    Battery-type column for caesium ions separation using electroactive film of copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles

    We reported a novel and compact battery-type column using nanoparticles film of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF NPs film) for sequential removal of Cs from wastewater. Different from the electrochemical deposition, chemical spray or chemical bath deposition, our film was prepared by coating water dispersed CuHCF NPs ink on the electrode surface through a simple wet process similar to ink printing. The battery-type column indicated Cs adsorption and desorption can be achieved by electrochemical redox of CuHCF NPs film, through switching the potentials between two sandwiched electrodes. Kinetic studies revealed both the static attraction and electrochemical oxidation-reduction of Fe (II/III) contributed to Cs separation. Insignificant change in the current after 100\ua0cycles of durability test indicated the CuHCF NPs film is relatively stable, suggesting the battery-type column has a long service life for Cs removal from wastewater

    <i>Salmonella</i> Flagellum

    Flagella-driven motility contributes to effective bacterial invasion. The bacterial flagellum of Salmonella enterica is a rotary motor powered by an electrochemical potential difference of protons across the cytoplasmic membrane. The flagellum is composed of several basal body rings and an axial structure consisting of the rod as a drive shaft, the hook as a universal joint and the filament as a helical propeller. The assembly of the axial structure begins with the rod, followed by the hook and finally the filament. A type III protein export apparatus is located at the flagellar base and transports flagellar axial proteins from the cytoplasm to the distal end of the growing flagellar structure where their assembly occurs. The protein export apparatus coordinates flagellar gene expression with assembly, allowing the hierarchy of flagellar gene expression to exactly parallel the flagellar assembly process. The basal body can accommodate a dozen stator complexes around a rotor ring complex in a load-dependent manner. Each stator unit conducts protons and pushes the rotor.     Novel mechanism of photoinduced reversible phase transitions in molecule-based magnets

    A novel microscopic mechanism of bi-directional structural changes is proposed for the photo-induced magnetic phase transition in Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues on the basis of ab initio quantum chemical cluster calculations. It is shown that the local potential energies of various spin states of Co are sensitive to the number of nearest neighbor Fe vacancies. As a result, the forward and backward structural changes are most readily initiated by excitation of different local regions by different photons. This mechanism suggests an effective strategy to realize photoinduced reversible phase transitions in a general system consisting of two local components.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex, 3 figures, to appear in Phys.     Sensation of presence and cybersickness in applications of virtual reality for advanced rehabilitation

    Around three years ago, in the special issue on augmented and virtual reality in rehabilitation, the topics of simulator sickness was briefly discussed in relation to vestibular rehabilitation. Simulator sickness with virtual reality applications have also been referred to as visually induced motion sickness or cybersickness. Recently, study on cybersickness has been reported in entertainment, training, game, and medical environment in several journals. Virtual stimuli can enlarge sensation of presence, but they sometimes also evoke unpleasant sensation. In order to safely apply augmented and virtual reality for long-term rehabilitation treatment, sensation of presence and cybersickness should be appropriately controlled. This issue presents the results of five studies conducted to evaluate visually-induced effects and speculate influences of virtual rehabilitation.     High-capacity and selective ammonium removal from water using sodium cobalt hexacyanoferrate

    A new NH4+adsorbent with high capacity and selectivity, sodium cobalt(II) hexacyanoferrate(II) ( NaCoHCF, NayCo (II) [Fe2+(CN)6]x$zH2O), was prepared. The adsorption performance was investigated by varying the mixing ratio of [Fe (CN) 6 ] 4-to Co2+ during synthesis, Rmix. The ammonia capacity was found to be proportional to Rmix, indicating that the NH4+ capacity can be increased by increasing the Na+-ion content in NaCoHCF. To conduct a detailed study, we prepared homogeneous nanoparticles by flow synthesis using a micromixer withRmix¼1.00. Even on the addition of a saline solution (NaCl) with anNa+-ion concentration of 9350 mg L−1, the capacity was maintained : qmax¼ 4.28 mol kg−1. Using Markham–Benton analysis, the selectivity factor, defined by the ratio of equilibrium constants for NH4+to that for Na+, was calculated to bea¼96.2, and 4.36 mol kg−1was found to be the maximum capacity. The high selectivity of NaCoHCF results in good NH4+-adsorption performance, even from seawater. In comparison with other adsorbents under the same conditions and even for a NH4Clsolution, NaCoHCF showed the highest capacity. Moreover, the coexisting Na+caused no interference with the adsorption of ammonium by NaCoHCF, whereas the other adsorbents adsorbed ammonia only slightly from the saline solution. We also found that the pores for NH4+adsorption changed their sizes and shapes after adsorption

    INSIG2 gene rs7566605 polymorphism is associated with severe obesity in Japanese

    The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs7566605 in the upstream region of the insulin-induced gene 2 (INSIG2) is associated with the obesity phenotype in many Caucasian populations. In Japanese, this association with the obesity phenotype is not clear. To investigate the relationship between rs7566605 and obesity in Japanese, we genotyped rs7566605 from severely obese subjects [n = 908, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2] and normal-weight control subjects (n = 1495, BMI < 25 kg/m2). A case–control association analysis revealed that rs7566605 was significantly associated with obesity in Japanese. The P value in the minor allele recessive mode was 0.00020, and the odds ratio (OR) adjusted for gender and age was 1.61 [95% confidential interval (CI) = 1.24–2.09]. Obesity-associated phenotypes, which included the level of BMI, plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and blood pressure, were not associated with the rs7566605 genotype. Thus, rs7566605 in the upstream region of the INSIG2 gene was found to be associated with obesity, i.e., severe obesity, in Japanese

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
