    Trust in financial services: Retrospect and prospect

    Fostering and maintaining high levels of trust in the financial services sector is seen as crucial because of the characteristics of many financial service and in order to promote consumer engagement in the sector. In this article, we report evidence from a body of work and other commentary to provide an insight into trends in consumer trust in the sector as a whole, in comparison with other organisations and how different types of financial services provider have performed relative to each other. We show that the financial services sector as a whole is trusted more than some comparator institutions, and that aggregate levels of trust in the sector have fluctuated a relatively small amount subsequent to the financial crisis. However, important differences between provider types are apparent and these differences have become more profound in the recent past. We provide suggestions as to how trust in the sector may be improved and provider an analysis of current initiatives to improve trust levels in the sector in general and in banking in particular

    Choline transporter-like protein 4 (CTL4) links to non-neuronal acetylcholine synthesis.

    Synthesis of acetylcholine (ACh) by non-neuronal cells is now well established and plays diverse physiologic roles. In neurons, the Na(+) -dependent, high affinity choline transporter (CHT1) is absolutely required for ACh synthesis. In contrast, some non-neuronal cells synthesize ACh in the absence of CHT1 indicating a fundamental difference in ACh synthesis compared to neurons. The aim of this study was to identify choline transporters, other than CHT1, that play a role in non-neuronal ACh synthesis. ACh synthesis was studied in lung and colon cancer cell lines focusing on the choline transporter-like proteins, a five gene family choline-transporter like protein (CTL)1-5. Supporting a role for CTLs in choline transport in lung cancer cells, choline transport was Na(+) -independent and CTL1-5 were expressed in all cells examined. CTL1, 2, and 5 were expressed at highest levels and knockdown of CTL1, 2, and 5 decreased choline transport in H82 lung cancer cells. Knockdowns of CTL1, 2, 3, and 5 had no effect on ACh synthesis in H82 cells. In contrast, knockdown of CTL4 significantly decreased ACh secretion by both lung and colon cancer cells. Conversely, increasing expression of CTL4 increased ACh secretion. These results indicate that CTL4 mediates ACh synthesis in non-neuronal cell lines and presents a mechanism to target non-neuronal ACh synthesis without affecting neuronal ACh synthesis

    Antigenic relations between pathogenic Paecilomyces lilacinus and P. variotii and other hyalohyphomycotic agents

    AbstractObjective: The antigenic relations between Paecilomyces variotii and Paecilomyces lilacinus were studied by comparison of their exoantigens.Methods: Forty-one isolates of hyalohyphomycosis-causing fungi including P. lilacinus (n = 15) and P. variotii (n = 12), one isolate each of Paecilomyces inflatus, Paecilomyces marquandii, and Paecilomyces carneus, Fusarium species (n = 3), Neosartorya pseudofischeri (n = 5), and Penicillium species (n = 3), were studied using the exo-antigen test. Ten-day-old extracts derived from Sabouraud's dextrose agar slants were concentrated (25x), and reacted against rabbit anti-P. lilacinus and anti-P. variotii sera in the presence of partially purified homologous antigens (20x) prepared from 5-week-old shaken cultures. Extracts of isolates of P. lilacinus and P. variotii produced one to three lines of identity against the reference homologous antisera. No cross-reactivity or bands of non-identity were observed with other Paecilomyces isolates, N. pseudofischeri, Fusarium species, and Penicillium species isolates.Conclusion: The results of this investigation indicate that P. lilacinus and P. variotii are antigenically distinct and that they can be identified rapidly and accurately by their exoantigens. Exoantigen extracts of morphologically similar fungi and other species of Paecilomyces isolates studied did not possess antigens common to P. lilacinus and P. variotii

    Sexual abuse and HIV-risk behaviour among black and minority ethnic men who have sex with men in the UK

    Black and minority ethnic (BME) men who have sex with men (MSM) face a major burden in relation to HIV infection. It was hypothesised that sexual abuse would predict sexual risk-taking, and that this relationship would be mediated by victimisation and maladaptive coping variables. Four hundred and thirty-two BME MSM completed the survey; 54% reported no sexual abuse and 27% reported sexual abuse. Mann–Whitney tests showed that MSM with a history of sexual abuse reported higher frequency of drug use, and of homophobia and racism than those reporting no prior sexual abuse. A structural equation model showed that the experience of sexual abuse was positively associated with sexual risk-taking and that this relationship was mediated by victimisation variables: frequency of racism and frequency of homophobia and by the maladaptive coping variable: frequency of drug use. The findings can inform the design of psycho-sexual and behavioural interventions for BME MSM

    PLEXdb: gene expression resources for plants and plant pathogens

    PLEXdb (http://www.plexdb.org), in partnership with community databases, supports comparisons of gene expression across multiple plant and pathogen species, promoting individuals and/or consortia to upload genome-scale data sets to contrast them to previously archived data. These analyses facilitate the interpretation of structure, function and regulation of genes in economically important plants. A list of Gene Atlas experiments highlights data sets that give responses across different developmental stages, conditions and tissues. Tools at PLEXdb allow users to perform complex analyses quickly and easily. The Model Genome Interrogator (MGI) tool supports mapping gene lists onto corresponding genes from model plant organisms, including rice and Arabidopsis. MGI predicts homologies, displays gene structures and supporting information for annotated genes and full-length cDNAs. The gene list-processing wizard guides users through PLEXdb functions for creating, analyzing, annotating and managing gene lists. Users can upload their own lists or create them from the output of PLEXdb tools, and then apply diverse higher level analyses, such as ANOVA and clustering. PLEXdb also provides methods for users to track how gene expression changes across many different experiments using the Gene OscilloScope. This tool can identify interesting expression patterns, such as up-regulation under diverse conditions or checking any gene’s suitability as a steady-state control

    Surface-plasmon-polariton wave propagation supported by anisotropic materials: multiple modes and mixed exponential and linear localization characteristics

    The canonical boundary-value problem for surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves guided by the planar interface of a dielectric material and a plasmonic material was solved for cases wherein either partnering material could be a uniaxial material with optic axis lying in the interface plane.Numerical studies revealed that two different SPP waves, with different phase speeds, propagation lengths, and penetration depths, can propagate in a given direction in the interface plane; in contrast, the planar interface of isotropic partnering materials supports only one SPP wave for each propagation direction. Also, for a unique propagation direction in each quadrant of the interface plane, it was demonstrated that a new type of SPP wave--called a surface-plasmon-polariton-Voigt (SPP-V) wave--can exist. The fields of these SPP-V waves decay as the product of a linear and an exponential function of the distance from the interface in the anisotropic partnering material; in contrast, the fields of conventional SPP waves decay only exponentially with distance from the interface. Explicit analytic solutions of the dispersion relation for SPP-V waves exist and help establish constraints on the constitutive-parameter regimes for the partnering materials that support SPP-V-wave propagation

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
