On the Disappearance of the Broad-Line Region in Low-Luminosity Agns
The disk-wind scenario for the broad-line region (BLR) and toroidal
obscuration in active galactic nuclei predicts the disappearance of the BLR at
low luminosities. In accordance with the model predictions, data from a nearly
complete sample of nearby AGNs show that the BLR disappears at luminosities
lower than 5\times\E{39} (M/10^7\Mo)^{2/3} erg s^{-1), where is the
black hole mass. The radiative efficiency of accretion onto the black hole is
\la \E{-3} for these sources, indicating that their accretion is

Plasma free amino acid profiles of Boer goat bucks as influenced by two feeding regimens
The aim of the study was to monitor the physiological changes in plasma free amino acid profiles in Boer goats under nutritional restriction. Fifteen Boer goat bucks were allocated to two experimental groups: CG (control), fed Themeda trianda hay, supplemented with maize, molasses and urea ad libitum; and RG (restricted feeding) fed the same hay (80 and 86% of the daily NRC energy and protein requirements, respectively) for 29 days. Animals were weighed and blood collected weekly for determination of plasma free amino acid profiles and the results compared between experimental groups. At the end of the experimental period the CG animals had higher concentrations of alanine, tyrosine and citrulline amino acids. The RG group had higher concentrations of valine, isoleucine, leucine, threonine, methionine, lysine, taurine, ornithine, hydroxyproline and tri-methyl-histidine, while glycine, serine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, arginine, histidine and proline levels were similar in both groups. From the results it can be concluded that plasma amino acid profiles in the Boer goat were significantly affected by nutritional restriction. The degradation of short carbon chain amino acids is preferred to long carbon chain amino acids for gluconeogenesis in the physiological mechanisms of response to nutritional restriction in Boer goats. CD44v6 high membranous expression is a predictive marker of therapy response in gastric cancer patients

We hypothesized that the extent of CD44v6 membranous tumor expression could predict prognosis and therapy response in GC patients. Two GC surgical cohorts, from Portugal and South Korea (n = 964), were characterized for the extension of CD44v6 membranous immuno-expression, clinicopathological features, patient survival, and therapy response. The value of CD44v6 expression in predicting response to treatment and its impact on prognosis was determined. High CD44v6 expression was associated with invasive features (perineural invasion and depth of invasion) in both cohorts and with worse survival in the Portuguese GC cohort (HR 1.461; 95% confidence interval 1.002-2.131). Patients with high CD44v6 tumor expression benefited from conventional chemotherapy in addition to surgery (p < 0.05), particularly those with heterogeneous CD44v6-positive and -negative populations (CD44v6_3+) (p < 0.007 and p < 0.009). Our study is the first to identify CD44v6 high membranous expression as a potential predictive marker of response to conventional treatment, but it does not clarify CD44v6 prognostic value in GC. Importantly, our data support selection of GC patients with high CD44v6-expressing tumors for conventional chemotherapy in addition to surgery. Variable exponent Triebel-Lizorkin-Morrey spaces
We introduce variable exponent versions of Morreyfied Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. To that end, we prove an important convolution inequality which is a replacement for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal inequality in the fully variable setting. Using it we obtain characterizations by means of Peetre maximal functions and use them to show the independence of the introduced spaces from the admissible system used.publishe
O uso da adenosina deaminase no diagnóstico da tuberculose pericárdica
The objective of this study was to evaluate the adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity usefulness in the diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis (TP), comparing its value with pericardial effusions (PE) caused by other pericardial diseases. A retrospective case-control study was conducted with nine cases of TP and 39 other than TP diseases (12 neoplastic, 11 septic and 16 unknown origin). Every patient included in this study had PE samples submitted to ADA activity measures and microbiological analysis, and then had pericardial tissue samples submitted to microbiological and histopathological examination. Considering the value of 40 U/L as the cut-off for the diagnosis of TP, the specificity and sensitivity were respectively of 72% and 89%. The specificity of ADA activity for the TP was best applied in the differential diagnosis from PE of unknown origin. The present study demonstrates the clinical value of the measurement of ADA activity in PE in the diagnosis of TP.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade da adenosina deaminase (ADA) como auxiliar no diagnóstico da tuberculose pericárdica (TP), comparando o seu valor no derrame pericárdico com outras doenças pericárdicas. Cada paciente incluído no estudo teve sua amostra de tecido pericárdico encaminhada para estudo microbiológico e histopatológico. Considerando o valor de 40 U/L como corte para o diagnóstico de TP, a especificidade e sensibilidade foram respectivamente 72 e 89%. A especificidade da atividade de ADA para a TP foi melhor aplicada no diagnóstico diferencial entre derrame pericárdico de origem indeterminada. Differences between CO- and calcium triplet-derived velocity dispersions in spiral galaxies: evidence for central star formation?
We examine the stellar velocity dispersions (sigma) of a sample of 48
galaxies, 35 of which are spirals, from the Palomar nearby galaxy survey. It is
known that for ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and merger remnants
thesigma derived from the near-infrared CO band-heads is smaller than that
measured from optical lines, while no discrepancy between these measurements is
found for early-type galaxies. No such studies are available for spiral
galaxies - the subject of this paper. We used cross-dispersed spectroscopic
data obtained with the Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS), with spectral
coverage from 0.85 to 2.5um, to obtain sigma measurements from the 2.29 m
CO band-heads (sigma_{CO}), and the 0.85 um calcium triplet (sigma_{CaT}). For
the spiral galaxies in the sample, we found that sigma_{CO} is smaller than
sigma_{CaT}, with a mean fractional difference of 14.3%. The best fit to the
data is given by sigma_{opt} = (46.0+/-18.1) + (0.85+/-0.12)sigma_{CO}. This
"sigma discrepancy" may be related to the presence of warm dust, as suggested
by a slight correlation between the discrepancy and the infrared luminosity.
This is consistent with studies that have found no sigma-discrepancy in
dust-poor early-type galaxies, and a much larger discrepancy in dusty merger
remnants and ULIRGs. That sigma_{CO}$ is lower than sigma_{opt} may also
indicate the presence of a dynamically cold stellar population component. This
would agree with the spatial correspondence between low sigma_{CO} and
young/intermediate-age stellar populations that has been observed in
spatially-resolved spectroscopy of a handful of galaxies.Comment: Published in MNRAS, 446, 282
Inhaled nitric oxide and high concentrations of oxygen in pediatrics patients with congenital cardiopathy and pulmonary hypertension: report of five cases
Five patients with ages ranging from 6 months to 3 years were analyzed. All received inhaled nitric oxide (NO - 20 parts per million (ppm) ) and oxygen (0(2) - at a concentration of 90-95%) by means of an oxygen hood. Mean Pulmonary Artery Pressure (MPAP), Mean Aortic Pressure (MAoP), Pulmonary Vascular Resistance (PVR) and Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR) were measured and the calculation of their relationship to pulmonary/systemic flow (Qp/Qs) was performed by the catheterization' of the femoral artery vein. Three patients presented reduction in PVR and increase in Qp/Qs. There were no systemic alterations or any side effect from using NO.Cinco pacientes com cardiopatia congênita e hipertensão pulmonar receberam o oxido nítrico (NO - 20 partes por milhão (ppm)) inalatório e o oxigênio ( O2) na concentração de 90-95%) ) por meio de uma tenda de oxigênio. Através do cateterismo da artéria e veia femural foram mensuradas as pressão média de artéria pulmonar ( PmAP), pressão média de aorta (PmAo), resistência vascular pulmonar ( RVP), resistência vascular sistêmica (RVS) e feito o cálculo da relação fluxo pulmonar/sistêmico ( Qp/Qs). Três pacientes apresentaram uma redução na RVP e um aumento no Qp/Qs. The Mid-Infrared High-Ionization Lines from Active Galactic Nuclei and Star-Forming Galaxies
We used Spitzer/IRS spectroscopic data on 426 galaxies including quasars,
Seyferts, LINER and HII galaxies to investigate the relationship among the
mid-IR emission lines. There is a tight linear correlation between the [Ne
V]14.3 um and 24.3 um (97.1 eV) and the [O IV]25.9 um (54.9 eV) high-ionization
emission lines. The correlation also holds for these high-ionization emission
lines and the [Ne III]15.56 um (41 eV) emission line, although only for active
galaxies. We used these correlations to calculate the [Ne III] excess due to
star formation in Seyfert galaxies. We also estimated the [O IV] luminosity due
to star formation in active galaxies and determined that it dominates the [O
IV] emission only if the contribution of the active nucleus to the total
luminosity is below 5%. We find that the AGN dominates the [O IV] emission in
most Seyfert galaxies, whereas star-formation adequately explains the observed
[O IV] emission in optically classified HII galaxies. Finally we computed
photoionization models to determine the physical conditions of the narrow line
region where these high-ionization lines originate. The estimated ionization
parameter range is -2.8 < log U < -2.5 and the total hydrogen column density

Is IRAS 01072+4954 a True-Seyfert 2? Hints from Near Infrared Integral Field Spectroscopy
In contrast to the predictions of the unified model, some X-ray unobscured
Seyfert 2 galaxies have been discovered in the last decade. One of them, the
starburst/Seyfert composite galaxy IRAS 01072+4954 (z=0.0236), has a typical
Type~1 X-ray emission, while its optical spectrum resembles an HII galaxy and
lacks the expected broad lines. We performed near-infrared integral-field
observations of this object with the aim to determine the nature of its nuclear
emission and to find indications for the existence or absence of a broad-line
region. Several reasons have been proposed to explain such peculiar emission.
We studied the validity of such hypotheses, including the possibility for it to
be True-Seyfert~2. We found little obscuration towards the nucleus A_V = 2.5
mag, and a nuclear star-formation rate Sigma_SFR < 11.6 Msun yr^{-1} kpc^{-2},
which is below the average in Seyferts. Unresolved hot-dust emission with T ~
1150 K seems to indicate the presence of a torus with its axis close to the
line of sight. We found that IRAS 01072+4954 hosts a low mass black hole with
an estimated mass of M_BH ~ 10^5 Msun and an upper limit of 2.5x10^6 Msun. Its
bolometric luminosity is L_bol ~ 2.5x10^{42} erg/s, which yields a high
accretion rate with an Eddington ratio ~ 0.2. If the relations found in more
massive systems also apply to this case, then IRAS 01072+4954 should show broad
emission lines with FWHM_{broad} ~(400-600) km/s. Indeed, some indications for
such narrow broad-line components are seen in our data, but the evidence is not
yet conclusive. This source thus seems not to be a True-Seyfert 2, but an
extreme case of a narrow line Seyfert 1, which, due to the faintness of the

Probing the Nuclear and Circumnuclear Activity of NGC1365 in the Infrared
We present new far-infrared (70-500micron) Herschel PACS and SPIRE imaging
observations as well as new mid-IR Gemini/T-ReCS imaging (8.7 and 18.3micron)
and spectroscopy of the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) region (R<2.5kpc) of the
spiral galaxy NGC1365. We complemented these observations with archival Spitzer
imaging and spectral mapping observations. The ILR region of NGC1365 contains a
Seyfert 1.5 nucleus and a ring of star formation with an approximate diameter
of 2kpc. The strong star formation activity in the ring is resolved by the
Herschel/PACS imaging data, as well as by the Spitzer 24micron continuum
emission, [NeII]12.81micron line emission, and 6.2 and 11.3micron PAH emission.
The AGN is the brightest source in the central regions up to lambda~24micron,
but it becomes increasingly fainter in the far-infrared when compared to the
emission originating in the infrared clusters (or groups of them) located in
the ring. We modeled the AGN unresolved infrared emission with the CLUMPY torus
models and estimated that the AGN contributes only to a small fraction (~5%) of
the infrared emission produced in the inner ~5kpc. We fitted the non-AGN
24-500micron spectral energy distribution of the ILR region and found that the
dust temperatures and mass are similar to those of other nuclear and
circumnuclear starburst regions. Finally we showed that within the ILR region
of NGC1365 most of the on-going star formation activity is taking place in
dusty regions as probed by the 24micron emission.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
