    When You\u27re Out, You\u27re Not Really Out: Exiting Strategies Among Gang-Affiliated Chicanas

    In recent years there has been an increased focus on gang desistence and exiting strategies, yet little is known at present regarding the experiences of women exiting the gang lifestyle. The current study, based on semi-structured interviews with twenty-four formerly gang-affiliated Chicana women involved with a prominent gang prevention/intervention organization, sought to understand how these women negotiated their disengagement from the gang. Consistent with previous literature, we found that disengagement from the gang lifestyle is neither linear nor immediate. Five primary themes that emerged from the interviews included: (1) the process of identity transition; (2) motherhood and its responsibilities; (3) generational shifts in gang culture; (4) burning bridges; (5) impacts of prison; and (6) support services. The women\u27s narratives offer an alternative lens through which to understand women’s negotiation of their own identities through the process of disengagement from the gang

    “’My walk matches my talk’: An exploratory study of a moral rehabilitation program for incarcerated women.”

    While there have been numerous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of moral rehabilitation prison educational programs, few have focused on the effectiveness of these programs for incarcerated women. The current research is an exploratory study based upon eight participants’ initial perceptions of a four-year bachelor’s program in theology, taught through the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS). Our preliminary results are consistent with the previous literature about NOBTS students’ histories of abuse and tragedy, straying from faith, negotiation of identity, and programming challenges the students face. These women’s narratives provide an initial exploration into the ways in which the NOBTS program has impacted these women within the carceral setting

    Pediatric polysomnography-flagging etiologies and impact on the clinical timeline

    Background/objectiveThere is a paucity of literature regarding “flagging” abnormal sleep studies for expedited review. This single-center retrospective analysis (n = 266) of flagged polysomnography studies from 2019 to 2022 aimed to investigate flagging and its impact on the clinical timeline.MethodsTwo hundred sixty-six flagged polysomnography studies from 2019 to 2022 were retrospectively reviewed.ResultsFlagged study etiologies included repetitive brief oxygen desaturations (46.6%), sustained desaturations (32.3%), sustained hypercapnia (5.6%), or other concerning events (15.5%). The median time between a flagged study and scoring report finalization, medical intervention, and surgical intervention were 0 (2) days, 2 (3) days, 5 (11.25) days, and 44 (73) days, respectively. Patients with apnea–hypopnea index >30 had less time between a flagged study and surgical intervention (65.3 ± 96.7 days vs. 112 ± 119 days, p = 0.044).ConclusionAs anticipated, the time to surgical intervention was longer than to medical intervention. Patients with a higher disease severity experienced quicker scoring, report finalization, and surgical intervention

    Controlling the motor activity of a transcription-repair coupling factor: autoinhibition and the role of RNA polymerase

    Motor proteins that couple ATP hydrolysis to movement along nucleic acids play a variety of essential roles in DNA metabolism. Often these enzymes function as components of macromolecular complexes, and DNA translocation by the motor protein drives movement of other components of the complex. In order to understand how the activity of motor proteins is regulated within multi-protein complexes we have studied the bacterial transcription-repair coupling factor, Mfd, which is a helicase superfamily 2 member that binds to RNA polymerase (RNAP) and removes stalled transcription complexes from DNA. Using an oligonucleotide displacement assay that monitors protein movement on double-stranded DNA we show that Mfd has little motor activity in isolation, but exhibits efficient oligonucleotide displacement activity when bound to a stalled transcription complex. Deletion of the C-terminal domain of Mfd increases the ATPase activity of the protein and allows efficient oligo-displacement in the absence of RNAP. Our results suggest that an autoinhibitory domain ensures the motor activity of Mfd is only functional within the correct macromolecular context: recruitment of Mfd to a stalled transcription complex relieves the autoinhibition and unmasks the motor activity

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Bi-allelic Loss-of-Function CACNA1B Mutations in Progressive Epilepsy-Dyskinesia.

    The occurrence of non-epileptic hyperkinetic movements in the context of developmental epileptic encephalopathies is an increasingly recognized phenomenon. Identification of causative mutations provides an important insight into common pathogenic mechanisms that cause both seizures and abnormal motor control. We report bi-allelic loss-of-function CACNA1B variants in six children from three unrelated families whose affected members present with a complex and progressive neurological syndrome. All affected individuals presented with epileptic encephalopathy, severe neurodevelopmental delay (often with regression), and a hyperkinetic movement disorder. Additional neurological features included postnatal microcephaly and hypotonia. Five children died in childhood or adolescence (mean age of death: 9 years), mainly as a result of secondary respiratory complications. CACNA1B encodes the pore-forming subunit of the pre-synaptic neuronal voltage-gated calcium channel Cav2.2/N-type, crucial for SNARE-mediated neurotransmission, particularly in the early postnatal period. Bi-allelic loss-of-function variants in CACNA1B are predicted to cause disruption of Ca2+ influx, leading to impaired synaptic neurotransmission. The resultant effect on neuronal function is likely to be important in the development of involuntary movements and epilepsy.
