution (SED) from a grid of dust shell models, allowing for a faster determination of the luminosities and mass-loss rates for entire samples. We have developed the Grid of RSG and AGB ModelS (GRAMS) to measure the mass-loss return from evolved stars. The models span the range of stellar, dust shell and grain properties relevant to evolved stars. In this paper we present the carbon-star grid and compare our results with data of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) carbon stars from the SAGE and SAGE-Spec programs. We generate spherically symmetric dust shell models using the 2Dust code, with hydrostatic models for the central stars. We explore five values of the inner radius R_in of the dust shell (1.5, 3, 4.5, 7 and 12 R_star). We use amorphous carbon dust mixed with 10% silicon carbide by mass. The grain sizes follows a KMH distribution. The models span 26 values of 11.3 um optical depth, ranging from 0.001 to 4. For each model, 2Dust calculates the output SED from 0.2 to 200 um. Over 12,000 models have dust temperatures below 1800 K. The GRAMS synthetic photometry is in good agreement with SAGE photometry for LMC carbon-rich and extreme AGB star candidates, as well as spectroscopically confirmed carbon stars from the SAGE-Spec study. Our models reproduce the IRAC colors of most of the extreme AGB star candidates, consistent with the expectation that a majority of these enshrouded stars have carbon-rich dust. Finally, we fit the SEDs of some well-studied carbon stars and compare the resulting luminosities and mass-loss rates with those from previous studies.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    On the reliability of mass-loss-rate estimates for AGB stars

    In the recent literature there has been some doubt as to the reliability of CO multi-transitional line observations as a mass-loss-rate estimator for AGB stars. Mass-loss rates for 10 intermediate- to high-mass-loss-rate AGB stars are derived using a detailed non-LTE, non-local radiative transfer code based on the Monte-Carlo method to model the CO radio line intensities. The circumstellar envelopes are assumed to be spherically symmetric and formed by constant mass-loss rates. The energy balance is solved self-consistently and the effects of dust on the radiation field and thermal balance are included. An independent estimate of the mass-loss rate is also obtained from the combination of dust radiative transfer modelling with a dynamical model of the gas and dust particles. We find that the CO radio line intensities and shapes are successfully reproduced for the majority of our objects assuming a constant mass-loss rate. Moreover, the CO line intensities are only weakly dependent on the adopted micro-turbulent velocity, in contrast to recent claims in the literature. The two methods used in the present work to derive mass-loss-rates are consistent within a factor of ~3 for intermediate- to high-mass-loss-rate objects, indicating that this is a lower limit to the uncertainty in present mass-loss-rate estimates. We find a tentative trend with chemistry. Mass-loss rates from the dust/dynamical model are systematically higher than those from the CO model for the carbon stars and vice versa for the M-type stars. This could be ascribed to a discrepancy in the adopted CO/H_2-abundance ratio, but we caution that the sample is small and systematic errors cannot be excluded.Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Why Global Inequality Matters: Derivative Global Egalitarianism

    This article integrates empirical and normative discussions about why global economic inequalities matter in critically examining an approach known as derivative global egalitarianism (DGE). DGE is a burgeoning perspective that opposes excessive global economic inequality not based on the intrinsic value of equality but inequality\u27s negative repercussions on other values. The article aims to advance the research agenda by identifying and critically evaluating four primary varieties of DGE arguments from related but distinct literatures, which span a number of disciplines, including economics, international relations, and political philosophy. Overall, DGE offers a number of persuasive arguments as to why current levels of global inequality are of concern, but aspects of DGE beg further philosophical and empirical examination. By situating DGE within the wider theoretical and empirical contexts, this article provides resources for its critical assessment and theoretical development
