Scattering of particles by neutron stars: Time-evolutions for axial perturbations
The excitation of the axial quasi-normal modes of a relativistic star by
scattered particles is studied by evolving the time dependent perturbation
equations. This work is the first step towards the understanding of more
complicated perturbative processes, like the capture or the scattering of
particles by rotating stars. In addition, it may serve as a test for the

Excitation of the odd-parity quasi-normal modes of compact objects
The gravitational radiation generated by a particle in a close unbounded
orbit around a neutron star is computed as a means to study the importance of
the modes of the neutron star. For simplicity, attention is restricted to
odd parity (``axial'') modes which do not couple to the neutron star's fluid
modes. We find that for realistic neutron star models, particles in unbounded
orbits only weakly excite the modes; we conjecture that this is also the
case for astrophysically interesting sources of neutron star perturbations. We
also find that for cases in which there is significant excitation of quadrupole

Teleparallel Energy-Momentum Distribution of Spatially Homogeneous Rotating Spacetimes
The energy-momentum distribution of spatially homogeneous rotating spacetimes
in the context of teleparallel theory of gravity is investigated. For this
purpose, we use the teleparallel version of Moller prescription. It is found
that the components of energy-momentum density are finite and well-defined but
are different from General Relativity. However, the energy-momentum density
components become the same in both theories under certain assumptions. We also
analyse these quantities for some special solutions of the spatially

Radiative falloff of a scalar field in a weakly curved spacetime without symmetries
We consider a massless scalar field propagating in a weakly curved spacetime
whose metric is a solution to the linearized Einstein field equations. The
spacetime is assumed to be stationary and asymptotically flat, but no other
symmetries are imposed -- the spacetime can rotate and deviate strongly from
spherical symmetry. We prove that the late-time behavior of the scalar field is
identical to what it would be in a spherically-symmetric spacetime: it decays
in time according to an inverse power-law, with a power determined by the
angular profile of the initial wave packet (Price falloff theorem). The field's
late-time dynamics is insensitive to the nonspherical aspects of the metric,
and it is governed entirely by the spacetime's total gravitational mass; other
multipole moments, and in particular the spacetime's total angular momentum, do
not enter in the description of the field's late-time behavior. This extended
formulation of Price's falloff theorem appears to be at odds with previous
studies of radiative decay in the spacetime of a Kerr black hole. We show,
however, that the contradiction is only apparent, and that it is largely an
artifact of the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates adopted in these studies.Comment: 17 pages, RevTeX
Microtiming patterns and interactions with musical properties in Samba music
In this study, we focus on the interaction between microtiming patterns and several musical properties: intensity, meter and spectral characteristics. The data-set of 106 musical audio excerpts is processed by means of an auditory model and then divided into several spectral regions and metric levels. The resulting segments are described in terms of their musical properties, over which patterns of peak positions and their intensities are sought. A clustering algorithm is used to systematize the process of pattern detection. The results confirm previously reported anticipations of the third and fourth semiquavers in a beat. We also argue that these patterns of microtiming deviations interact with different profiles of intensities that change according to the metrical structure and spectral characteristics. In particular, we suggest two new findings: (i) a small delay of microtiming positions at the lower end of the spectrum on the first semiquaver of each beat and (ii) systematic forms of accelerando and ritardando at a microtiming level covering two-beat and four-beat phrases. The results demonstrate the importance of multidimensional interactions with timing aspects of music. However, more research is needed in order to find proper representations for rhythm and microtiming aspects in such contexts
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous

Immunoexpression of HOXB7 and HOXB9 in salivary gland tumours
BACKGROUND : Salivary gland carcinomas are uncommon neoplasms and the
identification of new prognostic indicators could improve their management. HOXB7 and HOXB9 are members of the class I homeobox-containing genes important for normal embryogenesis and that are dysregulated in several human neoplasms. This study investigated HOXB7 and HOXB9 expression in salivary gland tumourigenesis, they correlation with neoplastic proliferative and angiogenic features, and their importance as prognostic markers.
METHODS : A hundred and fifty salivary gland tumours were organized in tissue microarray and expression of CD105, Ki67, HOXB7 and HOXB9 were determined through immunohistochemistry. Reactions were quantified and correlated with clinicopathological parameters. RESULTS : In normal glands HOXB7 was found in basal cells, whereas HOXB9 was seen in serous acinar and scattered ductal cells. Malignancies exhibited an increased vascular density, proliferative index, HOXB7 and HOXB9 expression when compared with pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumour. Significant correlation was found between HOXB7 and CD105 (p = 0.004) in adenoid cystic carcinomas, and HOXB7 higher expression significantly correlated with the presence of paresthesia (p = 0.02). No marker exhibited a
significant association with survival rates (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION : HOXB7 and HOXB9 were expressed in normal salivary gland and were present in benign and malignant tumours derived from these structures, and HOXB7 significantly correlated with neoangiogenesis in AdCC. These findings suggest that both proteins might play a role in salivary gland tumourigenesis, but they were not significant prognostic determinants in this sample.Grants from the
