An embedding technique to determine ττ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data

    Get PDF
An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model tau tau backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed mu mu events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way, a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. The technique described in this paper was developed for CMS. Its validation and the inherent uncertainties are also discussed. The demonstration of the performance of the technique is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS in 2017 at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1).Peer reviewe

Performance of missing transverse momentum reconstruction in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV using the CMS detector

The performance of missing transverse momentum ((p) over right arrow (miss)(T)) reconstruction algorithms for the CMS experiment is presented, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected at the CERN LHC in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The results include measurements of the scale and resolution of (p) over right arrow (miss)(T), and detailed studies of events identified with anomalous (p) over right arrow (miss)(T). The performance is presented of a (p) over right arrow (miss)(T) reconstruction algorithm that mitigates the effects of multiple proton-proton interactions, using the "pileup per particle identification" method. The performance is shown of an algorithm used to estimate the compatibility of the reconstructed (p) over right arrow (miss)(T) with the hypothesis that it originates from resolution effects.Peer reviewe

Search for the dark photon in pi(0) decays

    No full text
A sample of 1.69 x 10(7) fully reconstructed pi(0) -> gamma e(+)e(-) decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN in 2003-2004 is analyzed to search for the dark photon (A') production in the pi(0) -> gamma A' decay followed by the prompt A' -> e(+)e(-) decay. No signal is observed, and an exclusion region in the plane of the dark photon mass m(A') and mixing parameter epsilon(2) is established. The obtained upper limits on epsilon(2) are more stringent than the previous limits in the mass range 9 MeV/c(2) pi(+/-)A' decay is also evaluated. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V

Study of the K-+/- -> pi(+/-)gamma gamma decay by the NA62 experiment

    No full text
A study of the dynamics of the rare decay K-+/- -> pi(+/-)gamma gamma has been performed on a sample of 232 decay candidates, with an estimated background of 17.4 +/- 1.1 events, collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007. The results are combined with those from a measurement conducted by the NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN. The combined model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = (m gamma gamma/m(K))(2) > 0.2 is B-MI(z > 0.2) = (0.965 +/- 0.063) x 10(-6), and the combined branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a Chiral Perturbation Theory description is B(K-pi gamma gamma) = (1.003 +/- 0.056) x 10(-6). A detailed comparison of the results with the previous measurements is performed. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V

Performance of the CMS missing transverse momentum reconstruction in pp data at √s= 8 TeV

    No full text
The performance of missing transverse energy reconstruction algorithms is presented using root s = 8 TeV proton-proton (pp) data collected with the CMS detector. Events with anomalous missing transverse energy are studied, and the performance of algorithms used to identify and remove these events is presented. The scale and resolution for missing transverse energy, including the effects of multiple pp interactions (pileup), are measured using events with an identified Z boson or isolated photon, and are found to be well described by the simulation. Novel missing transverse energy reconstruction algorithms developed specifically to mitigate the effects of large numbers of pileup interactions on the missing transverse energy resolution are presented. These algorithms significantly reduce the dependence of the missing transverse energy resolution on pileup interactions. Finally, an algorithm that provides an estimate of the significance of the missing transverse energy is presented, which is used to estimate the compatibility of the reconstructed missing transverse energy with a zero nominal value

Search for a standard model-like Higgs boson in the mu(+)mu(-) and e(+)e(-) decay channels at the LHC

    No full text
A search is presented for a standard model-like Higgs boson decaying to the mu(+)mu(-) or e(+)e(-) final states based on proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 5.0 fb(-1) at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 fb(-1) at 8 TeV for the mu(+)mu(-) search, and of 19.7 fb(-1) at 8 TeV for the e(+)e(-) search. Upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction at the 95% confidence level are reported for Higgs boson masses in the range from 120 to 150 GeV. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV decaying to mu(+)mu(-), the observed (expected) upper limit on the production rate is found to be 7.4 (6.5(-1.9)(+2.8)) times the standard model value. This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of 0.0016. Similarly, for e(+)e(-), an upper limit of 0.0019 is placed on the branching fraction, which is approximate to 3.7 x 10(5) times the standard model value. These results, together with recent evidence of the 125 GeV boson coupling to tau-leptons with a larger branching fraction consistent with the standard model, confirm that the leptonic couplings of the new boson are not flavour-universal

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and two b jets in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV

    No full text
The production cross section for a Wboson and two b jets is measured using proton-proton collisions at v root s = 7 TeV in a data sample collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb(-1). The W + bbevents are selected in the W..decay mode by requiring a muon with transverse momentum pT> 25GeVand pseudorapidity |eta| 25GeVand |eta| < 2.4. The measured W + bbproduction cross section in the fiducial region, calculated at the level of final-state particles, is s(pp. W + bb) xB(W..) = 0.53 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) +/- 0.06 (theo.) 0.01 (lum.) pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. In addition, kinematic distributions of the W + bbsystem are in agreement with the predictions of a simulation usingMadGraphandpythia

Description and performance of track and primary-vertex reconstruction with the CMS tracker

    No full text
A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For t (t) over bar events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average track-reconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of p(T) > 0.9GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of p(T) = 100GeV emitted at vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in p(T), and respectively, 10 m m and 30 mu m in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10-12 mu m in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung

Alignment of the CMS tracker with LHC and cosmic ray data

The central component of the CMS detector is the largest silicon tracker ever built. The precise alignment of this complex device is a formidable challenge, and only achievable with a significant extension of the technologies routinely used for tracking detectors in the past. This article describes the full-scale alignment procedure as it is used during LHC operations. Among the specific features of the method are the simultaneous determination of up to 200 000 alignment parameters with tracks, the measurement of individual sensor curvature parameters, the control of systematic misalignment effects, and the implementation of the whole procedure in a multiprocessor environment for high execution speed. Overall, the achieved statistical accuracy on the module alignment is found to be significantly better than 10 mu m

Measurement of electroweak production of a W boson in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV

    No full text
    A measurement is presented of electroweak (EW) production of a W boson in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV. The data sample was recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1^{-1}. The measurement is performed for the â„“Îœ\ell\nujj final state (with â„“Îœ\ell\nu indicating a lepton-neutrino pair, and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in a kinematic region defined by invariant mass mjj>m_\mathrm{jj} > 120 GeV and transverse momenta pTj>p_\mathrm{T j} > 25 GeV. The cross section of the process is measured in the electron and muon channels yielding σEW(\sigma_\mathrm{EW}(Wjj)=)= 6.23±\pm0.12 (stat)±\pm 0.61 (syst) pb per channel, in agreement with leading-order standard model predictions. The additional hadronic activity of events in a signal-enriched region is studied, and the measurements are compared with predictions. The final state is also used to perform a search for anomalous trilinear gauge couplings. Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95% confidence level intervals are −-2.3 <cWWW/Λ2<< c_{\mathrm{WWW}}/\Lambda^2 < 2.5 TeV−2^{-2}, −-8.8 <cW/Λ2<< c_{\mathrm{W}}/\Lambda^2 < 16 TeV−2^{-2}, and −-45 <cB/Λ2<< c_{\mathrm{B}}/\Lambda^2 < 46 TeV−2^{-2}. These results are combined with the CMS EW Zjj analysis, yielding the most stringent limit to date on the cWWWc_{\mathrm{WWW}} coupling: −-1.8 <cWWW/Λ2<< c_{\mathrm{WWW}}/\Lambda^2 < 2.0 TeV−2^{-2}
