Capacitive coupling study of the HERD SCD prototype: preliminary results

The Silicon Charge Detector (SCD) is a subdetector of the High Energy Cosmic Radiation Detection payload. The dynamic range of the silicon microstrip detector can be extended by the capacitive coupling effect, which is related to the interstrip capacitance and the coupling capacitance. A detector prototype with several sets of parameters was designed and tested in the ion beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The capacitive coupling fractions with readout strip and floating strip incidences were studied using the beam test data and SPICE simulation

Emerging tick-borne infections in mainland China: an increasing public health threat

    Get PDF
Since the beginning of the 1980s, 33 emerging tick-borne agents have been identified in mainland China, including eight species of spotted fever group rickettsiae, seven species in the family Anaplasmataceae, six genospecies in the complex Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, 11 species of Babesia, and the virus causing severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. In this Review we have mapped the geographical distributions of human cases of infection. 15 of the 33 emerging tick-borne agents have been reported to cause human disease, and their clinical characteristics have been described. The non-specific clinical manifestations caused by tick-borne pathogens present a major diagnostic challenge and most physicians are unfamiliar with the many tick-borne diseases that present with non-specific symptoms in the early stages of the illness. Advances in and application of modern molecular techniques should help with identification of emerging tick-borne pathogens and improve laboratory diagnosis of human infections. We expect that more novel tick-borne infections in ticks and animals will be identified and additional emerging tick-borne diseases in human beings will be discovered

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has posed a significant threat to both humans and birds, and it has spanned large geographic areas and various ecological systems throughout Asia, Europe and Africa, but especially in mainland China. Great efforts in control and prevention of the disease, including universal vaccination campaigns in poultry and active serological and virological surveillance, have been undertaken in mainland China since the beginning of 2006. In this study, we aim to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of HPAI H5N1, and identify influencing factors favoring the occurrence of HPAI H5N1 outbreaks in poultry in mainland China. Our study shows that HPAI H5N1 outbreaks took place sporadically after vaccination campaigns in poultry, and mostly occurred in the cold season. The positive tests in routine virological surveillance of HPAI H5N1 virus in chicken, duck, goose as well as environmental samples were mapped to display the potential risk distribution of the virus. Southern China had a higher positive rate than northern China, and positive samples were mostly detected from chickens in the north, while the majority were from duck in the south, and a negative correlation with monthly vaccination rates in domestic poultry was found (R = −0.19, p value = 0.005). Multivariate panel logistic regression identified vaccination rate, interaction between distance to the nearest city and national highway, interaction between distance to the nearest lak

A Chinese patent medicine’s long-term efficacy on non-dialysis patients with CKD stages 3–5: a retrospective cohort study

    Get PDF
BackgroundChinese patent medicine is commonly used in China as an important treatment mechanism to thwart the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 3–5, among which Niaoduqing granules are a representative Chinese patent medicine; however, its long-term efficacy on CKD prognosis remains unclear.MethodsPatients were grouped according to Niaoduqing granule prescription duration (non-Niaoduqing granule (non-NDQ) group vs Niaoduqing granule (NDQ) group). Serum creatinine (SCr) variation was compared using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Multivariate Cox regression models were constructed, adjusting for confounding factors, to explore the risk of composite outcomes (receiving renal replacement therapy (RRT) or having an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)<5 mL/min/1.73 m2, ≥50% decline in the eGFR from the baseline, and doubling of SCr) in individuals consuming Niaoduqing granules.ResultsA total of 1,271 patients were included, with a median follow-up duration of 29.71 (12.10, 56.07) months. The mean SCr Z-scores for the non-NDQ group and NDQ group were −0.175 and 0.153, respectively, at baseline (p = 0.015). The coefficients of the NDQ group from visit 1 to visit 5 were −0.207 (95% CI: −0.346, −0.068, p = 0.004), −0.214 (95% CI: 0.389, −0.039, p = 0.017), −0.324 (95% CI: 0.538, −0.109, p = 0.003), −0.502 (95% CI: 0.761, −0.243, p = 0.000), and −0.252 (95% CI: 0.569, 0.065, p = 0.119), respectively. The survival probability was significantly higher in the NDQ group (p = 0.0039). Taking Niaoduqing granules was a significant protective factor for thwarting disease progression (model 1: HR 0.654 (95% CI 0.489–0.875, p = 0.004); model 2: HR 0.646 (95% CI 0.476, 0.877, p = 0.005); and model 3: HR 0.602 (95% CI 0.442, 0.820, p = 0.001)).ConclusionThe long-term use of Niaoduqing granules improved SCr variation and lowered the risk of CKD progression by 39.8%

Genomic and oncogenic preference of HBV integration in hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can integrate into the human genome, contributing to genomic instability and hepatocarcinogenesis. Here by conducting high-throughput viral integration detection and RNA sequencing, we identify 4,225 HBV integration events in tumour and adjacent non-tumour samples from 426 patients with HCC. We show that HBV is prone to integrate into rare fragile sites and functional genomic regions including CpG islands. We observe a distinct pattern in the preferential sites of HBV integration between tumour and non-tumour tissues. HBV insertional sites are significantly enriched in the proximity of telomeres in tumours. Recurrent HBV target genes are identified with few that overlap. The overall HBV integration frequency is much higher in tumour genomes of males than in females, with a significant enrichment of integration into chromosome 17. Furthermore, a cirrhosis-dependent HBV integration pattern is observed, affecting distinct targeted genes. Our data suggest that HBV integration has a high potential to drive oncogenic transformation

Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

Clinical significance of testing blood parameters on the diagnosis of common microcytic anemia patients

    No full text
Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of different hematology parameters on microcytic anemia patients. Methods Blood samples from patients in PUMCH with different microcytic anemia from October 2017 to September 2018 were tested for routine blood tests, cellular hemoglobin of reticulocytes (CHr), serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), hepcidin and other iron metabolism parameters. Data from different diseases were analyzed and compared. Results Twenty-six iron deficiency anemia (IDA), 12 anemia of chronic disease (ACD), 12 thalassemia (TA), 12 refractory anemia with ring sideroblast (RARS) and 17 normal controls (NC) were tested. The level of MCV (mean corpuscular volume) in IDA and TA group were lower than that of control(P<0.01). MCV level in TA group was even lower than that in IDA. The concentrations of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC) in ACD, IDA, TA, RARS groups were lower than that in NC (P<0.01), among which IDA had the lowest level. All types of anemia, except RARS, had higher level of reticulocyte counts than NC(P<0.01), among them, TA group had the highest level. The level of CHr in ACD, IDA and TA groups was lower than that of NC(P<0.01). SF concentration in IDA group was significantly lower than NC (P<0.01), and was also lower than other 3 groups. ACD and RARS had higher concentrations of SF than NC(P<0.01). As for the levels of transferrin saturation (TS), ACD, IDA, and TA groups were lower than NC (P<0.01), while RARS was significantly higher than NC(P<0.01) and also higher than the other 3 types of anemia. The level of sTfR and sTfR index(sTfR/log SF) in IDA group was significant higher than that in NC(P<0.01), also higher than ACD, TA and RARS groups.ROC curve showed that SF and sTfR index facilitated differentiating IDA from other types of microcytic anemia. Conclusions Routine tests and iron metabolism related parameters from the peripheral blood tests may support the preliminary identification of different kinds of microcytic anemia and further differential diagnosis
