    Search for beautiful tetraquarks in the <i>ϒ</i>(1<i>S</i>)ÎŒ<sup>+</sup>ÎŒ<sup>−</sup> invariant-mass spectrum

    International audienceThe ϒ(1S)ÎŒ+^{+}Ό−^{−} invariant-mass distribution is investigated for a possible exotic meson state composed of two b quarks and two b‟ \overline{b} quarks, Xbb‟bb‟ {X}_{b\overline{b}b\overline{b}} . The analysis is based on a data sample of pp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies s=7 \sqrt{s}=7 , 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.3 fb−1^{−1}. No significant excess is found, and upper limits are set on the product of the production cross-section and the branching fraction as functions of the mass of the Xbb‟bb‟ {X}_{b\overline{b}b\overline{b}} state. The limits are set in the fiducial volume where all muons have pseudorapidity in the range [2.0, 5.0], and the Xbb‟bb‟ {X}_{b\overline{b}b\overline{b}} state has rapidity in the range [2.0, 4.5] and transverse momentum less than 15 GeV/c

    Measurement of J/ψ -pair production in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV and study of gluon transverse-momentum dependent PDFs

    The production cross-section of J/ψ pairs in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment. The measurement is performed with both J/ψ mesons in the transverse momentum range 0 &lt; pT&lt; 14 GeV/c and rapidity range 2.0 &lt; y &lt; 4.5. The cross-section of this process is measured to be 16.36 ± 0.28 (stat) ± 0.88 (syst) nb. The contributions from single-parton scattering and double-parton scattering are separated based on the dependence of the cross-section on the absolute rapidity difference ∆y between the two J/ψ mesons. The effective cross-section of double-parton scattering is measured to be σeff = 13.1 ± 1.8 (stat) ± 2.3 (syst) mb. The distribution of the azimuthal angle ϕCS of one of the J/ψ mesons in the Collins-Soper frame and the pT-spectrum of the J/ψ pairs are also measured for the study of the gluon transverse-momentum dependent distributions inside protons. The extracted values of ⟹cos 2ϕCS⟩ and ⟹cos 4ϕCS⟩ are consistent with zero, but the presence of azimuthal asymmetry at a few percent level is allowed

    Observation of J /ψp Resonances Consistent with Pentaquark States in Λb0 →j /ψK-p Decays

    Observations of exotic structures in the J/ψp channel, which we refer to as charmonium-pentaquark states, in Λb0→J/ψK-p decays are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3fb-1 acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude analysis of the three-body final state reproduces the two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the structures seen in the J/ψp mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass of 4380±8±29MeV and a width of 205±18±86MeV, while the second is narrower, with a mass of 4449.8±1.7±2.5MeV and a width of 39±5±19MeV. The preferred JP assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2

    he branching fraction ratio R(D∗)≡B(BÂŻ0→D∗+τ-ÎœÂŻÏ„)/B(BÂŻ0→D∗+ÎŒ-ÎœÂŻÎŒ) is measured using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode τ-→Ό-ÎœÂŻÎŒÎœÏ„. The semitauonic decay is sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles that preferentially couple to the third generation of fermions, in particular, Higgs-like charged scalars. A multidimensional fit to kinematic distributions of the candidate BÂŻ0 decays gives R(D∗)=0.336±0.027(stat)±0.030(syst). This result, which is the first measurement of this quantity at a hadron collider, is 2.1 standard deviations larger than the value expected from lepton universality in the standard model

    Measurement of matter–antimatter differences in beauty baryon decays

    Differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter have been observed in K and B meson decays, but not yet in any baryon decay. Such differences are associated with the non-invariance of fundamental interactions under the combined charge-conjugation and parity transformations, known as CP violation. Here, using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we search for CP-violating asymmetries in the decay angle distributions of Lambda(0)(b) baryons decaying to p pi(-) pi(+) pi(-) and p pi(-) K+K- final states. These four-body hadronic decays are a promising place to search for sources of CP violation both within and beyond the standard model of particle physics. We find evidence for CP violation in Lambda(0)(b) to p pi(-) pi(+) pi(-) decays with a statistical significance corresponding to 3.3 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. This represents the first evidence for CP violation in the baryon sector

    The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region

    Observation of the Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi p pi(-) decay

    The first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi p pi(-) is reported using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). A prominent signal is observed and the branching fraction relative to the decay mode Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi pK(-) is determined to be B(Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi p pi(-))/ B(Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi pK(-)) = 0.0824 +/- 0.0025 (stat) +/- 0.0042 (syst). A search for direct CP violation is performed. The difference in the CP asymmetries between these two decays is found to be ACP(Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi p pi(-))/ A(CP)(Lambda(0)(b) -> J / psi pK(-)) = (+5.7 +/- 2.4 (stat) +/- 1.2 (syst))%, which is compatible with CP symmetry at the 2.2 sigma level
