Compensation of atmospheric disturbances in differential interferometry by adoption of high resolution weather models
Differential interferometric SAR is a popular remote sensing technique to monitor deformations of the earth surface. However, the atmosphere disturbs interferograms and therefore affects the deformation estimate. Numerical weather predictions are able to hindcast the atmospheric states during SAR acquisitions which are mapped into disturbance estimates. This estimates are subtracted from interferograms to reduce the perturbation and improve the starting conditions for time series analysis
A reservoir trap for antiprotons
We have developed techniques to extract arbitrary fractions of antiprotons
from an accumulated reservoir, and to inject them into a Penning-trap system
for high-precision measurements. In our trap-system antiproton storage times >
1.08 years are estimated. The device is fail-safe against power-cuts of up to
10 hours. This makes our planned comparisons of the fundamental properties of
protons and antiprotons independent from accelerator cycles, and will enable us
to perform experiments during long accelerator shutdown periods when background
magnetic noise is low. The demonstrated scheme has the potential to be applied

Radar Path Delay Effects in Volcanic Gas Plumes: The Case of Láscar Volcano, Northern Chile
Modern volcano monitoring commonly involves Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurements to identify ground motions caused by volcanic activity. However, InSAR is largely affected by changes in atmospheric refractivity, in particular by changes which can be attributed to the distribution of water (H2O) vapor in the atmospheric column. Gas emissions from continuously degassing volcanoes contain abundant water vapor and thus produce variations in the atmospheric water vapor content above and downwind of the volcano, which are notably well captured by short-wavelength X-band SAR systems. These variations may in turn cause differential phase errors in volcano deformation estimates due to excess radar path delay effects within the volcanic gas plume. Inversely, if these radar path delay effects are better understood, they may be even used for monitoring degassing activity, by means of the precipitable water vapor (PWV) content in the plume at the time of SAR acquisitions, which may provide essential information on gas plume dispersion and the state of volcanic and hydrothermal activity. In this work we investigate the radar path delays that were generated by water vapor contained in the volcanic gas plume of the persistently degassing Láscar volcano, which is located in the dry Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. We estimate water vapor contents based on sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission measurements from a scanning UV spectrometer (Mini-DOAS) station installed at Láscar volcano, which were scaled by H2O/SO2 molar mixing ratios obtained during a multi-component Gas Analyzer System (Multi-GAS) survey on the crater rim of the volcano. To calculate the water vapor content in the downwind portion of the plume, where an increase of water vapor is expected, we further applied a correction involving estimation of potential evaporation rates of water droplets governed by turbulent mixing of the condensed volcanic plume with the dry atmosphere. Based on these estimates we obtain daily average PWV contents inside the volcanic gas plume of 0.2–2.5 mm equivalent water column, which translates to a slant wet delay (SWD) in DInSAR data of 1.6–20 mm. We used these estimates in combination with our high resolution TerraSAR-X DInSAR observations at Láscar volcano, in order to demonstrate the occurrence of repeated atmospheric delay patterns that were generated by volcanic gas emissions. We show that gas plume related refractivity changes are significant and detectable in DInSAR measurements. Implications are two-fold: X-band satellite radar observations also contain information on the degassing state of a volcano, while deformation signals need to be interpreted with care, which has relevance for volcano observations at Láscar and for other sites worldwide

Brasil.Background: The anti-HCV antibody response has not been well characterized during the early phase of HCV
infection and little is known about its relationship to the clinical course during this period.
Methods: We analyzed serial anti-HCV antibodies longitudinally obtained from a prospective cohort of 65 patients
with acute HCV infection by using a microparticle enzyme immunoassay AxSYM HCV 3.0 (Abbott Diagnostics)
during the first 12 months from HCV acquisition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Spontaneous viral clearance (SVC) was
defined as undetectable HCV RNA in serum, in the absence of treatment, for three consecutive HCV PCR tests
within 12-months of follow-up.
Results: Baseline antibody values were similar among patient groups with self-limiting HCV evolution (n = 34) and
persistent viremia (n = 31) [median (interquartile range) signal/cut-off ratio (s/co) 78.7 (60.7-93.8) vs. 93.9 (67.8-
111.9), p = 0.26]. During 12-months follow-up, patients with acute spontaneous resolving HCV infection showed
significantly lower serial antibody response in comparison to individuals progressing to chronic infection [median
(interquartile range) s/co 62.7 (35.2-85.0) vs. 98.4 (70.4-127.4), p < 0.0001]. In addition, patients with self-limiting HCV
evolution exhibited an expeditious, sharp decline of serial antibody values after SVC in comparison to those
measured before SVC [median (interquartile range) s/co 56.0 (25.4-79.3) vs. 79.4 (66.3-103.0), p < 0.0001].
Conclusion: Our findings indicate a rapid short-term decline of antibody values in patients with acute
spontaneous resolving HCV infection
The use of fasting vs. non-fasting triglyceride concentration for estimating the prevalence of high LDL-cholesterol and metabolic syndrome in population surveys
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>For practical reasons it is not easy to obtain fasting samples in large population health surveys. Non-fasting triglyceride (Tg) values are difficult to interpret. The authors compared the accuracy of statistically corrected non-fasting Tg values with true fasting values and estimated the misclassification of subjects with high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and the metabolic syndrome.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Non-fasting blood was obtained from a population-based sample of 4282 individuals aged 24-75 years in the National FINRISK 2007 Study. Fasting blood samples were drawn from the same persons 3 months later. Non-fasting serum Tg values were converted into fasting values using previously published formula. LDL-C was calculated and classification of the metabolic syndrome was carried out according to three different latest guidelines.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The median (25<sup>th</sup>, 75th percentile) non-fasting serum Tg concentration was 1.18 (0.87, 1.72) mmol/L and after postprandial correction 1.06 (0.78, 1.52) mmol/L. The true-fasting serum Tg concentration was 1.00 (0.75, 1.38) mmol/L (<it>P </it>< 0.001) vs. non-fasting and corrected value. Bias of the corrected value was +5.9% compared with the true-fasting Tg. Of the true fasting subjects, 56.4% had LDL-C ≥3.00 mmol/L. When calculated using non-fasting serum Tg, the prevalence of high LDL-C was 51.3% and using statistically corrected Tg it was 54.8%. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 35.5% among fully fasted persons and among non-fasting subjects 39.7%, which after statistical correction of Tg decreased to 37.6% (P < 0.001 for all comparisons).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Correction of non-fasting serum Tg to fasting values plays a minor role in population studies but nevertheless reduces misclassification of calculated high LDL-C from 5.1 to 1.6% and the metabolic syndrome from 4.2 to 2.1%.</p
Outcome Prediction in Patients with Severe COVID-19 Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation—A Retrospective International Multicenter Study
The role of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy (V-V ECMO) in
severe COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is still under debate and conclusive
data from large cohorts are scarce. Furthermore, criteria for the selection of patients that benefit most
from this highly invasive and resource-demanding therapy are yet to be defined. In this study, we
assess survival in an international multicenter cohort of COVID-19 patients treated with V-V ECMO
and evaluate the performance of several clinical scores to predict 30-day survival. Methods: This is
an investigator-initiated retrospective non-interventional international multicenter registry study
(NCT04405973, first registered 28 May 2020). In 127 patients treated with V-V ECMO at 15 centers in
Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, and the United States, we calculated the Sequential Organ
Failure Assessment (SOFA) Score, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II), Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) Score, Respiratory Extracorporeal Membrane
Oxygenation Survival Prediction (RESP) Score, Predicting Death for Severe ARDS on V-V ECMO
(PRESERVE) Score, and 30-day survival. Results: In our study cohort which enrolled 127 patients,
overall 30-day survival was 54%. Median SOFA, SAPS II, APACHE II, RESP, and PRESERVE were 9,
36, 17, 1, and 4, respectively. The prognostic accuracy for all these scores (area under the receiver
operating characteristic—AUROC) ranged between 0.548 and 0.605. Conclusions: The use of scores
for the prediction of mortality cannot be recommended for treatment decisions in severe COVID-19
ARDS undergoing V-V ECMO; nevertheless, scoring results below or above a specific cut-off value
may be considered as an additional tool in the evaluation of prognosis. Survival rates in this cohort of
COVID-19 patients treated with V-V ECMO were slightly lower than those reported in non-COVID-19
ARDS patients treated with V-V ECMO

Immunization of mice with the nef gene from Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1: Study of immunological memory and long-term toxicology
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) regulatory protein, Nef, is an attractive vaccine target because it is involved in viral pathogenesis, is expressed early in the viral life cycle and harbors many T and B cell epitopes. Several clinical trials include gene-based vaccines encoding this protein. However, Nef has been shown to transform certain cell types <it>in vitro</it>. Based on these findings we performed a long-term toxicity and immunogenicity study of Nef, encoded either by Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara or by plasmid DNA. BALB/c mice were primed twice with either DNA or MVA encoding Nef and received a homologous or heterologous boost ten months later. In the meantime, the Nef-specific immune responses were monitored and at the time of sacrifice an extensive toxicological evaluation was performed, where presence of tumors and other pathological changes were assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The toxicological evaluation showed that immunization with MVAnef is safe and does not cause cellular transformation or other toxicity in somatic organs.</p> <p>Both DNAnef and MVAnef immunized animals developed potent Nef-specific cellular responses that declined to undetectable levels over time, and could readily be boosted after almost one year. This is of particular interest since it shows that plasmid DNA vaccine can also be used as a potent late booster of primed immune responses. We observed qualitative differences between the T cell responses induced by the two different vectors: DNA-encoded nef induced long-lasting CD8<sup>+ </sup>T cell memory responses, whereas MVA-encoded nef induced CD4<sup>+ </sup>T cell memory responses. In terms of the humoral immune responses, we show that two injections of MVAnef induce significant anti-Nef titers, while repeated injections of DNAnef do not. A single boost with MVAnef could enhance the antibody response following DNAnef prime to the same level as that observed in animals immunized repeatedly with MVAnef. We also demonstrate the possibility to boost HIV-1 Nef-specific immune responses using the MVAnef construct despite the presence of potent anti-vector immunity.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study shows that the nef gene vectored by MVA does not induce malignancies or other adverse effects in mice. Further, we show that when the nef gene is delivered by plasmid or by a viral vector, it elicits potent and long-lasting immune responses and that these responses can be directed towards a CD4<sup>+ </sup>or a CD8<sup>+ </sup>T cell response depending on the choice of vector.</p

Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis
Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV
Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
