    MONITOR AMBIENTAL: QUALIDADE DAS ÁGUAS

    O curso de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental, sob a orientação do professor e coordenador do curso Andrei Goldbach, realizou o projeto de extensão MONITOR AMBIENTAL. Na sua segunda edição, o projeto contou com a participação de 75 alunos do ensino Fundamental da rede pública de ensino dos municípios de Videira e de Pinheiro Preto. O projeto ainda contou com o apoio do Comitê do Rio do Peixe e da GERED de Videira. Foram desenvolvidos 5 módulos de áreas distintas para proporcionar ao aluno um conhecimento global sobre o assunto. Os módulos foram divididos em: I: Recursos Hídricos e Energias Alternativas; II: Bacias Hidrográficas; III: Resíduos Sólidos; IV: Saneamento básico e V: Vigilância em Saúde. No último encontro foi realizado uma formatura com entrega de certificado de participação reunindo todos os 75 alunos partipantes, diretores das escolas, diretor de graduação da UNOESC de Videira e o Vice reitor de campus Ildo Fabris. No módulo de qualidade das águas, os alunos tiveram a oportunidade de realizar dois ensaios laboratoriais: i) ensaio de floculação-coagulação em jartest e, ii) ensaio fotoquímico em fotoreator na presença de radiação UVC e peróxido de hidrogênio. Adicionalmente, os alunos assistiram uma explanação sobre o ciclo da água, coleta e tratamento de água para abastecimento público. Conclui-se com o trabalho desenvolvido que  o desenvolvimento de atividades de educação ambiental associadas às atividades laboratoriais e de pesquisa na Universidade, contribuem de forma significativa na formação do aluno como futuro cidadão

    EDUCAÇÃO AMBIENTAL NAS ESCOLAS DE ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL DO MEIO OESTE CATARINENSE: MÓDULO SANEAMENTO BÁSICO

    O curso de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental, com o intuito de promover a educação ambiental e formar agentes de transformação nas comunidades, implantou o projeto de Extensão de Educação Ambiental nas escolas de Ensino Fundamental do Meio Oeste Catarinense, visando o desenvolvimento dos "monitores ambientais". O projeto é realizado em parceria com o Comitê do Rio do Peixe e com a GERED. Na primeira etapa do projeto foram ofertadas atividades a duas turmas do 6° ano da Escola de Educação Básica Maura de Senna Pereira de Pinheiro Preto e ao 6° ano da Escola de Educação Básica Esther Crema Marmentini de Videira. O projeto é divido em cinco módulos, sendo no Módulo III abordado o tema Saneamento Básico, cuja aulas foram ministradas pela professora Carla Suntti com auxílio dos acadêmicos voluntários: Dara Miranda, Arthur Alfredo Seidel e Crislaine Campos Maccari. Neste módulo os estudantes conheceram a história “Vida de Esgoto” e puderam compreender como o esgoto é formado, além dos problemas causados pelo lançamento do esgoto sem tratamento em corpos d’água. Durante a aula foi apresentado como funciona o tratamento do esgoto nas nossas moradias e a responsabilidade de cada cidadão. Para finalizar a aula, falou-se da importância da higienização das mãos por meio de uma atividade lúdica, enfatizando sempre a necessidade da lavação das mãos antes e depois de irem ao banheiro. Com essa atividade foi possível sensibilizar os estudantes sobre o cuidado com a higiene pessoal, bem como a importância do saneamento básico no nosso dia a dia

    Growth, development, and phenotypic spectrum of individuals with deletions of 2q33.1 involving SATB2

    SATB2-Associated syndrome (SAS) is an autosomal dominant, multisystemic, neurodevelopmental disorder due to alterations in SATB2 at 2q33.1. A limited number of individuals with 2q33.1 contiguous deletions encompassing SATB2 (ΔSAS) have been described in the literature. We describe 17 additional individuals with ΔSAS, review the phenotype of 33 previously published individuals with 2q33.1 deletions (n = 50, mean age = 8.5 ± 7.8 years), and provide a comprehensive comparison to individuals with other molecular mechanisms that result in SAS (non-ΔSAS). Individuals in the ΔSAS group were often underweight for age (20/41 = 49%) with a progressive decline in weight (95% CI = −2.3 to −1.1, p \u3c 0.0001) and height (95% CI = −2.3 to −1.0, p \u3c 0.0001) Z-score means from birth to last available measurement. ΔSAS individuals were often noted to have a broad spectrum of facial dysmorphism. A composite image of ΔSAS individuals generated by automated image analysis was distinct as compared to matched controls and non-ΔSAS individuals. We also present additional genotype–phenotype correlations for individuals in the ΔSAS group such as an increased risk for aortic root/ascending aorta dilation and primary pulmonary hypertension for those individuals with contiguous gene deletions that include COL3A1/COL5A2 and BMPR2, respectively. Based on these findings, we provide additional care recommendations for individuals with ΔSAS variants

    Genotype-Phenotype Correlation in NF1: Evidence for a More Severe Phenotype Associated with Missense Mutations Affecting NF1 Codons 844–848

    Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a common genetic disorder with a birth incidence of 1:2,000–3,000, is characterized by a highly variable clinical presentation. To date, only two clinically relevant intragenic genotype-phenotype correlations have been reported for NF1 missense mutations affecting p.Arg1809 and a single amino acid deletion p.Met922del. Both variants predispose to a distinct mild NF1 phenotype with neither externally visible cutaneous/plexiform neurofibromas nor other tumors. Here, we report 162 individuals (129 unrelated probands and 33 affected relatives) heterozygous for a constitutional missense mutation affecting one of five neighboring NF1 codons—Leu844, Cys845, Ala846, Leu847, and Gly848—located in the cysteine-serine-rich domain (CSRD). Collectively, these recurrent missense mutations affect ∼0.8% of unrelated NF1 mutation-positive probands in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) cohort. Major superficial plexiform neurofibromas and symptomatic spinal neurofibromas were more prevalent in these individuals compared with classic NF1-affected cohorts (both p < 0.0001). Nearly half of the individuals had symptomatic or asymptomatic optic pathway gliomas and/or skeletal abnormalities. Additionally, variants in this region seem to confer a high predisposition to develop malignancies compared with the general NF1-affected population (p = 0.0061). Our results demonstrate that these NF1 missense mutations, although located outside the GAP-related domain, may be an important risk factor for a severe presentation. A genotype-phenotype correlation at the NF1 region 844–848 exists and will be valuable in the management and genetic counseling of a significant number of individuals

    Nightside condensation of iron in an ultra-hot giant exoplanet

    Ultra-hot giant exoplanets receive thousands of times Earth's insolation. Their high-temperature atmospheres (>2,000 K) are ideal laboratories for studying extreme planetary climates and chemistry. Daysides are predicted to be cloud-free, dominated by atomic species and substantially hotter than nightsides. Atoms are expected to recombine into molecules over the nightside, resulting in different day-night chemistry. While metallic elements and a large temperature contrast have been observed, no chemical gradient has been measured across the surface of such an exoplanet. Different atmospheric chemistry between the day-to-night ("evening") and night-to-day ("morning") terminators could, however, be revealed as an asymmetric absorption signature during transit. Here, we report the detection of an asymmetric atmospheric signature in the ultra-hot exoplanet WASP-76b. We spectrally and temporally resolve this signature thanks to the combination of high-dispersion spectroscopy with a large photon-collecting area. The absorption signal, attributed to neutral iron, is blueshifted by -11+/-0.7 km s-1 on the trailing limb, which can be explained by a combination of planetary rotation and wind blowing from the hot dayside. In contrast, no signal arises from the nightside close to the morning terminator, showing that atomic iron is not absorbing starlight there.     Racial differences in systemic sclerosis disease presentation: a European Scleroderma Trials and Research group study

    Objectives. Racial factors play a significant role in SSc. We evaluated differences in SSc presentations between white patients (WP), Asian patients (AP) and black patients (BP) and analysed the effects of geographical locations.Methods. SSc characteristics of patients from the EUSTAR cohort were cross-sectionally compared across racial groups using survival and multiple logistic regression analyses.Results. The study included 9162 WP, 341 AP and 181 BP. AP developed the first non-RP feature faster than WP but slower than BP. AP were less frequently anti-centromere (ACA; odds ratio (OR) = 0.4, P &lt; 0.001) and more frequently anti-topoisomerase-I autoantibodies (ATA) positive (OR = 1.2, P = 0.068), while BP were less likely to be ACA and ATA positive than were WP [OR(ACA) = 0.3, P &lt; 0.001; OR(ATA) = 0.5, P = 0.020]. AP had less often (OR = 0.7, P = 0.06) and BP more often (OR = 2.7, P &lt; 0.001) diffuse skin involvement than had WP.AP and BP were more likely to have pulmonary hypertension [OR(AP) = 2.6, P &lt; 0.001; OR(BP) = 2.7, P = 0.03 vs WP] and a reduced forced vital capacity [OR(AP) = 2.5, P &lt; 0.001; OR(BP) = 2.4, P &lt; 0.004] than were WP. AP more often had an impaired diffusing capacity of the lung than had BP and WP [OR(AP vs BP) = 1.9, P = 0.038; OR(AP vs WP) = 2.4, P &lt; 0.001]. After RP onset, AP and BP had a higher hazard to die than had WP [hazard ratio (HR) (AP) = 1.6, P = 0.011; HR(BP) = 2.1, P &lt; 0.001].Conclusion. Compared with WP, and mostly independent of geographical location, AP have a faster and earlier disease onset with high prevalences of ATA, pulmonary hypertension and forced vital capacity impairment and higher mortality. BP had the fastest disease onset, a high prevalence of diffuse skin involvement and nominally the highest mortality

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
