    Multiobjective Tactical Planning under Uncertainty for Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management

    We investigate a method to deal with congestion of sectors and delays in the tactical phase of air traffic flow and capacity management. It relies on temporal objectives given for every point of the flight plans and shared among the controllers in order to create a collaborative environment. This would enhance the transition from the network view of the flow management to the local view of air traffic control. Uncertainty is modeled at the trajectory level with temporal information on the boundary points of the crossed sectors and then, we infer the probabilistic occupancy count. Therefore, we can model the accuracy of the trajectory prediction in the optimization process in order to fix some safety margins. On the one hand, more accurate is our prediction; more efficient will be the proposed solutions, because of the tighter safety margins. On the other hand, when uncertainty is not negligible, the proposed solutions will be more robust to disruptions. Furthermore, a multiobjective algorithm is used to find the tradeoff between the delays and congestion, which are antagonist in airspace with high traffic density. The flow management position can choose manually, or automatically with a preference-based algorithm, the adequate solution.     A multi-objective genetic algorithm for the design of pressure swing adsorption

    Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is a cyclic separation process, more advantageous over other separation options for middle scale processes. Automated tools for the design of PSA processes would be beneficial for the development of the technology, but their development is a difficult task due to the complexity of the simulation of PSA cycles and the computational effort needed to detect the performance at cyclic steady state. We present a preliminary investigation of the performance of a custom multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) for the optimisation of a fast cycle PSA operation, the separation of air for N2 production. The simulation requires a detailed diffusion model, which involves coupled nonlinear partial differential and algebraic equations (PDAEs). The efficiency of MOGA to handle this complex problem has been assessed by comparison with direct search methods. An analysis of the effect of MOGA parameters on the performance is also presented

    Improved dynamical particle swarm optimization method for structural dynamics

    A methodology to the multiobjective structural design of buildings based on an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented, which has proved to be very efficient and robust in nonlinear problems and when the optimization objectives are in conflict. In particular, the behaviour of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) classical algorithm is improved by dynamically adding autoadaptive mechanisms that enhance the exploration/exploitation trade-off and diversity of the proposed algorithm, avoiding getting trapped in local minima. A novel integrated optimization system was developed, called DI-PSO, to solve this problem which is able to control and even improve the structural behaviour under seismic excitations. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the methodology is tested against some benchmark problems. Then a 3-story-building model is optimized under different objective cases, concluding that the improved multiobjective optimization methodology using DI-PSO is more efficient as compared with those designs obtained using single optimization.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Enhanced genetic algorithm-based fuzzy multiobjective strategy to multiproduct batch plant design

    The design of such plants necessary involves how equipment may be utilized, which means that plant scheduling and production must form an integral part of the design problem. This work proposes an alternative treatment of the imprecision (demands) by using fuzzy concepts. In this study, we introduce a new approach to the design problem based on a multiobjective genetic algorithm, taking into account simultaneously maximization of the net present value NPV ~ and two other performance criteria, i.e. the production delay/advance and a flexibility criterion. The methodology provides a set of scenarios that are helpful to the decision’s maker and constitutes a very promising framework for taken imprecision into account in new product development stage. Besides, a hybrid selection method Pareto rank-tournament was proposed and showed a better performance than the classical Goldberg’s wheel, systematically leading to a higher number of non-dominated solutions

    Ecodesign of Batch Processes: Optimal Design Strategies for Economic and Ecological Bioprocesses

    This work deals with the multicriteria cost-environment design of multiproduct batch plants, where the design variables are the equipment item sizes as well as the operating conditions. The case study is a multiproduct batch plant for the production of four recombinant proteins. Given the important combinatorial aspect of the problem, the approach used consists in coupling a stochastic algorithm, indeed a Genetic Algorithm (GA) with a Discrete Event Simulator (DES). To take into account the conflicting situations that may be encountered at the earliest stage of batch plant design, i.e. compromise situations between cost and environmental consideration, a Multicriteria Genetic Algorithm (MUGA) was developed with a Pareto optimal ranking method. The results show how the methodology can be used to find a range of trade-off solutions for optimizing batch plant design

    Spatial optimization for land use allocation: accounting for sustainability concerns

    Land-use allocation has long been an important area of research in regional science. Land-use patterns are fundamental to the functions of the biosphere, creating interactions that have substantial impacts on the environment. The spatial arrangement of land uses therefore has implications for activity and travel within a region. Balancing development, economic growth, social interaction, and the protection of the natural environment is at the heart of long-term sustainability. Since land-use patterns are spatially explicit in nature, planning and management necessarily must integrate geographical information system and spatial optimization in meaningful ways if efficiency goals and objectives are to be achieved. This article reviews spatial optimization approaches that have been relied upon to support land-use planning. Characteristics of sustainable land use, particularly compactness, contiguity, and compatibility, are discussed and how spatial optimization techniques have addressed these characteristics are detailed.     Metaheuristic design of feedforward neural networks: a review of two decades of research

    Over the past two decades, the feedforward neural network (FNN) optimization has been a key interest among the researchers and practitioners of multiple disciplines. The FNN optimization is often viewed from the various perspectives: the optimization of weights, network architecture, activation nodes, learning parameters, learning environment, etc. Researchers adopted such different viewpoints mainly to improve the FNN's generalization ability. The gradient-descent algorithm such as backpropagation has been widely applied to optimize the FNNs. Its success is evident from the FNN's application to numerous real-world problems. However, due to the limitations of the gradient-based optimization methods, the metaheuristic algorithms including the evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, etc., are still being widely explored by the researchers aiming to obtain generalized FNN for a given problem. This article attempts to summarize a broad spectrum of FNN optimization methodologies including conventional and metaheuristic approaches. This article also tries to connect various research directions emerged out of the FNN optimization practices, such as evolving neural network (NN), cooperative coevolution NN, complex-valued NN, deep learning, extreme learning machine, quantum NN, etc. Additionally, it provides interesting research challenges for future research to cope-up with the present information processing era

    Identification of probabilistic cellular automata

    The identification of probabilistic cellular automata (PCA) is studied using a new two stage neighborhood detection algorithm. It is shown that a binary probabilistic cellular automaton (BPCA) can be described by an integer-parameterized polynomial corrupted by noise. Searching for the correct neighborhood of a BPCA is then equivalent to selecting the correct terms which constitute the polynomial model of the BPCA, from a large initial term set. It is proved that the contribution values for the correct terms can be calculated independently of the contribution values for the noise terms. This allows the neighborhood detection technique developed for deterministic rules in to be applied with a larger cutoff value to discard the majority of spurious terms and to produce an initial presearch for the BPCA neighborhood. A multiobjective genetic algorithm (GA) search with integer constraints is then evolved to refine the reduced neighborhood and to identify the polynomial rule which is equivalent to the probabilistic rule with the largest probability. A probability table representing the BPCA can then be determined based on the identified neighborhood and the deterministic rule. The new algorithm is tested over a large set of one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) BPCA rules. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the new method
