    Overview and future challenges of nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) design in Southern Europe

    In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out some of the current gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarises the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEB implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The study analyses the present situation and provides an overview on future prospects for nZEB in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEB implementation and especially to the challenge opportunity of retrofitting existing buildings. Creating a common approach to further develop nZEB targets, concepts and definitions in synergy with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe is essential. The paper provides recommendations for actions to shift the identified gaps into opportunities for future development of climate adaptive high performance buildings. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.     Hidden Drug Resistant HIV to Emerge in the Era of Universal Treatment Access in Southeast Asia

    Background: Universal access to first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infection is becoming more of a reality in most low and middle income countries in Asia. However, second-line therapies are relatively scarce. Methods and Findings: We developed a mathematical model of an HIV epidemic in a Southeast Asian setting and used it to forecast the impact of treatment plans, without second-line options, on the potential degree of acquisition and transmission of drug resistant HIV strains. We show that after 10 years of universal treatment access, up to 20 % of treatment-naïve individuals with HIV may have drug-resistant strains but it depends on the relative fitness of viral strains. Conclusions: If viral load testing of people on ART is carried out on a yearly basis and virological failure leads to effective second-line therapy, then transmitted drug resistance could be reduced by 80%. Greater efforts are required for minimizing first-line failure, to detect virological failure earlier, and to procure access to second-line therapies

    Study of 300,486 individuals identifies 148 independent genetic loci influencing general cognitive function

We combine cognitive and genetic data from the CHARGE and COGENT consortia, and UK Biobank (total N = 300,486; age 16-102) and find 148 genome-wide significant independent loci (P <5 x 10(-8)) associated with general cognitive function. Within the novel genetic loci are variants associated with neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders, physical and psychiatric illnesses, and brain structure. Gene-based analyses find 709 genes associated with general cognitive function. Expression levels across the cortex are associated with general cognitive function. Using polygenic scores, up to 4.3% of variance in general cognitive function is predicted in independent samples. We detect significant genetic overlap between general cognitive function, reaction time, and many health variables including eyesight, hypertension, and longevity. In conclusion we identify novel genetic loci and pathways contributing to the heritability of general cognitive function.Peer reviewe

    Application of cellular material in crashworthiness applications: an overview

    Cellular foams are a modern class of materials with unique mechanical properties that have wide ranging engineering applications, in the areas of biomedical, acoustic and thermal insulation, and crashworthiness. Recently, foam materials have received increased attention for vehicle crashworthiness due to their lightweight and excellent energy absorption capabilities that allow significant weight reduction without compromising structural safety aspects. Accordingly, this paper reviews the crush and energy absorption behaviour of foam-filled structures that can be used for crashworthy design in transport engineering. In addition, the mechanical and dynamic properties of cellular material and their role on the crashworthiness performance of filled structure are discussed. Particularly, the influences of foam density and interactions, between the foam and the tubes, on the deformation mode of the filled structures are clarified. The advantages offered by the innovative foam material, which contains a density gradient, on the crashworthiness behaviour are also highlighted. Also, a brief summary of optimisation studies involving the use of foam-filled structures are presented. It was found that the cellular materials improve the crashworthiness performance when they are used as filler material in thin-walled energy absorbers due to their capability of altering the deformation mode to a more favourable one
