    Contexto histórico e ações educativas do Centro de Ciências de Araraquara: os 30 anos de um museu universitário do interior paulista

    University Museums are institutions of important social function linked to universities, acting in Teaching, Research and Extension. Research on these institutions and their practices can highlight aspects that further the understanding of their particularities in the museum field. This paper analyzes the consolidation of the Araraquara Science Center (CCA) as a University Museum, emphasizing its educational actions. As a qualitative documentary research, it analyzed the museum’s historical documents, such as institutional decrees, newspaper reports, photographs, reports and scientific productions. These data allowed to trace CCA’s historical path, marked by three major phases that indicate the team’s role and commitment, the expansion of its actions, the museum characterization, and the strategies developed to overcome operational obstacles for maintining its activities.Os museus universitários são instituições vinculadas às universidades, com importante função social, atuando no Ensino, na Pesquisa e na Extensão. Pesquisas sobre esses locais e as práticas que desenvolvem podem evidenciar aspectos que contribuam para o entendimento de suas particularidades no campo museal. Neste artigo, analisaremos o processo de consolidação do Centro de Ciências de Araraquara (CAA) como museu universitário, destacando as suas ações educativas. Partindo dos pressupostos de uma pesquisa qualitativa documental, foram analisados os documentos históricos do museu tais como: decretos institucionais, notícias de jornais, fotografias, relatórios e produções científicas. Os dados possibilitaram traçar o percurso histórico do CCA, que ficou marcado por três grandes fases que indicam o papel e comprometimento da equipe, a ampliação de suas ações, a caracterização museal e as estratégias para superação dos obstáculos operacionais para manutenção de suas atividades e funcionamento

    O trabalho apresenta dados de uma atividade que vem sendo desenvolvida em um Museu de Ciências. Trata-se da Gincana Tecnológica e Investigativa de Química, que utiliza recursos tecnológicos (celulares, notebooks, lousa digital), atividades experimentais, objetos expositivos do Museu, para divulgar e ensinar Química aos visitantes de maneira lúdica, interativa, investigativa e divertida. A Gincana foi desenvolvida com alunos de diferentes níveis de ensino que responderam a um questionário ao final da atividade. Os dados obtidos no questionário foram analisados e são apresentados no texto. Ao participar da Gincana, os visitantes realizam atividades experimentais de modo investigativo, descobrem informações sobre cientistas que contribuíram com o desenvolvimento da Química; relembram e aplicam conceitos estudados na escola; notam a relação entre a Química e as demais áreas do conhecimento, dentre outros. Esses fatores sinalizam as contribuições da Gincana para auxiliar no processo de ensino, aprendizagem e divulgação de conceitos da Química

    Haplotypes of the bovine IgG2 heavy gamma chain in tick-resistant and tick-susceptible breeds of cattle

    Bovines present contrasting, heritable phenotypes of infestations with the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Tick salivary glands produce IgG-binding proteins (IGBPs) as a mechanism for escaping from host antibodies that these ectoparasites ingest during blood meals. Allotypes that occur in the constant region of IgG may differ in their capacity to bind with tick IGBPs; this may be reflected by the distribution of distinct allotypes according to phenotypes of tick infestations. In order to test this hypothesis, we investigated the frequency of haplotypes of bovine IgG2 among tick-resistant and tick-susceptible breeds of bovines. Sequencing of the gene coding for the heavy chain of IgG2 from 114 tick-resistant (Bos taurus indicus, Nelore breed) and tick-susceptible (B. t. taurus, Holstein breed) bovines revealed SNPs that generated 13 different haplotypes, of which 11 were novel and 5 were exclusive of Holstein and 3 of Nelore breeds. Alignment and modeling of coded haplotypes for hinge regions of the bovine IgG2 showed that they differ in the distribution of polar and hydrophobic amino acids and in shape according to the distribution of these amino acids. We also found that there was an association between genotypes of the constant region of the IgG2 heavy chain with phenotypes of tick infestations. These findings open the possibility of investigating if certain IgG allotypes hinder the function of tick IGBPs. If so, they may be markers for breeding for resistance against tick infestations

    Data standardization of plant–pollinator interactions

    Background: Animal pollination is an important ecosystem function and service, ensuring both the integrity of natural systems and human well-being. Although many knowledge shortfalls remain, some high-quality data sets on biological interactions are now available. The development and adoption of standards for biodiversity data and metadata has promoted great advances in biological data sharing and aggregation, supporting large-scale studies and science-based public policies. However, these standards are currently not suitable to fully support interaction data sharing. Results: Here we present a vocabulary of terms and a data model for sharing plant–pollinator interactions data based on the Darwin Core standard. The vocabulary introduces 48 new terms targeting several aspects of plant–pollinator interactions and can be used to capture information from different approaches and scales. Additionally, we provide solutions for data serialization using RDF, XML, and DwC-Archives and recommendations of existing controlled vocabularies for some of the terms. Our contribution supports open access to standardized data on plant–pollinator interactions. Conclusions: The adoption of the vocabulary would facilitate data sharing to support studies ranging from the spatial and temporal distribution of interactions to the taxonomic, phenological, functional, and phylogenetic aspects of plant–pollinator interactions. We expect to fill data and knowledge gaps, thus further enabling scientific research on the ecology and evolution of plant–pollinator communities, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the development of public policies.     Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Search for stop and higgsino production using diphoton Higgs boson decays

    Results are presented of a search for a "natural" supersymmetry scenario with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. It is assumed that only the supersymmetric partners of the top-quark (stop) and the Higgs boson (higgsino) are accessible. Events are examined in which there are two photons forming a Higgs boson candidate, and at least two b-quark jets. In 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded in the CMS experiment, no evidence of a signal is found and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are set, excluding the stop mass below 360 to 410 GeV, depending on the higgsino mass
