A hierarchy of Ramsey-like cardinals

We introduce a hierarchy of large cardinals between weakly compact and measurable cardinals, that is closely related to the Ramsey-like cardinals introduced by Victoria Gitman, and is based on certain infinite filter games, however also has a range of equivalent characterizations in terms of elementary embeddings. The aim of this paper is to locate the Ramsey-like cardinals studied by Gitman, and other well-known large cardinal notions, in this hierarchy

Forcing lightface definable well-orders without the CGH

For any given uncountable cardinal $\kappa$ with $\kappa^{{<}\kappa}=\kappa$, we present a forcing that is $<\kappa$-directed closed, has the $\kappa^+$-c.c. and introduces a lightface definable well-order of $H(\kappa^+)$. We use this to define a global iteration that does this for all such $\kappa$ simultaneously and is capable of preserving the existence of many large cardinals in the universe

Characterizations of pretameness and the Ord-cc

It is well known that pretameness implies the forcing theorem, and that pretameness is characterized by the preservation of the axioms of $\mathsf{ZF}^-$, that is $\mathsf{ZF}$ without the power set axiom, or equivalently, by the preservation of the axiom scheme of replacement, for class forcing over models of $\mathsf{ZF}$. We show that pretameness in fact has various other characterizations, for instance in terms of the forcing theorem, the preservation of the axiom scheme of separation, the forcing equivalence of partial orders and their dense suborders, and the existence of nice names for sets of ordinals. These results show that pretameness is a strong dividing line between well and badly behaved notions of class forcing, and that it is exactly the right notion to consider in applications of class forcing. Furthermore, for most properties under consideration, we also present a corresponding characterization of the $\mathrm{Ord}$-chain condition

Ultrasonic Songs of Male Mice

Previously it was shown that male mice, when they encounter female mice or their pheromones, emit ultrasonic vocalizations with frequencies ranging over 30–110 kHz. Here, we show that these vocalizations have the characteristics of song, consisting of several different syllable types, whose temporal sequencing includes the utterance of repeated phrases. Individual males produce songs with characteristic syllabic and temporal structure. This study provides a quantitative initial description of male mouse songs, and opens the possibility of studying song production and perception in an established genetic model organism

PUTUSAN MAHKAMAH KONSTITUSI NO. 56/PUU-XVII/2019 TENTANG NORMA HAK MENCALONKAN DIRI DALAM PILKADA BAGI MANTAN TERPIDANA DITINJAU DARI ASPEK PEMIDANAAN

Adalah hak setiap warga negara mendapatkan hak politiknya sesuai yang diamanatkan oleh Konstitusi kita, dan pesta demokrasi pemilihan umum kepala daerah merupakan salah satu moment penting dalam pelaksanaan hak politik tersebut karena pada saat itulah seluruh warga negara di daerah pemilihan menjalankan hak memilih dan hak dipilihnya. Namun menjadi menarik ketika Mahkamah Konstitusi No 56/PUU-XVII/2019 menyatakan adanya rentang waktu tunggu selama 5 tahun bagi mantan terpidana untuk ikut konstentasi tersebut.  Tulisan ini berupaya membahas putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi No 56/PUU-XVII/2019 dari sisi pidana utamanya berkaitan dengan tujuan pemidanaan. Penulisan ini ini mengunakan metode penelitian yuridis normatif dengan menganalisis putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi  dan perundang-undangan  yang berkaitan dengan hak politik mantan terpidana dalam mengikuti pilkada,  kemudian dianalisis dengan pendapat-pendapat para ahli hukum atau doktrin, serta peraturan perundang-undangan yang berkaitan dengan isu hukum yang dibahas dan diambil kesimpulan.Konsekuensi Hukum  Putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi  No 56/PUU-XVII/2019 tentang Norma Hak Politik Mantan Terpidana adalah, mantan terpidana yang akan mengikuti konstentasi pemilihan kepala daerah harus telah melewati jangka waktu 5 (lima) tahun setelah mantan terpidana selesai menjalani pidana penjara berdasarkan putusan pengadilan yang telah mempunyai kekuatan hukum tetap dan secara jujur atau terbuka mengumumkan mengenai latar belakang jati dirinya sebagai mantan terpidana. Putusan tentang rentang waktu tunggu selama 5 (lima) tahun bagi mantan terpidana setelah melaksanakan hukuman pidana, pada dasarnya tidak selaras dengan konsep pemidanaan saat ini dan dengan sistem pemasyarakatan berdasarkan UU No. 12 Tahun 1995 tentang Sistem Pemasyarakatan, yang bertujuan membentuk warga binaan/terpidana menjadi warga negara yang baik yang sama derajat, hak, kewajiban  dan perilakunya dengan warga negara lain

Kindliness, Like the Forest Tree

The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in their Oregon Province observed the centenary of their founding in 1959. Mother Mary Mark, Provincial Superior, was asked to address the physicians to whom the Community owes a full measure of gratitude for medical care given to the Sisters during the many years of their labors in the Northwest. Her expression of thanks is recorded here as an echo of the sentiments of others who cherish the solicitude of physicians for those who come to them in need
