    Multi-view Face Pose Classification by Boosting with Weak Hypothesis Fusion Using Visual and Infrared Images

    This paper proposes a novel method for multi-view face pose classification through sequential learning and sensor fusion. The basic idea is to use face images observed in visual and thermal infrared (IR) bands, with the same sampling weight in a multi-class boosting structure. The main contribution of this paper is a multi-class AdaBoost classification framework where information obtained from visual and infrared bands interactively complement each other. This is achieved by learning weak hypothesis for visual and IR band independently and then fusing the optimized hypothesis sub-ensembles. In addition, an effective feature descriptor is introduced to thermal IR images. Experiments are conducted on a visual and thermal IR image dataset containing 4844 face images in 5 different poses. Results have shown significant increase in classification rate as compared with an existing multi-class AdaBoost algorithm SAMME trained on visual or infrared images alone, as well as a simple baseline classification-fusion algorithm

    Riemannian Manifold-Based Support Vector Machine for Human Activity Classification in Images

    This paper addresses the issue of classification of human activities in still images. We propose a novel method where part-based features focusing on human and object interaction are utilized for activity representation, and classification is designed on manifolds by exploiting underlying Riemannian geometry. The main contributions of the paper include: (a) represent human activity by appearance features from image patches containing hands, and by structural features formed from the distances between the torso and patch centers; (b) formulate SVM kernel function based on the geodesics on Riemannian manifolds under the log-Euclidean metric; (c) apply multi-class SVM classifier on the manifold under the one-against-all strategy. Experiments were conducted on a dataset containing 2750 images in 7 classes of activities from 10 subjects. Results have shown good performance (average classification rate of 95.83%, false positive 0.71%, false negative 4.24%). Comparisons with three other related classifiers provide further support to the proposed method

    Effects of various additives to enhance growth performance, blood profiles, and reduce malodour emissions in growing pigs

    Experiment 1 was a feeding trial in which 75 (Landrace ⅹ Yorkshire) ⅹ Duroc pigs with average initial bodyweight (BW) of 26 ± 1 kg were used. It was assigned to three pigs/pen and five pens/treatment. Experiment 2 was a metabolic trial in which 25 (LandraceⅹYorkshire)ⅹDuroc pigs with average initial bodyweight (BW) of 36 ± 1 kg were used. The basal diet consisted of maize (57.71 %), soybean meal (32.45 %), and wheat bran (5 %). Treatments consisted of i) CON (control diet); ii) OE (organic acid + essential oils) (Aviplus-S®), that is, CON + 0.05 % OE; iii) OC (organic charcoal) (Olga Black®), that is, CON + 0.1 % OC; iv) AE (anise extracts) (RESQ®), that is, CON + 0.015 % AE; and v) PB (probiotics) (Bonvital®), that is, CON + 0.1 % PB. Average daily gain (ADG) and gain/feed ratio (G : F) were significantly higher in the OE and AE groups than in the others. Average daily feed intake (ADFI) for OE, OC, and AE treatments was significantly higher than that for CON and PB treatments. Dry matter (DM) digestibility was significantly higher in AE than CON. Crude protein (CP) was significantly higher in OE, AE, and PB than CON. CON and other treatments did not cause significant differences in blood l-density lipoprotein (LDL), and glucose. NH3 emissions were significantly lower in all treated groups than in CON. Among the treatments, NH3 emissions were lowest in OE and AE. H2S emissions were significantly lower in OE, AE, and PB than in CON. Among the treatments, OE and AE were most effective at reducing H2S emissions. The emissions of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) showed no significant difference between treatments and CON. In conclusion, this experiment was shown to be more effective on growth performance, malodour emission, blood profiles, and nutrient digestibility in OE and AE than other additives.Keywords: Digestibility, feed, influence, odour, supplementation, swin

    Running coupling: Does the coupling between dark energy and dark matter change sign during the cosmological evolution?

    In this paper we put forward a running coupling scenario for describing the interaction between dark energy and dark matter. The dark sector interaction in our scenario is free of the assumption that the interaction term QQ is proportional to the Hubble expansion rate and the energy densities of dark sectors. We only use a time-variable coupling b(a)b(a) (with aa the scale factor of the universe) to characterize the interaction QQ. We propose a parametrization form for the running coupling b(a)=b0a+be(1a)b(a)=b_0a+b_e(1-a) in which the early-time coupling is given by a constant beb_e, while today the coupling is given by another constant, b0b_0. For investigating the feature of the running coupling, we employ three dark energy models, namely, the cosmological constant model (w=1w=-1), the constant ww model (w=w0w=w_0), and the time-dependent ww model (w(a)=w0+w1(1a)w(a)=w_0+w_1(1-a)). We constrain the models with the current observational data, including the type Ia supernova, the baryon acoustic oscillation, the cosmic microwave background, the Hubble expansion rate, and the X-ray gas mass fraction data. The fitting results indicate that a time-varying vacuum scenario is favored, in which the coupling b(z)b(z) crosses the noninteracting line (b=0b=0) during the cosmological evolution and the sign changes from negative to positive. The crossing of the noninteracting line happens at around z=0.20.3z=0.2-0.3, and the crossing behavior is favored at about 1σ\sigma confidence level. Our work implies that we should pay more attention to the time-varying vacuum model and seriously consider the phenomenological construction of a sign-changeable or oscillatory interaction between dark sectors.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; refs added; to appear in EPJ

    Immune-Related Gene Expression in Two B-Complex Disparate Genetically Inbred Fayoumi Chicken Lines Following Eimeria maxima Infection

    To investigate the influence of genetic differences in the MHC on susceptibility to avian coccidiosis, M5.1 and M15.2 B-haplotype-disparate Fayoumi chickens were orally infected with live Eimeria maxima oocysts, and BW gain, fecal oocyst production, and expression of 14 immune-related genes were determined as parameters of protective immunity. Weight loss was reduced and fecal parasite numbers were lower in birds of the M5.1 line compared with M15.2 line birds. Intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes from M5.1 chickens expressed greater levels of transcripts encoding interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-15, IL-17A, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and lipopolysaccharide-induced tumor necrosis factor-α factor and lower levels of mRNA for IFN-α, IL-10, IL-17D, NK-lysin, and tumor necrosis factor superfamily 15 compared with the M15.2 line. In the spleen, E. maxima infection was associated with greater expression levels of IFN-γ, IL-15, and IL-8 and lower levels of IL-6, IL-17D, and IL-12 in M5.1 vs. M15.2 birds. These results suggest that genetic determinants within the chicken MHC influence resistance to E. maxima infection by controlling the local and systemic expression of immune-related cytokine and chemokine genes

    Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.     Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

    A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
