    From raw measurements to human pose - a dataset with low-cost and high-end inertial-magnetic sensor data

    This database is accompanied by a folder with all the scripts used to process and handle the data described. It is openly hosted in Zenodo: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5801927Additionally, an extended code repository is available on Github (https://github.com/ManuelPalermo/HumanInertialPose.git) with updated code to not only process the data described, but also calculate kinematics, visualize and evaluate the resulting motions and offers extended support for general inertial pose estimation pipelines. All scripts are based on the Python programming language and, thus, open source. The code contains a permissive MIT license for unrestricted usage.Wearable technology is expanding for motion monitoring. However, open challenges still limit its widespread use, especially in low-cost systems. Most solutions are either expensive commercial products or lower performance ad-hoc systems. Moreover, few datasets are available for the development of complete and general solutions. This work presents 2 datasets, with low-cost and high-end Magnetic, Angular Rate, and Gravity(MARG) sensor data. Provides data for the complete inertial pose pipeline analysis, starting from raw data, sensor-to-segment calibration, multi-sensor fusion, skeleton-kinematics, to complete Human pose. Contains data from 21 and 10 participants, respectively, performing 6 types of sequences, presenting high variability and complex dynamics with almost complete range-of-motion. Amounts to 3.5 M samples, synchronized with a ground-truth inertial motion capture system. Presents a method to evaluate data quality. This database may contribute to develop novel algorithms for each pipeline's processing steps, with applications in inertial pose estimation algorithms, human movement forecasting, and motion assessment in industrial or rehabilitation settings.     Establishment of a new PNA-FISH method for Aspergillus fumigatus identification: first insights for future use in pulmonary samples

    Aspergillus fumigatus is the main causative agent of Invasive Aspergillosis. This mold produces conidia that when inhaled by immunocompromized hosts can be deposited in the lungs and germinate, triggering disease. In this paper, the development of a method using peptide nucleic acid-fluorescence in situ hybridization (PNA-FISH) is described. The PNA-FISH probe was tested in several strains and a specificity and sensitivity of 100% was obtained. Detection of A. fumigatussensu stricto was then achieved in artificial sputum medium (ASM) pre-inoculated with 1 × 102 conidia·mL−1–1 × 103 conidia·mL−1, after a germination step of 24 h. The PNA-FISH method was evaluated in 24 clinical samples (10 sputum, 8 bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and 6 bronchial lavage (BL)) that were inoculated with 1 × 104 conidia·mL−1 in sputum; 1 × 103 conidia·mL−1 in BL and BAL, for 24 h. Despite a specificity of 100%, the sensitivity was 79%. This relatively low sensitivity can be explained by the fact that hyphae can yield “fungal ball“ clusters, hindering pipetting procedures and subsequent detection, leading to false negative results.     Effect of whey protein purity and glycerol content upon physical properties of edible films manufactured therefrom

    This manuscript describes the detailed characterization of edible films made from two different protein products e whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein concentrate (WPC), added with three levels of glycerol (Gly) e i.e. 40, 50 and 60%(w/w). The molecular structure, as well as barrier, tensile, thermal,surface and optical properties of said films were determined, in attempts to provide a better understanding of the effects of proteinaceous purity and Gly content of the feedstock. WPI films exhibited statistically lower (p < 0.05) moisture content (MC), film solubility (S), water activity, water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen and carbon dioxide permeabilities (O2P and CO2P, respectively) and color change values, as well as statistically higher (p < 0.05) density, surface hydrophobicity, mechanical resistance, elasticity, extensibility and transparency values than their WPC counterparts, for the same content of Gly. These results are consistent with data from thermal and FTIR analyses. Furthermore,a significant increase (p < 0.05) was observed in MC, S, WVP, O2P, CO2P, weight loss and extensibility of both protein films when the Gly content increased; whereas a significant decrease (p < 0.05) was observed in thermal features, as well as in mechanical resistance and elasticity e thus leading to weaker films.     Tau mislocation in glucocorticoid-triggered hippocampal pathology

    The exposure to high glucocorticoids (GC) triggers neuronal atrophy and cognitive deficits, but the exact cellular mechanisms underlying the GC-associated dendritic remodeling and spine loss are still poorly understood. Previous studies have implicated sustained GC elevations in neurodegenerative mechanisms through GC-evoked hyperphosphorylation of the cytoskeletal protein Tau while Tau mislocation has recently been proposed as relevant in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. In light of the dual cytoplasmic and synaptic role of Tau, this study monitored the impact of prolonged GC treatment on Tau intracellular localization and its phosphorylation status in different cellular compartments. We demonstrate, both by biochemical and ultrastructural analysis, that GC administration led to cytosolic and dendritic Tau accumulation in rat hippocampus, and triggered Tau hyperphosphorylation in epitopes related to its malfunction (Ser396/404) and cytoskeletal pathology (e.g., Thr231 and Ser262). In addition, we show, for the first time, that chronic GC administration also increased Tau levels in synaptic compartment; however, at the synapse, there was an increase in phosphorylation of Ser396/404, but a decrease of Thr231. These GC-triggered Tau changes were paralleled by reduced levels of synaptic scaffolding proteins such as PSD-95 and Shank proteins as well as reduced dendritic branching and spine loss. These in vivo findings add to our limited knowledge about the underlying mechanisms of GC-evoked synaptic atrophy and neuronal disconnection implicating Tau missorting in mechanism(s) of synaptic damage, beyond AD pathology.We would like to thank Rui Fernandes for TEM technical support.     Role of counter-ion and helper lipid content in the design and properties of nanocarrier systems: a biophysical study in 2D and 3D lipid assemblies

    There is a direct correlation between the physicochemical properties of nanocarrier systems and their biological performance, including stability under physiological conditions, cellular internalization and transfection efficiency. Therefore, understanding the biophysical aspects that affect self-assembled nanocarriers is determinant for a rational design of efficient formulations. In this study, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of each component on the molecular organization of aggregates formed by the cationic lipids dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide and chloride (DODAB and DODAC) and the neutral lipid monoolein (MO) was made. Specifically, the effects of the helper lipid content (MO) and the role of the counter-ion of the cationic lipids were evaluated in 2D and 3D assemblies by Langmuir surface pressure–molecular area (π–A) isotherms, Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), confocal Raman microscopy, and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). The results show that MO has a different distribution on the DODAC and DODAB bilayers, and a fluidizing effect dependent on the MO content. For low MO molar ratios, the fluidizing effect was more pronounced in DODAC : MO mixtures, indicating a more homogeneous distribution of MO in DODAC than in DODAB bilayers. For high MO molar ratios, packing of membranes was similar for both cationic lipids, and the effect of the counter-ion is attenuated. The distribution of MO in the two cationic systems is closely related with the efficiency of the counter-ions in the screening of the charged group.We acknowledge DAAD/FCT that provided the financial support required to gather the Portuguese and the German coworkers.     Standalone vertex ïŹnding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ Îł, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lÎœlÎœ. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined ïŹts probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson

    Measurement of the top quark pair cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using final states with an electron or a muon and a hadronically decaying τ lepton

    A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb -1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a τ lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, σtt-=186±13(stat.)±20(syst.)±7(lumi.) pb, is in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction
