    Equity in care and support provision for people affected by dementia: experiences of people from UK South Asian and White British backgrounds

    OBJECTIVES: To explore the care and support received and wanted by United Kingdom (UK) South Asian and White British people affected by dementia and whether access to it is equitable. DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews using a topic guide. SETTING: Eight memory clinics across four UK National Health Service Trusts; three in London and one in Leicester. PARTICIPANTS: We purposefully recruited a maximum variation sample of people living with dementia from South Asian or White British backgrounds, their family carers, and memory clinic clinicians. We interviewed 62 participants including 13 people living with dementia, 24 family carers, and 25 clinicians. MEASUREMENTS: We audio-recorded interviews, transcribed them, and analyzed them using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: People from either background were willing to accept needed care and wanted competence and communication from carers. South Asian people frequently discussed needing care from someone with a shared language, but language differences could also be an issue for White British people. Some clinicians thought South Asian people had a stronger preference to provide care within the family. We found that preferences for who provides care varied across families regardless of ethnicity. Those with more financial resources and English language have more options for care that meets their needs. CONCLUSIONS: People of the same background make differing choices about care. Equitable access to care is impacted by people’s personal resources, and people from South Asian backgrounds may experience the double disadvantage of having fewer options for care that meets their needs and fewer resources to seek care elsewhere

    Structure and Properties of Traces for Functional Programs

    The tracer Hat records in a detailed trace the computation of a program written in the lazy functional language Haskell. The trace can then be viewed in various ways to support program comprehension and debugging. The trace was named the augmented redex trail. Its structure was inspired by standard graph rewriting implementations of functional languages. Here we describe a model of the trace that captures its essential properties and allows formal reasoning. The trace is a graph constructed by graph rewriting but goes beyond simple term graphs. Although the trace is a graph whose structure is independent of any rewriting strategy, we define the trace inductively, thus giving us a powerful method for proving its properties

    Lightweight Computation Tree Tracing for Lazy Functional Languages

    A computation tree of a program execution describes computations of functions and their dependencies. A computation tree describes how a program works and is at the heart of algorithmic debugging. To generate a computation tree, existing algorithmic debuggers either use a complex implementation or yield a less informative approximation. We present a method for lazy functional languages that requires only a simple tracing library to generate a detailed computation tree. With our algorithmic debugger a programmer can debug any Haskell program by only importing our library and annotating suspected functions

    Challenges of assessing community mortality due to respiratory viruses in children aged less than 5 years

    Background: Estimating the real impact of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease is key for the development of vaccines and treatments. Ascertaining the burden of community mortality due to RSV is challenging due to the lack of primary data. Therefore, conducting observational studies to determine the factors associated with community mortality due to the virus in developing countries is important.Objective: Our aim in this study was to describe the obstacles, gaps, and challenges that investigators face in low-income, vulnerable regions in 4 developing countries on 3 continents.Results: The main obstacles and challenges of ascertaining community mortality due to RSV were defining strategies to consent families for testing before burial, sampling individuals at the household level, supporting bereaved parents with different cultural and religious backgrounds, establishing tailored strategies for studies in challenging settings, and integrating RSV mortality data from nasopharyngeal samples.Conclusion: Detailed logistical planning based on population sociodemographic information, grief counseling, staff training, and a multidisciplinary approach with adequate laboratory infrastructure is critical to successful observational community-based RSV studies

    An actionable anti-racism plan for geoscience organizations.

    Geoscience organizations shape the discipline. They influence attitudes and expectations, set standards, and provide benefits to their members. Today, racism and discrimination limit the participation of, and promote hostility towards, members of minoritized groups within these critical geoscience spaces. This is particularly harmful for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color in geoscience and is further exacerbated along other axes of marginalization, including disability status and gender identity. Here we present a twenty-point anti-racism plan that organizations can implement to build an inclusive, equitable and accessible geoscience community. Enacting it will combat racism, discrimination, and the harassment of all members

The definitive version was published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems 19 (2018): 2463-2477, doi:10.1029/2017GC007339.We examine the paleoceanographic record over the last ∼400 kyr derived from major, trace, and rare earth elements in bulk sediment from two sites in the East China Sea drilled during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 346. We use multivariate statistical partitioning techniques (Q‐mode factor analysis, multiple linear regression) to identify and quantify five crustal source components (Upper Continental Crust (UCC), Luochuan Loess, Xiashu Loess, Southern Japanese Islands, Kyushu Volcanics), and model their mass accumulation rates (MARs). UCC (35–79% of terrigenous contribution) and Luochuan Loess (16–55% contribution) are the most abundant end‐members through time, while Xiashu Loess, Southern Japanese Islands, and Kyushu Volcanics (1–22% contribution) are the lowest in abundance when present. Cycles in UCC and Luochuan Loess MARs may indicate continental and loess‐like material transported by major rivers into the Okinawa Trough. Increases in sea level and grain size proxy (e.g., SiO2/Al2O3) are coincident with increased flux of Southern Japanese Islands, indicating localized sediment supply from Japan. Increases in total terrigenous MAR precede minimum relative sea levels by several thousand years and may indicate remobilization of continental shelf material. Changes in the relative contribution of these end‐members are decoupled from total MAR, indicating compositional changes in the sediment are distinct from accumulation rate changes but may be linked to variations in sea level, riverine and eolian fluxes, and shelf‐bypass processes over glacial‐interglacials, complicating accurate monsoon reconstructions from fluvial dominated sediment.U.S. National Science Foundation Grant Numbers: NSF‐EAR1434175, NSF‐EAR1433665, NSF‐EAR143413

    Effects of increasing replacement of dietary fishmeal with plant protein sources on growth performance and body lipid composition of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)

    The effects of high levels of replacement of dietary fish meal (FM) by mixtures of plant protein (PP) sources on growth performance, lipid composition, protein and lipid digestibility and fatty acid profile were investigated in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. Experimental diets containing 35% protein and 28% lipid were formulated with a low level of FM that was replaced by increasing levels of PP resulting in four diets of 25/45 ((% FM/% PP, F25), 18/50 (F18) 11/55 (F11) and 5/60 (F5). Dietary oil was supplied by a fish oil (FO) and rapeseed oil blend at a ratio of ~40/60 so this formulation was effectively a dual replacement of FO and FM. Diets were supplemented with crystalline amino acids, to compensate for the reduction in indispensible amino acids due to reduced FM content, and all diets were supplemented with lecithin. Salmon, initial weight 1.30 Âą 0.1 kg, were fed one of the four experimental diets for 19 weeks. Feed consumption decreased as PP inclusion in diets increased, probably as a result of reduced palatability. Fish fed the F18, F11 and F5 diets had significantly lower final body weights than fish fed the F25 diet, with SGR decreased by 5 %, 11 % and 23 %, respectively. The lower growth as FM inclusion in diets decreased was associated with decreased feed intake throughout the trial. In contrast, nutrient utilization was significantly affected in the first phase with increased FCR and decreased PER as FM inclusion decreased. However, there were no significant differences in these parameters in the second phase suggesting that there was metabolic adaptation to the diets. Changes in feed physical texture and/or chemical olfactory attractants possibly reduced the palatability of the diets. Essential fatty acid composition, in particular EPA, DHA and ARA in salmon flesh and liver were not negatively affected by dietary treatment and there was some evidence of increased retention and/or synthesis of LC-PUFA

    Precise measurement of the W-boson mass with the CDF II detector

    We have measured the W-boson mass MW using data corresponding to 2.2/fb of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting of 470126 W->enu candidates and 624708 W->munu candidates yield the measurement MW = 80387 +- 12 (stat) +- 15 (syst) = 80387 +- 19 MeV. This is the most precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the precision of all previous measurements combined

    Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined. For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4, while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than 90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV.
