    Practising-as-inquiry: developing self-as-practitioner

    My first-person inquiry is into my professional practice and my development as a practitioner. It is an inductive inquiry, from which I draw universal conclusions from my unique reflections on my sense-of-self and my experiences of my practice. Through practising-as-inquiry I interpret, discover and make the value, benefits and impact of my practice to me and others, and thereby resource and harvest the ethos, praxis and autopoiesis with which I further develop my capacity to intervene in my own and my clients’ systems. My inquiry considers how I have worked with my data as a bricolage of action research approaches to practising-as-inquiry and their congruence with my philosophy and its actionable knowledge. The form of the bricolage has also been reflected in the practice data I have chosen to present – an inquiry in collaboration with 15 others into our association in common, a heuristic inquiry into relationships in my families of origin and procreation as containers of personal transformation and flourishing, and a facilitated inquiry into my capacity to intervene and scaffold the development of my clients within their own systems. The bricolage is also apparent in the pragmatic use of whatever practices and tools – constellations, conversations, create-and curate processes, ethnodrama, fridge-magnet poetry, iPhone videos, iterative writing, origami fortune-tellers, photographs, reflective practice, relational supervision, self-dialogue, storytelling – were immediately to hand for the improvisation of my experiments in the moment, as well as in the qualitative research methods – autoethnography, grounded theory, reflections-in- and -on-action, self-dialogue, storytelling – that I have used to interpret my experiences and make my world more visible in this inquiry. The pragmatic usefulness of this inquiry is in working towards transformation through practising-as-inquiry and developing self-as-practitioner. It is this self-made quality of practice as the outcome of practising that is my unique, universal contribution

    Using Multibeam Echosounders for Hydrographic Surveying in the Water Column: Estimating Wreck Least Depths

    Wreck superstructure can extend into the water column and pose a danger to navigation if the least depth is not accurately portrayed to mariners. NOAA has several methods available to acquire a wreck least depth: lead line, wire drag, diver investigation, side scan shadow length, single beam bathymetry, and multibeam bathymetry. Previous studies have demonstrated that the bottom detection algorithm can fail to locate a wreck mast that is evident in the water column data. Modern multibeam sonars can record water column data in addition to bottom detections. NOAA’s current Hydrographic Specifications do not require water column collection; the best practice is to collect additional bathymetry data during wreck developments. Several multibeam bathymetry and multibeam water column datasets collected by NOAA vessels are evaluated and the wreck least depth results are compared to previous international field trials. A workflow to extract filtered and sidelobe suppressed water column point clouds is presented using currently available software packages. This paper explores the challenges encountered with water column data collection and processing and finds that analysis of water column data provides an improvement to finding wreck least depths, in some cases

    Circular Dichroism of RbHe and RbN2_2 Molecules

    We present measurements of the circular dichroism of optically pumped Rb vapor near the D1 resonance line. Collisions with the buffer gases 3^3He and N2_2 reduce the transparency of the vapor, even when fully polarized. We use two methods to measure this effect, show that the He results can be understood from RbHe potential curves, and show how this effect conspires with the spectral profile of the optical pumping light to increase the laser power demands for optical pumping of very optically thick samples

    Optical Magnetometer Array for Fetal Magnetocardiography

    We describe an array of spin-exchange relaxation free optical magnetometers designed for detection of fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) signals. The individual magnetometers are configured with a small volume with intense optical pumping, surrounded by a large pump-free region. Spin-polarized atoms that diffuse out of the optical pumping region precess in the ambient magnetic field and are detected by a probe laser. Four such magnetometers, at the corners of a 7 cm square, are configured for gradiometry by feeding back the output of one magnetometer to a field coil to null uniform magnetic field noise at frequencies up to 200 Hz. Using this array, we present the first measurements of fMCG signals using an atomic magnetometer

    The influence of the humanist dialectic and the reform of the scholastic theory of the topics in the Tractatus de locis dialecticis of Alonso of Veracruz

    En el Tractatus de locis dialecticis, Alonso de la Veracruz (1507-1584) promueve una reforma de la teoría de los tópicos que se caracteriza por la combinación de algunos de los elementos más expresivos de tradiciones rivales y aparentemente antagónicas como es el caso de la dialéctica humanista y de la lógica escolástica. Para determinar si tales elementos estarían articulados de manera integrada y coherente en la teoría propuesta por Fray Alonso, evaluamos la compatibilidad entre las definiciones escolástica y agricoliana de tópico, visto que ambas igualmente fueron asimiladas por el Tractatus de locis dialecticis. En el estudio aquí presentado, defendemos que Alonso de la Veracruz concilia tales definiciones, concibiendo los tópicos bajo una perspectiva prioritariamente epistémica. En seguida, averiguamos lo que llevó a Fray Alonso a enaltecer las innovaciones de la dialéctica humanista y, al mismo tiempo, insistir en el uso de las proposiciones máximas, ignorando diversas críticas a ellas dirigidas por Rodolfo Agrícola. Acreditamos que tal dificultad puede ser dilucidada mediante la hipótesis de que Alonso de la Veracruz habría optado por el mantenimiento de las máximas en razón del importante papel por ellas ejercido en la fundamentación de las inferencias entimemáticas. Finalmente, investigamos las razones por las cuales la taxonomía alonsina de los tópicos no es inviabilizada por la presencia de trazos de las teorías escolástica y humanista de los tópicos. En ese contexto, asumimos que la clasificación de los tópicos sustentada por Fray Alonso no es corrompida por su carácter híbrido, una vez que ella compatibilizaría las doctrinas más relevantes de las tradiciones escolástica y humanista.In Tractatus de locis dialecticis, Alonso of Veracruz reforms the theory of topics, which is featured by the combination of some of the most expressive elements from rival and, apparently, antagonistic traditions, such as the case of humanist dialectic and scholastic logic. The compatibility between the scholastic and Agricola’s definitions of topic were evaluated – since both were assimilated by the Tractatus de locis dialecticis – to determine whether such elements were articulated in an integrated and coherent manner in Friar Alonso’s theory. In the current study, we argue that Alonso of Veracruz reconciles these definitions by thinking the topics under an essentially epistemic perspective. Then, we investigate what led Friar Alonso to praise the humanist dialectic innovations and, at the same time, insist on using the maxims, thus ignoring several criticisms directed to them by Rudolph Agricola. We believe that this difficulty may be clarified by the hypothesis that Alonso of Veracruz would have opted for keeping the maxims due to the important role they played in the groundings of the enthymematic inferences. Finally, we investigate the reasons why Alonso’s taxonomy of topics is not frustrated by the presence of traces of the scholastic and humanistic theories of topics. In this context, we assume that the topics classification supported by Friar Alonso is not corrupted by its hybrid character, since it matches the most important doctrines of scholastic and humanist traditions.Fil: Wyllie, Guilherme.     A review of Robert Broom’s therapsid holotypes: have they survived the test of time?

    While still a medical student in Scotland in the late 1880s, Robert Broom had already identified the principal aim of his scientific career as being ‘to solve the problem of the origin of the mammals’. In Australia, between 1892 and 1896, his work on extant and fossil marsupials and monotremes established that, contrary to the then prevailing scientific opinion which supported a polyphyletic origin for mammals from a diverse range of amphibians and reptiles, the most important living class had been monophyletically derived, most likely from a lineage of Karoo therapsid reptiles. Later, on a trip to the United States in 1909/10 he revived the theory which proposed the existence of a close relationship between the South African therapsids and the Permian ‘pelycosaur’ reptiles of North America. The third, and most extensive element of Broom’s task was carried out almost exclusively in South Africa over a period spanning more than half a century during which he created 369 therapsid holotypes, 168 of which were allocated to new genera. This paper establishes that of those holotypes, approximately 57% currently remain valid according to the parameters defined herein. While such a figure may initially seem to support Broom’s reputation as an ‘arch splitter’, it may equally be reflective of the fragmentary state of therapsid systematics at the time when Broom carried out the majority of his research. Today, Broom is most widely-remembered for the celebrated series of fossil hominid discoveries which he made towards the end of his life in the limestone caves of the Transvaal. However, because the task of unravelling the story of the evolution of the mammals was the one which first motivated his interest in science and which formed the single continuous thread running throughout a long and otherwise varied career, it is perhaps still more accurate to view Broom principally as one of the great Karoo (and, in particular, therapsid) palaeontologists
