Implementing a self service report designer and viewer application

Supporting users in dealing with huge amount of raw data and getting value out of data is one of the interesting and evolving topics in the IT world from both technical and usability points of view. The current extensive growth in the amount of data and significant consideration of data analysis in business decision making have forced companies to invest more on data management solutions and tools with innovative and user centered approaches. This thesis work implements a self-service data reporting tool helping ordinary users to visualize, browse and analyze their data. This product allows report designer users to analyze and visualize their data and also design intractable dynamic reports for users who just want to see and play with ready reports. As a result, this product is consisted of two parts, one report designer and one report viewer application. In the first part of this text some technical backgrounds considering report designer applications are mentioned, then the details of the development phase specific to the product under development and consisting of its design and implementation details are discussed and finally some evaluations of the product and design decisions are summarized. Choosing development environment was a critical decision. The practical problems of selecting HTML/JavaScript as the main development technology is reported by development team. JavaScript codebase is hard to manage, there is not enough tooling support for JavaScript programming which reduces the speed of development, moreover HTML based pages which are hosted inside a web browser were not flexible enough to support users in interacting with UI (in report designer application),or in a better way, it is discussed that supporting users with a good experience in UI interactions for report designer application was a complicated task because of choosing HTML as UI technology. Furthermore, in the designed user’s workflow model it was decided to empower users by providing them with a rich user control and freedom as the main feature of the application, though at the end, this design decision caused some complexities and lack of efficiency in the usability of the product

Effectuation as Ineffectual? Applying the 3E Theory-Assessment Framework to a Proposed New Theory of Entrepreneurship

Effectuation is a proposed new theory of entrepreneurship, with insufficient empirical testing and critical analysis. Drawing on a new, comprehensive set of theory-building criteria—sourced from and complementing those of Robert Dubin and others—we provide the first formal assessment of effectuation as a theory. We highlight its strengths and weaknesses, leveraging the former to address the latter in five different directions that would build on the existing work to improve this theory. The assessment exercise also displays the value of our assessment framework in guiding the evaluation and development of other existing and future theories in entrepreneurship and management

Effectuation, Not Being Pragmatic or Process Theorizing, Remains Ineffectual: Responding to the Commentaries

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the provocative Dialogue pieces of Read, Sarasvathy, Dew, and Wiltbank (2016; henceforth, “RSDW”); Reuber, Fischer, and Coviello (2016; henceforth, “RFC”); Gupta, Chiles, and McMullen (2016; henceforth, “GCM”); and Garud and Gehman (2016; henceforth, “GG”), each of which makes several claims in defense of effectuation, as well as describes several ways forward in entrepreneurship- and process-related theorizing. We respond in a manner consistent with the traditional perspective in management theorizing that “good theory is practical” (Lewin, 1945), where “theory is theory” (Simon, 1967; Van de Ven, 1989) based on our discipline’s collective commitment to knowledge production (Suddaby, 2014). In fact, we respond in the tradition of scientific theory—its building, its critique, and its defense. Leveraging the logic behind that tradition, we thus refute every point contained in RSDW’s, RFC’s, GCM’s, and GG’s commentaries and attempt to build on what is common to all theory while celebrating what is valuable in the diversity of theorizing (i.e., in the ways we produce theory)

Having a creative day:understanding entrepreneurs’ daily idea generation through a recovery lens

Prior research has shown that trait creativity is important for becoming an entrepreneur and successful in business. We explore a new perspective by investigating how recovery from work stress influences entrepreneurs’ daily idea generation, a key aspect of creativity. Physio-logical and mental recovery enables the cognitive processes of creative problem-solving. Moreover, differences in mental recovery processes help to explain age-related changes in en-trepreneurs’ creativity. Multilevel analyses based on 415 daily data from 62 entrepreneurs support our predictions. Our study introduces a new “state” perspective to understanding en-trepreneurs’ creativity, and highlights the critical role of recovery processes for idea genera-tion

Does organizational creativity always drive market performance?

This study develops and tests arguments that the relationship between organizational creativity and market performance is channeled through new product development (NPD) capability, and that the indirect effect of creativity on performance, via NPD capability, is conditional upon levels of environment dynamism and market responsiveness. The proposed relationships are tested on a sample of 221 small- andmedium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in a major sub-Saharan Africanmarket. Findings from the study indicate that process and product NPD capabilities partially mediate the effect of novelty and usefulness elements of organizational creativity on market performance. The study further finds that while environment dynamism weakens the indirect effects of novelty and usefulness of organizational creativity, via process and product NPD capabilities, on market performance, the effects are strengthened under conditions of greater responsiveness to target market needs.A theoretical contribution from this study is the finding that how organizational creativity dimensions drive market performance is more complex than previously thought: it depends on whether or not organizational creativity components are first used to develop an organization's process and product innovation capabilities, and whether target market environment conditions are dynamic and an organization has ability to respond to target market demands
