    Nitrogen cycling in muddy sediments of Great Peconic Bay, USA: Seasonal N reaction balances and multi-year flux patterns

    To better understand the capacity of sediments to serve as both source and sink of nitrogen (N) and to identify any evidence of evolving changes in sedimentary N cycling, N2 production, N remineralization, and N2 fixation were studied over a multi-year period (2010–2015) in bioturbated mud of Great Peconic Bay, a temperate northeastern U. S. estuary. Benthic fluxes and rates of organic matter remineralization were measured using in situ and ex situ incubations. Net annual NH+ 4, NO–3/NO–2, and N2–N fluxes (μ = 1.1, 0.03, and 1.2 mmol m –2d –1) were close to averages for comparable sedi- mentary environments from surveys of published field studies. Net N2 fluxes (by membrane inlet mass spectrometry) were influenced in different periods by temperature, oxygenation of sediment, pulsed Corg, and the activity of benthic macrofauna and benthic microalgae, although no single physical or biogeochemical variable showed a strong, direct relationship with net N2 fluxes over all sampling periods. In situ measurements sometimes showed more dynamic and higher amplitude diurnal N flux cycles than did ex situ incubations, suggesting ex situ incubations did not fully capture impacts of bioirrigation or benthic photosynthesis.15 N tracer experiments indicated anammox was \u3c 7% of total N2 production. Acetylene reduction assays demonstrated C2 H4 production to depths ≥ 15 cm and suggested N2 fixation may have approached 25% of gross N2 production(3:1 C2 H4 : N2). Mass balances incorporating independently measured N remineralization estimates were consistent with measured levels of N2 fixation. Overall, complex balances of competing processes governed sedimentary N cycling seasonally, and N2 production dominated N2 fixation. Measured N2 fixation was consistent with constraints from N remineralization rates and net N fluxes except in episodic conditions (e. g., algal blooms). There was no indication of progressive changes in N cycling magnitudes or relative N reaction balances over the study period

    Seasonal, 2-D sedimentary extracellular enzyme activities and controlling processes in Great Peconic Bay, Long Island

    Extracellular enzymes (EE) initiate heterotrophic remineralization by hydrolyzing high-molecularweight organic matter to substrates that are sufficiently small (approximately 600 Da) to be transported across cell membranes. An accurate understanding of EE associated remineralization processes in sedimentary deposits requires measuring patterns of extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) with minimal disturbance of natural sediment structure. In this study, two-dimensional patterns of extracellular enzyme (leucine aminopeptidase) activity in shallow-water, marine sediments from Great Peconic Bay, Long Island, New York were examined seasonally at sub-millimeter resolution by using a newly developed EE planar fluorosensor. Comparisons of spatially averaged, vertical enzyme activity profiles measured using this imaging sensor system and traditional sediment homogenization techniques verified the overall consistency of the methodology. The depth-averaged EEA (approximately 10 cm) varied seasonally with highest levels in the late spring through summer (0.2 μmol substrate g-wet-wt–1 hr–1) and lowest in the late fall and early winter (0.1 μmol substrate g-wet-wt–1 hr–1). EEA distributions, however, showed extensive small-scale horizontal heterogeneity as well as vertical variations. Both the input of reactive substrates (planktonic organic matter) and temperature differences accounted for major changes in EEA seasonally. In general, horizontal heterogeneity in EEA was greatest during warm seasons (summer, fall) as a result of increased macrofaunal activity. On the other hand, vertical variations are less significant during warm periods compared with cold periods as the sediment is more intensely reworked. Hot spots of elevated microbial activity from sub-millimeter to millimeter scales are observed in some seasons and are specifically associated with substrate inputs from phytoplankton blooms and particle reworking by infauna. The deposition of phytodetritus from an early spring bloom greatly enhanced surface sediment EEA, and at this time high EEA closely coincided with regions of elevated metabolite production as measured by NH+4 and ΣCO2 concentrations. Direct correlations between averaged EEA distributions and nutrient production rates were observed throughout the year but no correlations between EEA and pore water nutrient concentrations were present. Spatially resolved EEA directly tracks reactive particle distributions and is generally independent of solute transport mechanisms, such as bioirrigation, and redox conditions

They have paved the way for the molecular and genomic era, and most of today's crop plants are derived from breeding programs involving mutagenic treatments.RESULTS: Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most widely grown cereals in the world and has a long history as a crop plant. Barley breeding started more than 100 years ago and large breeding programs have collected and generated a wide range of natural and induced mutants, which often were deposited in genebanks around the world. In recent years, an increased interest in genetic diversity has brought many historic mutants into focus because the collections are regarded as valuable resources for understanding the genetic control of barley biology and barley breeding. The increased interest has been fueled also by recent advances in genomic research, which provided new tools and possibilities to analyze and reveal the genetic diversity of mutant collections.CONCLUSION: Since detailed knowledge about phenotypic characters of the mutants is the key to success of genetic and genomic studies, we here provide a comprehensive description of mostly morphological barley mutants.     Foveal contour interaction for low contrast acuity targets

    Previous investigators reported the impairment of foveal visual acuity by nearby flanking targets (contour interaction) is reduced or eliminated when acuity is measured using low contrast targets. Unlike earlier studies, we compared contour interaction for high and low contrast acuity targets using flankers at fixed angular separations, rather than at specific multiples of the acuity target’s stroke width. Percent correct letter identification was determined in 4 adult observers for computer generated, high and low contrast dark Sloan letters surrounded by 4 equal contrast flanking bars. Two low contrast targets were selected to reduce each observer’s visual acuity by 0.2 and 0.4 logMAR. The crowding functions measured for high and low contrast letters are very similar when percent correct letter identification is plotted against the flanker separation in min arc. These results indicate that contour interaction of foveal acuity targets occurs within a fixed angular zone of a few min arc, regardless of the size or contrast of the acuity target

    The HIPASS Catalogue - II. Completeness, Reliability, and Parameter Accuracy

    The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind extragalactic HI 21-cm emission line survey covering the whole southern sky from declination -90 to +25. The HIPASS catalogue (HICAT), containing 4315 HI-selected galaxies from the region south of declination +2, is presented in Meyer et al. (2004a, Paper I). This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT, which are calculated from the recovery rate of synthetic sources and follow-up observations, respectively. HICAT is found to be 99 per cent complete at a peak flux of 84 mJy and an integrated flux of 9.4 Jy km/s. The overall reliability is 95 per cent, but rises to 99 per cent for sources with peak fluxes >58 mJy or integrated flux > 8.2 Jy km/s. Expressions are derived for the uncertainties on the most important HICAT parameters: peak flux, integrated flux, velocity width, and recessional velocity. The errors on HICAT parameters are dominated by the noise in the HIPASS data, rather than by the parametrization procedure.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 12 pages, 11 figures.     Effects of antiplatelet therapy on stroke risk by brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases: subgroup analyses of the RESTART randomised, open-label trial

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage. We did subgroup analyses of the RESTART trial to explore whether these brain imaging features modify the effects of antiplatelet therapy

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    The Northern HIPASS catalogue - Data presentation, completeness and reliability measures

    The Northern HIPASS catalogue (NHICAT) is the northern extension of the HIPASS catalogue, HICAT (Meyer et al. 2004). This extension adds the sky area between the declination range of +2 deg < dec. < +25.5 deg to HICAT's declination range of -90 deg < dec. < +2 deg. HIPASS is a blind HI survey using the Parkes Radio Telescope covering 71% of the sky (including this northern extension) and a heliocentric velocity range of -1,280 km/s to 12,700 km/s . The entire Virgo Cluster region has been observed in the Northern HIPASS. The galaxy catalogue, NHICAT, contains 1002 sources with v_hel > 300 km/s . Sources with -300 km/s < v_hel < 300 km/s were excluded to avoid contamination by Galactic emission. In total, the entire HIPASS survey has found 5317 galaxies identified purely by their HI content.     Materials for Diabetes Therapeutics

    This review is focused on the materials and methods used to fabricate closed-loop systems for type 1 diabetes therapy. Herein, we give a brief overview of current methods used for patient care and discuss two types of possible treatments and the materials used for these therapies–(i) artificial pancreases, comprised of insulin producing cells embedded in a polymeric biomaterial, and (ii) totally synthetic pancreases formulated by integrating continuous glucose monitors with controlled insulin release through degradable polymers and glucose-responsive polymer systems. Both the artificial and the completely synthetic pancreas have two major design requirements: the device must be both biocompatible and be permeable to small molecules and proteins, such as insulin. Several polymers and fabrication methods of artificial pancreases are discussed: microencapsulation, conformal coatings, and planar sheets. We also review the two components of a completely synthetic pancreas.
