Transport of a quantum degenerate heteronuclear Bose-Fermi mixture in a harmonic trap
We report on the transport of mixed quantum degenerate gases of bosonic 87Rb
and fermionic 40K in a harmonic potential provided by a modified QUIC trap. The
samples are transported over a distance of 6 mm to the geometric center of the
anti-Helmholtz coils of the QUIC trap. This transport mechanism was implemented
by a small modification of the QUIC trap and is free of losses and heating. It
allows all experiments using QUIC traps to use the highly homogeneous magnetic
fields that can be created in the center of a QUIC trap and improves the
optical access to the atoms, e.g., for experiments with optical lattices. This
mechanism may be cascaded to cover even larger distances for applications with
quantum degenerate samples.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Ground State Properties of an Asymmetric Hubbard Model for Unbalanced Ultracold Fermionic Quantum Gases
In order to describe unbalanced ultracold fermionic quantum gases on optical
lattices in a harmonic trap, we investigate an attractive () asymmetric
() Hubbard model with a Zeeman-like magnetic
field. In view of the model's spatial inhomogeneity, we focus in this paper on
the solution at Hartree-Fock level. The Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian is
diagonalized with particular emphasis on superfluid phases. For the special
case of spin-independent hopping we analytically determine the number of
solutions of the resulting self-consistency equations and the nature of the
possible ground states at weak coupling. Numerical results for unbalanced
Fermi-mixtures are presented within the local density approximation. In
particular, we find a fascinating shell structure, involving normal and
superfluid phases. For the general case of spin-dependent hopping we calculate
the density of states and the possible superfluid phases in the ground state.

Elliptic flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb
collisions at 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron
Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region
(||<0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2< < 5.0 GeV/. The
elliptic flow signal v, measured using the 4-particle correlation method,
averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 0.002
(stat) 0.004 (syst) in the 40-50% centrality class. The differential
elliptic flow v reaches a maximum of 0.2 near = 3
GeV/. Compared to RHIC Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV, the elliptic flow
increases by about 30%. Some hydrodynamic model predictions which include
viscous corrections are in agreement with the observed increase.Comment: 10 pages, 4 captioned figures, published version, figures at

The ALICE Transition Radiation Detector: Construction, operation, and performance
The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/c in p-Pb collisions and the resolution at high transverse momentum improves by about 40% when including the TRD information in track reconstruction. The triggering capability is demonstrated both for jet, light nuclei, and electron selection. (c) 2017 CERN for the benefit of the Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V
Higher harmonic anisotropic flow measurements of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report on the first measurement of the triangular , quadrangular
, and pentagonal charged particle flow in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76
TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We show
that the triangular flow can be described in terms of the initial spatial
anisotropy and its fluctuations, which provides strong constraints on its
origin. In the most central events, where the elliptic flow and
have similar magnitude, a double peaked structure in the two-particle azimuthal
correlations is observed, which is often interpreted as a Mach cone response to
fast partons. We show that this structure can be naturally explained from the
measured anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published version, figures at

The role of open-air inhalatoria in the air quality improvement in spa towns
Objectives: The present study was aimed at evaluating microbiological contamination of air in Ciechocinek and Inowrocław – Polish lowland spa towns. Additionally, the impact of open-air inhalatoria on the quality of air was evaluated. Material and Methods: Air samples were collected seasonally in the urban areas, in the recreation areas and in the vicinity of inhalatoria in both towns using impaction. The numbers of mesophilic bacteria, staphylococci, hemolytic bacteria and actinomycetes were determined on media according to the Polish Standard PN-86/Z-04111/02. The number of moulds was determined on media according to the Polish Standard PN-86/Z-04111/03. Results: While the highest numbers of microorganisms were noted at the sites located in the urban areas, the lowest numbers were noted in the vicinity of the open-air inhalatoria. In all the investigated air samples the values of bioaerosol concentrations were below the recommended TLVs (≤ 5000 CFU×m–3 for both bacteria and fungi in outdoor environments). Location of the sampling site was invariably a decisive factor in determining the number of microorganisms in the air. Conclusions: The aerosol which is formed in the open-air inhalatoria has a positive influence on microbiological air quality. Owing to a unique microclimate and low air contamination, Ciechocinek and Inowrocław comply with all necessary requirements set for health resorts specializing in treating upper respiratory tract infections
