Electrical resistivity at large temperatures: Saturation and lack thereof
Many transition metal compounds show saturation of the resistivity at high
temperatures, T, while the alkali-doped fullerenes and the high-Tc cuprates are
usually considered to show no saturation. We present a model of transition
metal compounds, showing saturation, and a model of alkali-doped fullerenes,
showing no saturation. To analyze the results we use the f-sum rule, which
leads to an approximate upper limit for the resistivity at large T. For some
systems and at low T, the resistivity increases so rapidly that this upper
limit is approached for experimental T. The resistivity then saturates. For a
model of transition metal compounds with weakly interacting electrons, the
upper limit corresponds to a mean free path consistent with the Ioffe-Regel
condition. For a model of the high Tc cuprates with strongly interacting
electrons, however, the upper limit is much larger than the Ioffe-Regel
condition suggests. Since this limit is not exceeded by experimental data, the
data are consistent with saturation also for the cuprates. After "saturation"
the resistivity usually grows slowly. For the alkali-doped fullerenes,
"saturation" can be considered to have happened already for T=0, due to
orientational disorder. For these systems, however, the resistivity grows so
rapidly after "saturation" that this concept is meaningless. This is due to the
small band width and to the coupling to the level energies of the important
phonons.Comment: 22 pages, RevTeX, 19 eps figures, additional material available at

Superpotentials for M-theory on a G_2 holonomy manifold and Triality symmetry
For -theory on the holonomy manifold given by the cone on {\bf
S^3}\x {\bf S^3} we consider the superpotential generated by membrane
instantons and study its transformations properties, especially under monodromy
transformations and triality symmetry. We find that the latter symmetry is,
essentially, even a symmetry of the superpotential. As in Seiberg/Witten
theory, where a flat bundle given by the periods of an universal elliptic curve
over the -plane occurs, here a flat bundle related to the Heisenberg group
appears and the relevant universal object over the moduli space is related to
hyperbolic geometry.Comment: 58 pages, latex; references adde
The role of posterior fossa decompression in acute cerebellitis.
BACKGROUND: We present two cases of children who were diagnosed with cerebellitis with acute cerebellar swelling. This rare pathology is potentially fatal, and no clear treatment guidelines are described in the literature. DISCUSSION: Considering our experience, we discuss the different therapeutic strategies and propose aggressive surgical measures consisting of external ventricular drainage and posterior fossa decompression in case of failure of early response to medical treatment to limit secondary cerebellar and brainstem lesions
Photoproduction of mesons off nuclei
Recent results for the photoproduction of mesons off nuclei are reviewed.
These experiments have been performed for two major lines of research related
to the properties of the strong interaction. The investigation of nucleon
resonances requires light nuclei as targets for the extraction of the isospin
composition of the electromagnetic excitations. This is done with quasi-free
meson photoproduction off the bound neutron and supplemented with the
measurement of coherent photoproduction reactions, serving as spin and/or
isospin filters. Furthermore, photoproduction from light and heavy nuclei is a
very efficient tool for the study of the interactions of mesons with nuclear
matter and the in-medium properties of hadrons. Experiments are currently
rapidly developing due to the combination of high quality tagged (and
polarized) photon beams with state-of-the-art 4pi detectors and polarized
targets
QCD Corrections to Spin Dependent Drell-Yan and a Global Subtraction Scheme
We present QCD corrections to the Drell-Yan process in the transversely
polarized, longitudinally polarized and unpolarized cases. The analytical
results are presented in a form valid for all -dimensional regularization
schemes. A universal mass factorization scheme is presented in which the
results reduce to those of dimensional reduction. The connection between the
parton distributions and fragmentation functions of dimensional reduction and
those of dimensional regularization is elucidated in a simple manner. Numerical
results are presented for proton-proton collisions at energies relevant to RHIC
(Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider). The perturbative stability of the transverse
and longitudinal asymmetries is investigated.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures in 1 postscript fil
Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Intercalibration of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at start-up
Calibration of the relative response of the individual channels of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector was accomplished, before installation, with cosmic ray muons and test beams. One fourth of the calorimeter was exposed to a beam of high energy electrons and the relative calibration of the channels, the intercalibration, was found to be reproducible to a precision of about 0.3%. Additionally, data were collected with cosmic rays for the entire ECAL barrel during the commissioning phase. By comparing the intercalibration constants obtained with the electron beam data with those from the cosmic ray data, it is demonstrated that the latter provide an intercalibration precision of 1.5% over most of the barrel ECAL. The best intercalibration precision is expected to come from the analysis of events collected in situ during the LHC operation. Using data collected with both electrons and pion beams, several aspects of the intercalibration procedures based on electrons or neutral pions were investigated
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for W' bosons decaying to an electron and a neutrino with the D0 detector
This Letter describes the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson W'
decaying into an electron and a neutrino. The data were collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider at a
center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity
of about 1 inverse femtobarn. Lacking any significant excess in the data in
comparison with known processes, an upper limit is set on the production cross
section times branching fraction, and a W' boson with mass below 1.00 TeV can
be excluded at the 95% C.L., assuming standard-model-like couplings to
fermions. This result significantly improves upon previous limits, and is the
most stringent to date.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
