    A biphotons double slit experiment

In this paper we present a double slit experiment where two undistinguishable photons produced by type I PDC are sent each to a well defined slit. Data about the diffraction and interference patterns for coincidences are presented and discussed. An analysis of these data allows a first test of standard quantum mechanics against de Broglie-Bohm theory

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTA study to characterize the epidemiological status of bovine brucellosis was carried out in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The State was divided in seven regions. Three hundred herds were randomly sampled in each region and a pre-established number of animals were sampled in each of these herds. A total of 16,072 serum samples from 1,957 herds, were collected. In each herd, it was applied an epidemiological questionnaire focused on herd traits as well as husbandry and sanitary practices that could be associated with the risk of infection. The serum samples were screened for antibodies against Brucella spp. by the Rose-Bengal Test and all positive sera were re-tested by the 2-mercaptoethanol test. The herd was considered positive if at least one animal was positive on both tests. The prevalences of infected herds and animals in the State were, respectively 2.1% [1.5-2.6%] and 1.0% [0.60-1.4%]. In the regions, the prevalences of infected herds and animals were, respectively: region 1, 3.1% [1.4-5.7%] and 0.95% [0.0-2.0%]; region 2, 7.7% [4.9-11.3%] and 1.0% [0.40-1.7%]; region 3, 5.7% [3.4-8.8%] and 2.1% [0.41-3.8%]; region 4, 0.66% [0.08-2.4%] and 0.66% [0.0-1.8%]; region 5, 0.66% [0.08-2.4%] and 0.05% [0.0-0.13%]; region 6, 0.0% [0.0-1.3%] and 0.0% [0.0-0.25%]; and region 7, 5.4% [2.5-10.1%] and 2.9% [0.49-5.3%]. The risk factors (odds ratio, OR) associated with the presence of infection were: beef herd (OR= 4.27 [1.82-10.01]) and recent history of abortion (OR= 3.27-1.71-6.25])

Interaction of Genetic Variations in NFE2L2 and SELENOS Modulates the Risk of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

Background: Several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are known to increase the risk of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT); such SNPs reside in thyroid-specific genes or in genes related to autoimmunity, inflammation, and/or cellular defense to stress. The transcription factor Nrf2, encoded by NFE2L2, is a master regulator of the cellular antioxidant response. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of genetic variation in NFE2L2 on the risk of developing HT. Methods: In a case-control candidate gene association study, functional SNPs in the NFE2L2 promoter (rs35652124, rs6706649, and rs6721961) were examined either as independent risk factors or in combination with a previously characterized HT risk allele (rs28665122) in the gene SELENOS, encoding selenoprotein S (SelS). A total of 997 individuals from the north of Portugal (Porto) were enrolled, comprising 481 HT patients and 516 unrelated healthy controls. SELENOS and NFE2L2 SNPs were genotyped using TaqMan ® assays and Sanger sequencing, respectively. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using logistic regression, with adjustment for sex and age. Expression of SelS was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in thyroid tissue from HT patients and control subjects. Molecular interactions between the Nrf2 and SelS pathways were investigated in thyroid tissues from mice and in rat PCCL3 thyroid follicular cells. Results: When all three NFE2L2 SNPs were considered together, the presence of one or more minor alleles was associated with a near-significant increased risk (OR = 1.43, p = 0.072). Among subjects harboring only major NFE2L2 alleles, there was no increased HT risk associated with heterozygosity or homozygosity for the SELENOS minor allele. Conversely, in subjects heterozygous or homozygous for the SELENOS risk allele, the presence of an NFE2L2 minor allele significantly increased HT risk by 2.8-fold (p = 0.003). Immunohistochemistry showed reduced expression of SelS in thyroid follicular cells of HT patients. In Nrf2 knockout mice, there was reduced expression of SelS in thyroid follicular cells; conversely, in PCCL3 cells, reducing SelS expression caused reduced activity of Nrf2 signaling. Conclusions: The NFE2L2 promoter genotype interacts with the SELENOS promoter genotype to modulate the risk of HT in a Portuguese population. This interaction may be due to a bidirectional positive feedback between the Nrf2 and SelS pathways

The Spin-dependent Structure Function of the Proton g_1^p and a Test of the Bjorken Sum Rule

The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A_1^p, has been measured at COMPASS in deepinelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q2 > 1 (GeV/c)^2, 0.004 < x < 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g_1^p(x) by a factor of two in the region x < 0.02. The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g_1^NS(x,Q2). The isovector quark density, Delta_q_3(x,Q2), is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g_1^NS. The first moment of Delta_q3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants g_A/g_V = 1.28+-0.07(stat)+-0.10(syst).Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on transversely polarised protons

The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range. These results nicely support the present theoretical interpretation of these asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation functions.Comment: 9 Pages, 5 figure

Quark helicity distributions from longitudinal spin asymmetries in muon-proton and muon-deuteron scattering

Double-spin asymmetries for production of charged pions and kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic muon scattering have been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data, obtained by scattering a 160 GeV muon beam off a longitudinally polarised NH_3 target, cover a range of the Bjorken variable x between 0.004 and 0.7. A leading order evaluation of the helicity distributions for the three lightest quarks and antiquark flavours derived from these asymmetries and from our previous deuteron data is presented. The resulting values of the sea quark distributions are small and do not show any sizable dependence on x in the range of the measurements. No significant difference is observed between the strange and antistrange helicity distributions, both compatible with zero. The integrated value of the flavour asymmetry of the helicity distribution of the light-quark sea, \Delta u-bar - \Delta d-bar, is found to be slightly positive, about 1.5 standard deviations away from zero.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

The Deuteron Spin-dependent Structure Function g1d and its First Moment

We present a measurement of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g1d based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002-2004. The data provide an accurate evaluation for Gamma_1^d, the first moment of g1d(x), and for the matrix element of the singlet axial current, a0. The results of QCD fits in the next to leading order (NLO) on all g1 deep inelastic scattering data are also presented. They provide two solutions with the gluon spin distribution function Delta G positive or negative, which describe the data equally well. In both cases, at Q^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2 the first moment of Delta G is found to be of the order of 0.2 - 0.3 in absolute value.Comment: fits redone using MRST2004 instead of MRSV1998 for G(x), correlation matrix adde

A new measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a transversely polarised deuteron target

    Get PDF
New high precision measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2003 and 2004 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. Both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be compatible with zero, within the present statistical errors, which are more than a factor of 2 smaller than those of the published COMPASS results from the 2002 data. The final results from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 runs are compared with naive expectations and with existing model calculations.Comment: 40 pages, 28 figure
