Exploring Consumersâ Coping Behaviors in Online Double Deviation Scenarios: From Power Perspective
Service recovery is a critical moment of truth in retaining customers and reinforcing customer relationships, and has been considered as an âAchilles\u27 heelâ in online marketplaces. Poor service recoveries exacerbate the negative effects of the failure, producing a âdouble deviationâ effect. The double deviation effect may arise from the sellerâs power misuse and then dissolve the buyer-seller relationship (e.g., violate consumer psychological contract), elicit consumer negative emotions which lead to customer coping behaviors. This study links the theories of psychological contract violation (PCV), emotion, and coping from the power perspective to investigate the double deviation scenario in online auction marketplaces. Two moderators (perceived power and perceived consumer empowerment) are considered in our proposed model. Data collected from 181 consumers of one auction website provide support for the proposed model. The results shed light on what constitutes the determinants of consumer judgments while facing double deviation scenario and how consumers react to and cope with it in online marketplaces. Implications and limitations are discussed
Age-dependent immune profile in healthy individuals: an original study, systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: The circulatory peripheral immune system is the most convenient approach for determining an individualâs immune status. Due to various reasons, while previous studies have addressed the critical impact of age, most individual studies did not analyze immunosenescence in a systemic manner, which complicates the possibility of building a reference range for age-dependent immune profiles for effective immune monitoring. To address this gap, this study analyzed a group of healthy individuals to establish age-specific reference ranges of the healthy circulatory immune profile, and a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to validate the findings and create generalizable immune cell reference ranges. Results: Our study recruited a total of 363 healthy Taiwanese adults (median age 42 years [IQR 30, 62], age range 21 to 87 years, 43.3% male), including 158 under 40 years old, 127 between 40â64 years old, and 78 over 64 years old. Significant age-related alterations were observed in both adaptive and innate immune cell subsets. CD8 + T cells decreased and CD4/CD8 ratio increased, with notable increases in NK cells. CD4 + T cells were less impacted by aging, while CD8 + T cells significantly lost CD28 and increased CD31 expression with age. A clear reverse trend in naĂŻve and memory subsets of CD4 + and CD8 + T cells was observed. Detailed reference ranges for immune cell subsets in healthy Taiwanese adults were established. A systematic review included 7,425 adults and a meta-analysis of 12 eligible studies confirmed our findings in Taiwan, enhancing generalizability. Conclusions: Combined with previous studies and original data through a systematic review and meta-analysis, we highlighted and quantified significant immune profile differences between older and younger individuals. The sex and age-specific reference ranges for peripheral immune cell subsets can serve as a basis for effective immune monitoring of various aging-related illnesses
Epidemiology of acute otitis media among young children: A multiple database study in Taiwan
Background/PurposeAcute otitis media (AOM) is a common complication of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) among children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the epidemiology of AOM among young children in Taiwan, including the age incidence and seasonality by combining multiple databases.MethodsTwo country-based questionnaire survey studies had been conducted to evaluate the experience of otitis media (OM) among young children: one in 2007 and the other between 2005 and 2010. The number of OM cases (5% of population younger than 7 years) in 2005 and annual visiting rates for URTI from 2005 to 2010 obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan were collected and comprised the third database. The fourth database comprised ambulatory visits of children with OM to a medical center in central Taiwan between 2005 and 2010.ResultsData from a total of 1099 questionnaires were entered into Database I in 2007, and data from 9705 questionnaires between 2005 and 2010 comprised Database II. There were 86,702 children (younger than 7 years, representing 5% of the whole population for this age group) retrieved from Database III in 2007, and 5,904 cases of OM in children between 2005 and 2010 in a hospital. In Database I, 7.46% children experienced at least one episode of AOM compared with 9.21% in Database II for children aged 5 years and younger. In Database III, 13.2% children younger than 7 years had AOM in 2005. The peak season of AOM among children was from March to May (Databases III and IV).ConclusionAOM was thought to be a very common disease among children; however, this comparative analysis showed that the overall prevalence of AOM among children younger than 5 years was only 20%, much lower than in other countries. AOM was more prevalent during the spring season, and still was similarly common after age 2 years
Oxidized-monolayer Tunneling Barrier for Strong Fermi-level Depinning in Layered InSe Transistors
In 2D-semiconductor-based field-effect transistors and optoelectronic
devices, metal-semiconductor junctions are one of the crucial factors
determining device performance. The Fermi-level (FL) pinning effect, which
commonly caused by interfacial gap states, severely limits the tunability of
junction characteristics, including barrier height and contact resistance. A
tunneling contact scheme has been suggested to address the FL pinning issue in
metal-2D-semiconductor junctions, whereas the experimental realization is still
elusive. Here, we show that an oxidized-monolayer-enabled tunneling barrier can
realize a pronounced FL depinning in indium selenide (InSe) transistors,
exhibiting a large pinning factor of 0.5 and a highly modulated Schottky
barrier height. The FL depinning can be attributed to the suppression of metal-
and disorder-induced gap states as a result of the high-quality tunneling
contacts. Structural characterizations indicate uniform and atomically thin
surface oxidation layer inherent from nature of van der Waals materials and
atomically sharp oxide-2D-semiconductor interfaces. Moreover, by effectively
lowering the Schottky barrier height, we achieve an electron mobility of 2160
cm/Vs and a contact barrier of 65 meV in two-terminal InSe transistors. The
realization of strong FL depinning in high-mobility InSe transistors with the
oxidized monolayer presents a viable strategy to exploit layered semiconductors
in contact engineering for advanced electronics and optoelectronics
The greatest loss of unpleasant smells may be related to the risk of more severe PD symptoms
BackgroundLimited research has explored the relationship between the valence of olfactory dysfunction and PD clinical symptoms. This study aimed to investigate correlations between the emotional valence of olfactory impairment and different domains of PD symptoms.MethodsPD patients who fulfilled the clinically probable PD diagnostic criteria of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Clinical Diagnostic Criteria for Parkinsonâs Disease were recruited from the Center for Parkinson and Movement Disorders at Taichung Veterans General Hospital between October 2016 and April 2022. Demographic data and serial clinical assessments were collected, including the traditional Chinese version of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT-TC) and Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinsonâs Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Thirty-five odors from the UPSIT-TC were classified into neutral, pleasant or unpleasant groups. Group comparisons, correlation analyses, and linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between olfactory impairment of UPSIT-TC odors, considering emotional valence, and MDS-UPDRS subscores across various domains.ResultsA total of 176 PD patients were recruited for analysis. Patients in the predominantly neutral/unpleasant odor impairment groups had higher MDS-UPDRS part III scores compared to those in the predominantly pleasant odor impairment group (pleasant vs. neutral vs. unpleasant odor impairment groups: 26.79â±â13.59 vs. 35.33â±â16.36 vs. 31.57â±â12.37, pâ=â0.009). This trend was also noted in MDS-UPDRS rigidity, bradykinesia, and akinetic-rigid subscores (pâ=â0.003, pâ=â0.012, and pâ=â0.001, respectively). Correlation analysis revealed a weak but significant correlation between rigidity/akinetic-rigid subscores and misidentification numbers for neutral/unpleasant odors (all pâ<â0.05), with age, gender, LEDD, and disease duration as covariates. All significances were retained in the linear regression analysis.ConclusionOur results emphasize the link between olfactory impairment of specific emotional valence, neutral/unpleasant odors, and PD severity, particularly with respect to akinetic-rigid symptoms. A concise olfactory test that focuses on both neutral and unpleasant odors may offer deeper insights into PD symptoms
Participation of Children with Disabilities in Taiwan: The Gap between Independence and Frequency
BackgroundIndependence and frequency are two distinct dimensions of participation in daily life. The gap between independence and frequency may reflect the role of the environment on participation, but this distinction has not been fully explored.MethodsA total of 18,119 parents or primary caregivers of children with disabilities aged 6.0-17.9 years were interviewed in a cross-sectional nationwide survey with the Functioning Scale of the Disability Evaluation System - Child version (FUNDES-Child). A section consisting of 20 items measured the childrenâs daily participation in 4 environmental settings: home, neighborhood/community, school, and home/community. Higher independence and frequency restriction scores indicated greater limitation of participation in daily activities. Scores for independence, frequency and independence-frequency gaps were examined across ages along with trend analysis. ANOVA was used to compare the gaps across settings and diagnoses for children with mild levels of severity of impairment.FindingsA negative independence-frequency gap (restriction of frequency was greater than that of independence) was found for children with mild to severe levels of impairment. A positive gap (restriction of independence was greater than that of frequency) was found for children with profound levels of severity. The gaps became wider with age in most settings of children with mild impairment and different diagnoses. Widest negative gaps were found for the neighborhood/community settings than for the other three settings for children with mild to severe impairment.ConclusionsChildrenâs participation and independence-frequency gaps depend not only on the severity of their impairments or diagnoses, but also on their age, the setting and the support provided by their environment. In Taiwan, more frequency restrictions than ability restrictions were found for children with mild to moderate severity, especially in the neighborhood/community setting, and increased with age. Further identification of environmental opportunities that positively impact frequency of participation is needed
Association of combination antiretroviral therapy with risk of neurological diseases in patients with HIV/AIDS in Taiwan: a nested case-control study
Heterogeneous neurocognitive impairment remains an important issue, even in the era of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), with an incidence ranging from 15% to 65%. Although ART drugs with higher penetration scores to the central nervous system (CNS) show better HIV replication control in the CNS, the association between CNS penetration effectiveness (CPE) scores and neurocognitive impairment remains inconclusive. To explore whether ART exposure is associated with the risk of neurological diseases among patients with HIV/AIDS, this study in Taiwan involved 2,571 patients with neurological diseases and 10,284 matched, randomly selected patients without neurological diseases between 2010 and 2017. A conditional logistic regression model was used in this study. The parameters for ART exposure included ART usage, timing of exposure, cumulative defined daily dose (DDD), adherence, and cumulative CPE score. Incident cases of neurological diseases, including CNS infections, cognitive disorders, vasculopathy, and peripheral neuropathy, were obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Odds ratios (ORs) for the risk of neurological diseases were conducted using a multivariate conditional logistic regression model. Patients with a history of past exposure (OR: 1.68, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.22â2.32), low cumulative DDDs (< 2,500) (OR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.15â1.42), low adherence (0 < adherence (ADH) †0.8) (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.30â1.64), or high cumulative CPE scores (>14) (OR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.14â1.57) had a high risk of neurological diseases. When stratified by classes of ART drugs, patients with low cumulative DDDs or low adherence had a high risk of neurological diseases, including NRTIs, PIs, NNRTIs, INSTIs, and multi-drug tablets. Subgroup analyses also suggested that patients with low cumulative DDDs or low adherence had a high risk of neurological diseases when they had high cumulative CPE scores. Patients with high cumulative DDDs or medication adherence were protected against neurological diseases only when they had low cumulative CPE scores (†14). Patients may be at risk for neurological diseases when they have low cumulative DDDs, low adherence, or usage with high cumulative CPE scores. Continuous usage and low cumulative CPE scores of ART drugs may benefit neurocognitive health in patients with HIV/AIDS
Identification of IGF1, SLC4A4, WWOX, and SFMBT1 as Hypertension Susceptibility Genes in Han Chinese with a Genome-Wide Gene-Based Association Study
Hypertension is a complex disorder with high prevalence rates all over the world. We conducted the first genome-wide gene-based association scan for hypertension in a Han Chinese population. By analyzing genome-wide single-nucleotide-polymorphism data of 400 matched pairs of young-onset hypertensive patients and normotensive controls genotyped with the Illumina HumanHap550-Duo BeadChip, 100 susceptibility genes for hypertension were identified and also validated with permutation tests. Seventeen of the 100 genes exhibited differential allelic and expression distributions between patient and control groups. These genes provided a good molecular signature for classifying hypertensive patients and normotensive controls. Among the 17 genes, IGF1, SLC4A4, WWOX, and SFMBT1 were not only identified by our gene-based association scan and gene expression analysis but were also replicated by a gene-based association analysis of the Hong Kong Hypertension Study. Moreover, cis-acting expression quantitative trait loci associated with the differentially expressed genes were found and linked to hypertension. IGF1, which encodes insulin-like growth factor 1, is associated with cardiovascular disorders, metabolic syndrome, decreased body weight/size, and changes of insulin levels in mice. SLC4A4, which encodes the electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 1, is associated with decreased body weight/size and abnormal ion homeostasis in mice. WWOX, which encodes the WW domain-containing protein, is related to hypoglycemia and hyperphosphatemia. SFMBT1, which encodes the scm-like with four MBT domains protein 1, is a novel hypertension gene. GRB14, TMEM56 and KIAA1797 exhibited highly significant differential allelic and expressed distributions between hypertensive patients and normotensive controls. GRB14 was also found relevant to blood pressure in a previous genetic association study in East Asian populations. TMEM56 and KIAA1797 may be specific to Taiwanese populations, because they were not validated by the two replication studies. Identification of these genes enriches the collection of hypertension susceptibility genes, thereby shedding light on the etiology of hypertension in Han Chinese populations
Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in âs = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at âs = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
