Environmental Atmospheric Turbulence at Florence Airport
We present an analysis of a time series of a wind strength measurements
recorded at Florence airport in the period October 2002 - March 2003. The data
were taken simultaneously by two runway head anemometers, located at a distance
of 900 m, at a frequency of 3.3 10-3 Hz. The data show strong correlations over
long time spans over a few tens of hours. We performed an analysis of wind
velocity as it is usually done for turbulence laboratory experiments. Wind
velocity returns and wind velocity differences were considered. The pdfs of
these quantities exhibit strong non-Gaussian fat tails. The distribution of the
standand deviations of the fluctuations can be successfully reproduced by a
Gamma distribution, while the Log-normal one fails completely. Following Beck
and Cohen superstatistics approach, we extract the Tsallis entropic index q
from this Gamma distribution. The corresponding q-exponential curves reproduce
with a very good accuracy the pdfs of returns and velocity differences.Comment: 6 pages. Talk presented by S.Rizzo at the 8th Experimental Chaos

Joining of CVD-SiC coated and uncoated fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites with pre-sintered Ti3SiC2 MAX phase using Spark Plasma Sintering
CVD-SiC coated and uncoated ceramic matrix composites (Cf/SiC and SiCf/SiC) were joined to their counterparts with a pre-sintered Ti3SiC2 foil using Spark Plasma Sintering. For the first time pre-sintered Ti3SiC2 foil was used as a joining filler. The joining parameters were carefully selected to avoid the decomposition of Ti3SiC2 and the reaction between the joining filler and the CVD-SiC coating, which would have deteriorated the oxidation protective function of the coating. Conformal behaviour of the Ti3SiC2 foil during the diffusion joining and the infiltration of the joining filler into the surface cracks in the CVD -SiC coating allowed the filler to be more integrated with the matrix material. While diffusion bonding occurred during joining of the coated composites, a combination of both solid-state reaction and diffusion bonding was observed for the uncoated Cf/SiC composites. This produced the lower shear strength (19.1 MPa) when compared to the diffusion bonded CVD-SiC coated Cf/SiC (31.1 MPa

Search for Doubly-Charged Higgs Bosons at LEP
Doubly-charged Higgs bosons are searched for in e^+e^- collision data
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV.
Final states with four leptons are analysed to tag the pair-production of
doubly charged Higgs bosons. No significant excess is found and lower limits at
95% confidence level on the doubly-charged Higgs boson mass are derived. They
vary from 95.5 GeV to 100.2 GeV, depending on the decay mode. Doubly-charged
Higgs bosons which couple to electrons would modify the cross section and
forward-backward asymmetry of the e^+e^- -> e^+e^- process. The measurements of
these quantities do not deviate from the Standard Model expectations and
doubly-charged Higgs bosons with masses up to the order of a TeV are excluded
Search for Extra Dimensions in Boson and Fermion Pair Production in e+e- Interactions at LEP
Extra spatial dimensions are proposed by recent theories that postulate the
scale of gravity to be of the same order as the electroweak scale. A sizeable
interaction between gravitons and Standard Model particles is then predicted.
Effects of these new interactions in boson and fermion pair production are
searched for in the data sample collected at centre-of-mass energies above the
Z pole by the L3 detector at LEP. In addition, the direct production of a
graviton associated with a Z boson is investigated. No statistically
significant hints for the existence of these effects are found and lower limits
in excess of 1 TeV are derived on the scale of this new theory of gravity
Inhibition of Notch3 signalling induces rhabdomyosarcoma cell differentiation promoting p38 phosphorylation and p21Cip1 expression and hampers tumour cell growth in vitro and in vivo
Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a paediatric soft-tissue sarcoma arising from skeletal muscle precursors coexpressing markers of proliferation and differentiation. Inducers of myogenic differentiation suppress RMS tumourigenic phenotype. The Notch target gene HES1 is upregulated in RMS and prevents tumour cell differentiation in a Notch-dependent manner. However, Notch receptors regulating this phenomenon are unknown. In agreement with data in RMS primary tumours, we show here that the Notch3 receptor is overexpressed in RMS cell lines versus normal myoblasts. Notch3-targeted downregulation in RMS cells induces hyper-phosphorylation of p38 and Akt essential for myogenesis, resulting in the differentiation of tumour cells into multinucleated myotubes expressing Myosin Heavy Chain. These phenomena are associated to a marked decrease in HES1 expression, an increase in p21Cip1 level and the accumulation of RMS cells in the G1 phase. HES1-forced overexpression in RMS cells reverses, at least in part, the pro-differentiative effects of Notch3 downregulation. Notch3 depletion also reduces the tumourigenic potential of RMS cells both in vitro and in vivo. These results indicate that downregulation of Notch3 is sufficient to force RMS cells into completing a correct full myogenic program providing evidence that it contributes, partially through HES1 sustained expression, to their malignant phenotype. Moreover, they suggest Notch3 as a novel potential target in human RMS
ATHENA detector proposal - a totally hermetic electron nucleus apparatus proposed for IP6 at the Electron-Ion Collider
ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges
The state of play of blockchain technology in the financial services sector: A systematic literature review
The modern trends of digitalization have completely transformed and reshaped business practices, whole businesses, and even a number of industries. Blockchain technology is believed to be the latest advancement in industries such as the financial sector, where trust is of prime significance. Blockchain technology is a decentralized and coded security system which provides the capability for new digital services and platforms to be created through this emerging technology. This research presents a systematic review of scholarly articles on blockchain technology in the financial sector. We commenced by considering 227 articles and subsequently filtered this list down to 87 articles. From this, we present a classification framework that has three dimensions: blockchain-enabled financial benefits, challenges, and functionality. This research identifies implications for future research and practice within the blockchain paradigm
