    Preliminary modelling of crack nucleation and propagation in SiC/SiC accident-tolerant fuel during routine operational transients using peridynamics

    Silicon carbide fibre in silicon carbide matrix composites (SiC/SiC) are a promising cladding for use in accident tolerant fuels (ATF) in current light water reactor (LWR) designs. However, as they are a radically different material from current metal clads, current thermomechanical simulation methods struggle to accurately predict their behaviour, especially regarding the potential development of cracks. Thus, a new peridynamic model for SiC/SiC cladding has been developed in the Abaqus finite element code. The material model was isotropic and considers matrix cracking and fibre pull-out. The thermal expansion, swelling and the degradation of the thermal conductivity are modelled under typical LWR irradiation conditions. The swelling on the outer surface is predicted to be greater than the inner surface due to the lower irradiation temperature, causing a tensile stress on the inside of the cladding; tension being more challenging for a ceramic than a metal. This stress increases during the decrease in power at the start of a typical pressurised water reactor refuelling outage and causes microcracking of the matrix on the cladding inner surface. In models without fibres, cracks would propagate through the cladding. If fibres are modelled, matrix cracking will extend to a depth of around 20% through the cladding from the inner surface, which is unlikely to be an acceptable design. If an inner monolith of SiC is additionally modelled, cracking propagates through the monolith and acts as a stress raiser for matrix cracking in the composite, and therefore does not constitute a design improvement. If an outer SiC monolith is modelled, fibre pull-out strain on the inner surface of the cladding was increased by just under 70%. No cracks are predicted in an outer monolith which may therefore remain gas-tight and thus a more suitable design. These predictions are consistent with experimental findings

    A stochastic model for heart rate fluctuations

    Normal human heart rate shows complex fluctuations in time, which is natural, since heart rate is controlled by a large number of different feedback control loops. These unpredictable fluctuations have been shown to display fractal dynamics, long-term correlations, and 1/f noise. These characterizations are statistical and they have been widely studied and used, but much less is known about the detailed time evolution (dynamics) of the heart rate control mechanism. Here we show that a simple one-dimensional Langevin-type stochastic difference equation can accurately model the heart rate fluctuations in a time scale from minutes to hours. The model consists of a deterministic nonlinear part and a stochastic part typical to Gaussian noise, and both parts can be directly determined from the measured heart rate data. Studies of 27 healthy subjects reveal that in most cases the deterministic part has a form typically seen in bistable systems: there are two stable fixed points and one unstable one.Comment: 8 pages in PDF, Revtex style.     Near-infrared, mode-locked waveguide lasers with multi-GHz repetition rates

    In this work, we discuss mode-locking results obtained with low-loss, ion-exchanged waveguide lasers. With Yb3+-doped phosphate glass waveguide lasers, a repetition rate of up to 15.2 GHz was achieved at a wavelength of 1047 nm with an average power of 27 mW and pulse duration of 811 fs. The gap between the waveguide and the SESAM introduced negative group velocity dispersion via the Gires Tournois Interferometer (GTI) effect which allowed the soliton mode-locking of the device. A novel quantum dot SESAM was used to mode-lock Er3+, Yb3+-doped phosphate glass waveguide lasers around 1500 nm. Picosecond pulses were achieved at a maximum repetition rate of 6.8 GHz and an average output power of 30 mW. The repetition rate was tuned by more than 1 MHz by varying the pump power

    Seed dormancy and germination in Dodonaea viscosa (Sapindaceae) from south-western Saudi Arabia

    Dodonaea viscosa (Sapindaceae) is widespread in the mountainous highlands of the southwestern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where it is a medicinally important species for the people of Saudi Arabia. Seeds of this species were collected from Mount Atharb in the Al-Baha region, at an altitude of 2100 m. The aims of this study were to determine if the seeds of D. viscosa have physical dormancy (i.e. a water-impermeable seed coat) and, if so, what treatments would break dormancy, and what conditions promote germination after dormancy has been broken. The dormancy-breaking treatments included: soaking of seeds in concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) for 10 minutes, immersion in boiling water for 10 minutes and exposure to 50 °C for 1 minute. After seeds had been pre-treated with H2SO4, to break dormancy, they were incubated at constant temperatures from 5 to 35°C, under 12-h photoperiods or in continuous darkness, and germination recorded. Salinity tolerance was investigated by incubating acid-scarified seeds in 0, 100, 200 and 300 mM NaCl in the light at 25°C. Untreated seeds had low final germination (30%). Seeds that had been acid-scarified, immersed in boiling water or exposed to 50 °C all achieved 91% subsequently when incubated at 25°C. Thus, seeds of this species in Saudi Arabia have physical dormancy, which can be broken by all three treatments designed to increase the permeability of the testa. After pre-treatment, there was a broad optimum constant temperature for germination that ranged between 5-25°C but germination was inhibited by higher temperatures (30 and 35°C). Light had little effect on this germination response. Scarified seeds were also sensitive to salinity, with the highest germination in distilled water and complete inhibition in 400 mM NaCl. Seeds that failed to germinate in saline treatments were mostly able to germinate on transfer to distilled water, suggesting osmotic inhibition

    Supervised Treatment in Outpatients for Schizophrenia Plus (STOPS+): Protocol for a cluster randomised trial of a community-based intervention to improve treatment adherence and reduce the treatment gap for schizophrenia in Pakistan

    Introduction: There is a significant treatment gap, with only a few community-based services for people with schizophrenia in Low- and Middle-Income countries. Poor treatment adherence in schizophrenia is associated with poorer health outcomes, suicide attempts and death. We previously reported the effectiveness of STOPS (Supervised Treatment in Outpatients for Schizophrenia) for improving treatment adherence in patients with schizophrenia. However, STOPS was evaluated in a tertiary care setting with no primary care involvement, limiting its generalisability to the wider at-risk population. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of STOPS+ in scaling up the primary care treatment of schizophrenia to a real-world setting. Methods and analysis: The effectiveness of the STOPS+ intervention in improving the level of functioning and medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia in Pakistan will be evaluated using a cluster randomised controlled trial design. We aim to recruit 526 participants from 24 Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) randomly allocated in 1:1 ratio to STOPS+ intervention and Enhanced Treatment as Usual (ETAU) arms. Participants will be followed-up for 12 months post recruitment. The sample size is estimated for two outcomes (i) The primary clinical outcome is level of functioning, measured using the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale, and (ii) the primary process outcome is adherence to treatment regimen measured using a validated measure. An intention-to-treat approach will be used for the primary analysis. Ethics and Dissemination: Ethical approval has been obtained from Keele University Ethical Review Panel (ref: MH-190017) and Khyber Medical University Ethical Review Board (ref: DIR-KMU-EB/ST/000648). The results of the STOPS+ trial will be reported in peer reviewed journals and academic conferences and disseminated to local stakeholders and policy makers
