    Impact of seeding rate, seeding date, rate and method of phosphorus application in faba bean (Vicia faba L. minor) in the absence of moisture stress

    Field experiments were conducted during the winter seasons of 1998-1999, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 at the semi-arid region in north of Jordan, to study the effect of seeding dates (14 January, 28 January and 12 February), seeding rates (50, 75 and 100 plants per metre), phosphorus levels (0, 17.5, 35.0 and 52.5 kg P per ha) and two methods of P placement (banding and broadcast). Seeding rate, seeding date, and rate of phosphorus had a significant effect on most of the measured traits and the yield determinates. Method of phosphorus application had only a significant effect on seed yield and seed weight per plant. In general high yields were obtained by early seeding (14 January), high seeding rate (100-plant per square metre), and P application (52.5 kg P per ha) drilled with the seed after cultivation (banded)

    Minimal surfaces in nuclear pasta with the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock approach

    In continuation to the studies of the whole variety of pasta shapes in [1], we present here calculations performed with the Hartree-Fock and time-dependent Hartree- Fock method concerning the mid-density range of pasta shapes: The slab-like, connected rod-like (p-surface) and the gyroidal shapes. On the one hand we present simulations of the dynamic formation of these shapes at fi- nite temperature. On the other hand we calculate the binding energies of these shapes for varying simulation box lengths and mean densities. All of these shapes are found to be at least metastable. The slab shape has a slightly lower energy because of the lack of curvature, but among these three configurations the gyroidal shape is metastable for the widest range in mean density

    Second order analysis of geometric functionals of Boolean models

    This paper presents asymptotic covariance formulae and central limit theorems for geometric functionals, including volume, surface area, and all Minkowski functionals and translation invariant Minkowski tensors as prominent examples, of stationary Boolean models. Special focus is put on the anisotropic case. In the (anisotropic) example of aligned rectangles, we provide explicit analytic formulae and compare them with simulation results.     Loosely distinctive features for robust surface alignment

    Many successful feature detectors and descriptors exist for 2D intensity images. However, obtaining the same effectiveness in the domain of 3D objects has proven to be a more elusive goal. In fact, the smoothness often found in surfaces and the lack of texture information on the range images produced by conventional 3D scanners hinder both the localization of interesting points and the distinctiveness of their characterization in terms of descriptors. To overcome these limitations several approaches have been suggested, ranging from the simple enlargement of the area over which the descriptors are computed to the reliance on external texture information. In this paper we offer a change in perspective, where a game-theoretic matching technique that exploits global geometric consistency allows to obtain an extremely robust surface registration even when coupled with simple surface features exhibiting very low distinctiveness. In order to assess the performance of the whole approach we compare it with state-of-the-art alignment pipelines. Furthermore, we show that using the novel feature points with well-known alternative non-global matching techniques leads to poorer results. © 2010 Springer-Verlag

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
