Contrasting stress fields on correlating margins of the South Atlantic
The “passiveness” of passive continental margins across the globe is currently under debate since several studies have shown that these margins may experience a variety of stress states and undergo significant vertical movement post-breakup. Of special interest is the South Atlantic, because the bounding continents have very different recent geological histories, with Africa experiencing continental rifting whereas South America is influenced by subduction on the Pacific side. It is not clear to what extent the Atlantic continental margins are subject to the same stresses and vertical motions as the main continents. To address this problem, we performed a paleostress analysis of two originally adjacent areas, i.e. NW Namibia and SE/S Brazil. Both areas are covered by the ~ 133-Ma-old Paraná-Etendeka extrusives that were emplaced shortly before or during the onset of the Atlantic rifting. Thus, the volcanics serve as a time marker for syn- or post-rift deformation. Collected fault slip data in the volcanics reveal remarkable differences between the two correlating areas. NW Namibia was dominated by extension in ENE-WSW and SW-NE directions, and by minor strike-slip movement with NW-SE directed compression. SE/S Brazil was mostly affected by strike-slip faulting, with compression oriented E-W and SW-NE. Similar fault systems appear widespread across SE Brazil and may be the combined result of flexural margin bending and the Nazca plate subduction. The results of NW Namibia differ from known compressional stress tensors in western South Africa, post-dating 90 Ma. The south-western African continental margin may thus have experienced a spatially variable stress history. Our results show that the tectonic evolution of the continental margins of the South Atlantic is not passive and that both margins vary significantly in structural style and stress fields, indicating that variable plate boundary forces play a major role in margin evolution

Cenozoic-Recent tectonics and uplift in the Greater Caucasus: a perspective from Azerbaijan
The Greater Caucasus is Europe's highest mountain belt and results from the inversion of the Greater Caucasus back-arc-type basin due to the collision of Arabia and Eurasia. The orogenic processes that led to the present mountain chain started in the Early Cenozoic, accelerated during the Plio-Pleistocene, and are still active as shown from present GPS studies and earthquake distribution. The Greater Caucasus is a doubly verging fold-and-thrust belt, with a pro- and a retro wedge actively propagating into the foreland sedimentary basin of the Kura to the south and the Terek to the north, respectively. Based on tectonic geomorphology – active and abandoned thrust fronts – the mountain range can be subdivided into several zones with different uplift amounts and rates with very heterogeneous strain partitioning. The central part of the mountain range – defined by the Main Caucasus Thrust to the south and backthrusts to the north – forms a triangular-shape zone showing the highest uplift and fastest rates, and is due to thrusting over a steep tectonic ramp system at depth. The meridional orogenic in front of the Greater Caucasus in Azerbaijan lies at the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, to the south of the Kura foreland basin
Safety and Efficacy of Itraconazole Compared to Amphotericin B as Empirical Antifungal Therapy for Neutropenic Fever in Patients with Haematological Malignancy
Safety, tolerability and efficacy of itraconazole and amphotericin B (AMB) were compared for empirical antifungal treatment of febrile neutropenic cancer patients. Patients and Methods: In an open, randomised study, 162 patients with at least 72 h of antimicrobial treatment received either intravenous followed by oral itraconazole suspension or intravenous AMB for a maximum of 28 days. Permanent discontinuation of study medication due to any adverse event was the primary safety parameter. Efficacy parameters included response and success rate for both treatment groups. Results: Significantly fewer itraconazole patients discontinued treatment due to any adverse event (22.2 vs. 56.8% AMB; p < 0.0001). The main reason for discontinuation was a rise in serum creatinine (1.2% itraconazole vs. 23.5% AMB). Renal toxicity was significantly higher and more drug-related adverse events occurred in the AMB group. Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis showed favourable efficacy for itraconazole: response and success rate were both significantly higher than for AMB (61.7 vs. 42% and 70.4 vs. 49.3%, both p < 0.0001). Treatment failure was markedly reduced in itraconazole patients (25.9 vs. 43.2%), largely due to the better tolerability. Conclusions: Itraconazole was tolerated significantly better than conventional AMB and also showed advantages regarding efficacy. This study confirms the role of itraconazole as a useful and safe agent in empirical antifungal therapy of febrile neutropenic cancer patients. </p
Cosmic rays from Galactic pulsars
We calculate energy spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays accelerated
by the galactic population of pulsars during their radio and gamma-ray phase.
Several models proposed for the distribution of the initial parameters of the
galactic pulsar population are considered. The best description of the observed
cosmic ray spectrum and mass composition between 10^15 eV and 10^18 eV is
obtained for the model B of Lorimer et al. (1993) in which the logs of initial
pulsar periods and surface magnetic fields are given by the Gaussian
distributions with the average values of log P[ms] = 2.6 and log B[G] = 12.3,
respectively.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, A&A accepte
On the knee in the energy spectrum of cosmic rays
The knee in the all-particle energy spectrum is scrutinized with a
phenomenological model, named poly-gonato model, linking results from direct
and indirect measurements. For this purpose, recent results from direct and
indirect measurements of cosmic rays in the energy range from 10 GeV up to 1
EeV are examined. The energy spectra of individual elements, as obtained by
direct observations, are extrapolated to high energies using power laws and
compared to all-particle spectra from air shower measurements. A cut-off for
each element proportional to its charge Z is assumed. The model describes the
knee in the all-particle energy spectrum as a result of subsequent cut-offs for
individual elements, starting with the proton component at 4.5 PeV, and the
second change of the spectral index around 0.4 EeV as due to the end of stable
elements (Z=92). The mass composition, extrapolated from direct measurements to
high energies, using the poly-gonato model, is compatible with results from air
shower experiments measuring the electromagnetic, muonic, and hadronic
components. But it disagrees with the mass composition derived from X_max
measurements using Cerenkov and fluorescence light detectors.Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, 9 tables, accepted by Astroparticle Physic
Multiple thermochronometers applied to the quantitative analysis of compressive systems: The southern sub-Andean fold and thrust belt of Bolivia: From source rock to trap
The evolution of fold and thrust belts requires time data restrictions to determine the rates related to the interaction of surface and subsurface processes and to quantify the time relationship between the components of the petroleum system: reservoir, seal, source rock and trap. The sub-Andean fold-and-thrust belt in the Bolivian territory in general, and the regional transect that links the structures of Curuyuqui-Carohuaicho-Tatarenda-Borebigua-Charagua and Mandeyapecua in particular, constitutes a complex multi-variable system in which the definition of time-Temperature (t-T) trajectories has led to new suitable structural and stratigraphic conclusions. The integration of multiple thermochronological-geochronological systems (Apatite Fission Track, Apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He and UPb SHRIMP on zircon) and the existing surface and subsurface geological constraints made it possible to develop a chrono-kinematic characterization of fault-related anticlines, defining their formation chronology, structural growth rate and link between them in the study area. Furthermore, it was also possible to perform a quantitative analysis of the subsidence-burial and exhumation-erosion phenomena that occurred from the deposition of Silurian-Devonian source rocks to the present time, providing relevant determinations to the modeling of the Oil & Gas system.Fil: Hernandez, Juan I.. Measurements of the Cosmic Ray Composition with Air Shower Experiments
In this paper we review air shower data related to the mass composition of
cosmic rays above 10 eV. After explaining the basic relations between
air shower observables and the primary mass and energy of cosmic rays, we
present different approaches and results of composition studies with surface
detectors. Furthermore, we discuss measurements of the longitudinal development
of air showers from non-imaging Cherenkov detectors and fluorescence
telescopes. The interpretation of these experimental results in terms of
primary mass is highly susceptible to the theoretical uncertainties of hadronic
interactions in air showers. We nevertheless attempt to calculate the
logarithmic mass from the data using different hadronic interaction models and
to study its energy dependence from 10 to 10 eV.Comment: 21 pages, invited review accepted for publication in Astroparticle

KASCADE measurements of energy spectra for elemental groups of cosmic rays: Results and open problems
A composition analysis of KASCADE air shower data is performed by means of
unfolding the two-dimensional frequency spectrum of electron and muon numbers.
Aim of the analysis is the determination of energy spectra for elemental groups
representing the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays. Since such an
analysis depends crucially on simulations of air showers the two different
hadronic interaction models QGSJet and SIBYLL are used for their generation.
The resulting primary energy spectra show that the knee in the all particle
spectrum is due to a steepening of the spectra of light elements but, also,
that neither of the two simulation sets is able to describe the measured data
consistently over the whole energy range with discrepancies appearing in
different energy regions.Comment: 39 pages, accepted for publication in Astropart. Phy
