    Ethnodance and Identity: Black students Representing Science Identities in the Making

    We explored how arts-based practices, specifically what we define as ethnodance informs the study of science identity. We present a theoretical argument supported by an empirical illustration of how ethnodance offers Black youth with dance identities a medium to narrate evolving science identities, communicating meanings, interactions, and emotions, and to construct identities further as reified artifacts of participating in science classroom communities. The theoretical argument frames dance as an embodied narrative, identity construction as an ongoing process with interactional and affective commitments, and Black Dances as venues of Black bodies’ expressivity of the brilliance, competence, and creativity of Black people. The empirical illustration focuses on Black students in an urban high school choreographing a dance performance to capture their science identity construction transitioning from biology and moving through physics. The students’ semiotic choices communicated the experienced (dis)connection between self and science; ballet, lyrical, and contemporary dances represented experiences challenging their position within science, and a Black Dance, majorette, experiences affirming their place or creating a bridge. Majorette offered students a sense of cultural solidarity, symbolic of their collective overcoming of obstacles faced, frustration, and alienation felt at the beginning of physics, and joy of rising above the struggle

    Content learning and identity construction (CLIC): a framework to strengthen African American students’ mathematics and science learning in urban elementary schools

    We present a theoretical framework that views learning as a process involving content learning (CL) and identity construction (IC). We view identities as lenses through which people make sense of, and position themselves, through stories and actions, and as lenses for understanding how they are positioned by others. As people become more (or less) central members of a disciplinary community (e.g., a science or mathematics classroom) and engage (or not) in various cultural practices, changes in identity and knowledge accompany changes in position and status. Identity construction (IC) and content learning (CL) share an important characteristic: they both involve meaning making. For IC, it is the development of reasoned, coordinated, coherent, and meaningful ways of seeing one’s self in relation to communities, and for CL, it centers on the development of disciplinary concepts, processes, tools, language, discourse, and norms within practices. Focusing on Black students in mathematics and science classrooms, we claim that three intersecting identities are particularly important: disciplinary identity (as doers of the discipline, i.e., mathematics and science), racial identity (emerging understandings of what it means to be Black), and academic identity (as participants in academic tasks and classroom practices). In this paper, we elaborate on the CLIC framework as a useful tool for understanding how Black students negotiate participation in, and come to see themselves as doers of science and mathematics in their school classrooms. We synthesize empirical findings from our research with younger and older students, as well as with parents and community members, to illustrate dimensions of this framework

    Mestrado em Estudos InglesesA adopção da Comunicação Não Verbal como uma estratégia narrativa usada pela escritora irlandesa Edna O’Brien na trilogia The House of Splendid Isolation (1994), Down by the River (1996) e Wild Decembers (1999) constituiu o ponto de partida para a elaboração da presente dissertação. As áreas da Comunicação Não Verbal como a linguagem cinestésica ou a proxémica (a percepção do espaço e o uso que dele fazemos) revelaram-se pertinentes para a análise da referida trilogia. É, igualmente, objectivo deste trabalho problematizar algumas questões que se prendem com a expressão da voz e da experiência no feminino. O corpo, portador de significação, deve ser lido como um texto que oferece uma multiplicidade de leituras e de diferentes perspectivas. Neste contexto, a expressão da voz e da experiência feminina passa necessariamente pela linguagem corporal, assumindo-se como uma alternativa ao discurso patriarcal. A exploração das potencialidades que o corpo oferece como portador de significado e como elemento de ruptura do discurso dominante será também motivo de análise e de discussão neste trabalho. ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this work is to analyse the trilogy, The House of Splendid Isolation (1994), Down by the River (1996) and Wild Decembers (1999) by the Irish writer Edna O’Brien, highlighting the role of Non Verbal Communication as a narrative strategy which reveals women’s voice and experience. It will also be discussed how body language and proxemics are cunnily used by O’Brien as means to convey the idea that women have a discourse of their own which assumes itself as an alternative to the patriarchal one. The body portrays meaning and it should be read as a meaningful text. The multiplicity of readings and perspectives that are offered are quite interesting and enriching. This dissertation will basically offer personal readings of the above trilogy as well as an opportunity to discuss the potentialities of body language as a way of asserting women’s identity and self expression

    Evasion of anti-growth signaling: a key step in tumorigenesis and potential target for treatment and prophylaxis by natural compounds

    The evasion of anti-growth signaling is an important characteristic of cancer cells. In order to continue to proliferate, cancer cells must somehow uncouple themselves from the many signals that exist to slow down cell growth. Here, we define the anti-growth signaling process, and review several important pathways involved in growth signaling: p53, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), retinoblastoma protein (Rb), Hippo, growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), AT-rich interactive domain 1A (ARID1A), Notch, insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) pathways. Aberrations in these processes in cancer cells involve mutations and thus the suppression of genes that prevent growth, as well as mutation and activation of genes involved in driving cell growth. Using these pathways as examples, we prioritize molecular targets that might be leveraged to promote anti-growth signaling in cancer cells. Interestingly, naturally-occurring phytochemicals found in human diets (either singly or as mixtures) may promote anti-growth signaling, and do so without the potentially adverse effects associated with synthetic chemicals. We review examples of naturally-occurring phytochemicals that may be applied to prevent cancer by antagonizing growth signaling, and propose one phytochemical for each pathway. These are: epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) for the Rb pathway, luteolin for p53, curcumin for PTEN, porphyrins for Hippo, genistein for GDF15, resveratrol for ARID1A, withaferin A for Notch and diguelin for the IGF1-receptor pathway. The coordination of anti-growth signaling and natural compound studies will provide insight into the future application of these compounds in the clinical setting

    Genetic prediction of ICU hospitalization and mortality in COVID-19 patients using artificial neural networks

    There is an unmet need of models for early prediction of morbidity and mortality of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). We aimed to a) identify complement-related genetic variants associated with the clinical outcomes of ICU hospitalization and death, b) develop an artificial neural network (ANN) predicting these outcomes and c) validate whether complement-related variants are associated with an impaired complement phenotype. We prospectively recruited consecutive adult patients of Caucasian origin, hospitalized due to COVID-19. Through targeted next-generation sequencing, we identified variants in complement factor H/CFH, CFB, CFH-related, CFD, CD55, C3, C5, CFI, CD46, thrombomodulin/THBD, and A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS13). Among 381 variants in 133 patients, we identified 5 critical variants associated with severe COVID-19: rs2547438 (C3), rs2250656 (C3), rs1042580 (THBD), rs800292 (CFH) and rs414628 (CFHR1). Using age, gender and presence or absence of each variant, we developed an ANN predicting morbidity and mortality in 89.47% of the examined population. Furthermore, THBD and C3a levels were significantly increased in severe COVID-19 patients and those harbouring relevant variants. Thus, we reveal for the first time an ANN accurately predicting ICU hospitalization and death in COVID-19 patients, based on genetic variants in complement genes, age and gender.     Constraints on the χ_(c1) versus χ_(c2) polarizations in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

    The polarizations of promptly produced χ_(c1) and χ_(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV. The χ_c states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χ_c → J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e⁺e⁻, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χ_(c2) to χ_(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ → μ⁺μ⁻ decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions.
