    Peasant settlers and the ‘civilizing mission’ in Russian Turkestan, 1865-1917

    This article provides an introduction to one of the lesser-known examples of European settler colonialism, the settlement of European (mainly Russian and Ukrainian) peasants in Southern Central Asia (Turkestan) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It establishes the legal background and demographic impact of peasant settlement, and the role played by the state in organising and encouraging it. It explores official attitudes towards the settlers (which were often very negative), and their relations with the local Kazakh and Kyrgyz population. The article adopts a comparative framework, looking at Turkestan alongside Algeria and Southern Africa, and seeking to establish whether paradigms developed in the study of other settler societies (such as the ‘poor white’) are of any relevance in understanding Slavic peasant settlement in Turkestan. It concludes that there are many close parallels with European settlement in other regions with large indigenous populations, but that racial ideology played a much less important role in the Russian case compared to religious divisions and fears of cultural backsliding. This did not prevent relations between settlers and the ‘native’ population deteriorating markedly in the years before the First World War, resulting in large-scale rebellion in 1916

    MUSiC: a model-unspecific search for new physics in proton–proton collisions at √s=13TeV

    Results of the Model Unspecific Search in CMS (MUSiC), using proton–proton collision data recorded at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1, are presented. The MUSiC analysis searches for anomalies that could be signatures of physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is based on the comparison of observed data with the standard model prediction, as determined from simulation, in several hundred final states and multiple kinematic distributions. Events containing at least one electron or muon are classified based on their final state topology, and an automated search algorithm surveys the observed data for deviations from the prediction. The sensitivity of the search is validated using multiple methods. No significant deviations from the predictions have been observed. For a wide range of final state topologies, agreement is found between the data and the standard model simulation. This analysis complements dedicated search analyses by significantly expanding the range of final states covered using a model independent approach with the largest data set to date to probe phase space regions beyond the reach of previous general searches

    Measurement of prompt psi(2S) production cross sections in proton-lead and proton-proton collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV

    Measurements of prompt ψ(2S) meson production cross sections in proton-lead (pPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of √sNN = 5.02 TeV are reported. The results are based on pPb and pp data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 34.6 nb−1 and 28.0 pb−1, respectively. The nuclear modification factor RpPb is measured for prompt ψ(2S) in the transverse momentum range 4 < pT < 30 GeV/c and the center-of-mass rapidity range −2.4 < yCM < 1.93. The results on ψ(2S) RpPb are compared to the corresponding modification factor for prompt J/ψ mesons. The results point to different nuclear effects at play in the production of the excited charmonium state compared to the ground state, in the region of backward rapidity and for pT < 10 GeV/c. © 2019 The Author.     Study of the underlying event in top quark pair production in pp collisions at 13 TeV

    Measurements of normalized differential cross sections as functions of the multiplicity and kinematic variables of charged-particle tracks from the underlying event in top quark and antiquark pair production are presented. The measurements are performed in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13<, and are based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb(-1). Events containing one electron, one muon, and two jets from the hadronization and fragmentation of b quarks are used. These measurements characterize, for the first time, properties of the underlying event in top quark pair production and show no deviation from the universality hypothesis at energy scales typically above twice the top quark mass.Peer reviewe

    Measurement of the top quark Yukawa coupling from tt ̄ kinematic distributions in the dilepton final state in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV

    A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1, recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, Yt, is determined from kinematic distributions in tt ̄ final states containing ee, μμ, or eμ pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for tt ̄ production. In particular, the distributions of the mass of the tt ̄ system and the rapidity difference of the top quark and antiquark are sensitive to the value of Yt. The measurement yields a best fit value of Yt=1.16-0.35+0.24, bounding Yt&lt;1.54 at a 95% confidence level

    Measurement of exclusive rho(770)(0) photoproduction in ultraperipheral pPb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV

    Exclusive.(770) 0 photoproduction is measured for the first time in ultraperipheral pPb collisions at v s NN = 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector. The cross section s(.p..(770) 0 p) is 11.0 +/- 1.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) mu b at W. p = 92.6GeV for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies W. p between 29 and 213 GeV. The differential cross section ds/d| t| is measured in the interval 0.025 <| t| <1GeV 2 as a function of W. p, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The results are compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions. The measured cross section s(.p..(770) 0 p) has a power-law dependence on the photon-proton centre-of-mass, consistent with electron-proton collision measurements performed at HERA. The W. p dependence of the exponential slope of the differential cross section ds/d| t| is also measured.Peer reviewe
