Non-Markovian dynamics for an open two-level system without rotating wave approximation: Indivisibility versus backflow of information
By use of the two measures presented recently, the indivisibility and the
backflow of information, we study the non-Markovianity of the dynamics for a
two-level system interacting with a zero-temperature structured environment
without using rotating wave approximation (RWA). In the limit of weak coupling
between the system and the reservoir, and by expanding the time-convolutionless
(TCL) generator to the forth order with respect to the coupling strength, the
time-local non-Markovian master equation for the reduced state of the system is
derived. Under the secular approximation, the exact analytic solution is
obtained and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the indivisibility and
the backflow of information for the system dynamics are presented. In the more
general case, we investigate numerically the properties of the two measures for
the case of Lorentzian reservoir. Our results show the importance of the
counter-rotating terms to the short-time-scale non-Markovian behavior of the
system dynamics, further expose the relations between the two measures and
their rationality as non-Markovian measures. Finally, the complete positivity
of the dynamics of the considered system is discussed

PURPOSE: Anemia is associated with poor tumor control. It was previously observed that accelerated radiotherapy combined with carbogen breathing and nicotinamide (ARCON) can correct this adverse outcome in patients with head and neck cancer. The purpose of this study was to validate this observation based on data from a randomized trial. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Of 345 patients with cT2-4 laryngeal cancer, 174 were randomly assigned to accelerated radiotherapy and 171 to ARCON. Hemoglobin levels, measured before treatment, were defined as low when <7.5 mmol/L for women and <8.5 mmol/L for men. The hypoxia marker pimonidazole was used to assess the oxygenation status in tumor biopsies. Data were analyzed 2 years after inclusion of the last patient. RESULTS: Pretreatment hemoglobin levels were available and below normal in 27 of 173 (16%) accelerated radiotherapy and 27 of 167 (16%) ARCON patients. In patients with normal pretreatment, hemoglobin levels treatment with ARCON had no significant effect on 5-year loco-regional control (LRC, 79% versus 75%; P = 0.44) and disease-free survival (DFS, 75% vs. 70%; P = 0.46) compared with accelerated radiotherapy. However, in patients with low pretreatment, hemoglobin levels ARCON significantly improved 5-year LRC (79% vs. 53%; P = 0.03) and DFS (68% vs. 45%; P = 0.04). In multivariate analysis including other prognostic factors, pretreatment hemoglobin remained prognostic for LRC and DFS in the accelerated radiotherapy treatment arm. No correlation between pretreatment hemoglobin levels and pimonidazole uptake was observed. CONCLUSION: Results from the randomized phase III trial support previous observations that ARCON has the potential to correct the poor outcome of cancer patients with anemia (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00147732). Thermodynamics of Dipolar Chain Systems
The thermodynamics of a quantum system of layers containing perpendicularly
oriented dipolar molecules is studied within an oscillator approximation for
both bosonic and fermionic species. The system is assumed to be built from
chains with one molecule in each layer. We consider the effects of the
intralayer repulsion and quantum statistical requirements in systems with more
than one chain. Specifically, we consider the case of two chains and solve the
problem analytically within the harmonic Hamiltonian approach which is accurate
for large dipole moments. The case of three chains is calculated numerically.
Our findings indicate that thermodynamic observables, such as the heat
capacity, can be used to probe the signatures of the intralayer interaction
between chains. This should be relevant for near future experiments on polar

A theory of Plasma Membrane Calcium Pump stimulation and activity
The ATP-driven Plasma Membrane Calcium pump or Ca(2+)-ATPase (PMCA) is
characterized by a high affinity to calcium and a low transport rate compared
to other transmembrane calcium transport proteins. It plays a crucial role for
calcium extrusion from cells. Calmodulin is an intracellular calcium buffering
protein which is capable in its Ca(2+) liganded form of stimulating the PMCA by
increasing both the affinity to calcium and the maximum calcium transport rate.
We introduce a new model of this stimulation process and derive analytical
expressions for experimental observables in order to determine the model
parameters on the basis of specific experiments. We furthermore develop a model
for the pumping activity. The pumping description resolves the seeming
contradiction of the Ca(2+):ATP stoichiometry of 1:1 during a translocation
step and the observation that the pump binds two calcium ions at the
intracellular site. The combination of the calcium pumping and the stimulation
model correctly describes PMCA function. We find that the processes of
calmodulin-calcium complex attachment to the pump and of stimulation have to be
separated. Other PMCA properties are discussed in the framework of the model.
The presented model can serve as a tool for calcium dynamics simulations and
provides the possibility to characterize different pump isoforms by different

Safe and efficient in vivo hematopoietic stem cell transduction in nonhuman primates using HDAd5/35++ vectors
We tested a new in vivo hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transduction/selection approach in rhesus macaques using HSC-tropic, integrating, helper-dependent adenovirus vectors (HDAd5/35++) designed for expression of human γ−globin in red blood cells (RBCs) to treat hemoglobinopathies. We show that HDAd5/35++ vectors preferentially transduce HSCs in vivo after intravenous injection into G-CSF/AMD3100-mobilized animals, and that transduced cells return to the bone marrow and spleen. The approach was well tolerated and activation of proinflammatory cytokines that is usually associated with intravenous adenovirus vector injection, was successfully blunted by pre-treatment with dexamethasone in combination with IL-1 and IL-6 receptor blockers. Using our MGMT(P140K)-based in vivo selection approach, γ-globin(+) RBCs increased in all animals with levels up to 90%. After selection, the percentage of γ-globin(+) RBCs declined most likely due to an immune response against human transgene products. Our biodistribution data indicate that γ-globin(+) RBCs in the periphery were mostly derived from mobilized HSCs that homed to the spleen. Integration site analysis revealed a polyclonal pattern and no genotoxicity related to transgene integrations. This is the first proof-of-concept study in nonhuman primates that in vivo HSC gene therapy could be feasible in humans without the need for high-dose chemotherapy conditioning and HSC transplantation
Production of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb and Cs atoms
We report the simultaneous production of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of
Rb and Cs atoms in separate optical traps. The two samples are
mixed during laser cooling and loading but are separated by m for the
final stage of evaporative cooling. This is done to avoid considerable
interspecies three-body recombination, which causes heating and evaporative
loss. We characterize the BEC production process, discuss limitations, and
outline the use of the dual-species BEC in future experiments to produce
rovibronic ground state molecules, including a scheme facilitated by the
superfluid-to-Mott-insulator (SF-MI) phase transition

Mapping geographical inequalities in childhood diarrhoeal morbidity and mortality in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000–17 : analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
Background
Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood diarrhoea.
Methods
We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, to estimate posterior distributions of diarrhoea prevalence, incidence, and mortality from 2000 to 2017. From these data, we estimated the burden of diarrhoea at varying subnational levels (termed units) by spatially aggregating draws, and we investigated the drivers of subnational patterns by creating aggregated risk factor estimates.
Findings
The greatest declines in diarrhoeal mortality were seen in south and southeast Asia and South America, where 54·0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 38·1–65·8), 17·4% (7·7–28·4), and 59·5% (34·2–86·9) of units, respectively, recorded decreases in deaths from diarrhoea greater than 10%. Although children in much of Africa remain at high risk of death due to diarrhoea, regions with the most deaths were outside Africa, with the highest mortality units located in Pakistan. Indonesia showed the greatest within-country geographical inequality; some regions had mortality rates nearly four times the average country rate. Reductions in mortality were correlated to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or reductions in child growth failure (CGF). Similarly, most high-risk areas had poor WASH, high CGF, or low oral rehydration therapy coverage.
Interpretation
By co-analysing geospatial trends in diarrhoeal burden and its key risk factors, we could assess candidate drivers of subnational death reduction. Further, by doing a counterfactual analysis of the remaining disease burden using key risk factors, we identified potential intervention strategies for vulnerable populations. In view of the demands for limited resources in LMICs, accurately quantifying the burden of diarrhoea and its drivers is important for precision public health
Anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2018
Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results demonstrate widespread moderate improvements in overall anemia prevalence but identify only three LMICs with a high probability of achieving the WHO GNT by 2030 at a national scale, and no LMIC is expected to achieve the target in all their subnational administrative units. Our maps show where large within-country disparities occur, as well as areas likely to fall short of the WHO GNT, offering precision public health tools so that adequate resource allocation and subsequent interventions can be targeted to the most vulnerable populations.Peer reviewe
