The objective of this work was to characterize the in vitro development of 'Ouro' banana after polyploidization with antimitotics. Shoot apexes were subjected to the following treatments for 24 and 48 hours: amiprophos-methyl (APM), at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 60 µmol L-1; caffeine, at 3, 6, 9, and 12 g L-1; and colchicine, at 2.5 mmol L-1. Survival, number of shoots, main shoot height, and number of roots were evaluated. The intermediary concentrations were the most promising at both exposure times for APM and at 24 hours for caffeine. The highest concentrations of APM and caffeine negatively affect the in vitro development of the shoot apexes.O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o desenvolvimento in vitro de bananeira 'Ouro' após poliploidização com antimitóticos. Iridoids are secondary metabolites with several biological activities. They are often found in species of the genus Tabebuia Gomes ex A.P. de Candolle. Tabebuia aurea (Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook. F. ex S. Moore, Bignoniaceae, is used to treat snake bites in traditional medicine. This study aimed to isolate the specioside - an the iridoid glycoside - from T. aurea, as well as investigate its potential biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antibiofilm, cytotoxic, anti-Trichomonas vaginalis and antitrypanosomal activities. Specioside inhibited leucocyte recruitment into the peritoneal cavity in mice injected with carrageenan, data that demonstrated its anti-inflammatory potential. However, the additional evaluated biological properties were negligible

Search for pair-produced resonances decaying to jet pairs in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV

Results are reported of a general search for pair production of heavy resonances decaying to pairs of hadronic jets in events with at least four jets. The study is based on up to 19.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. Limits are determined on the production of scalar top quarks (top squarks) in the framework of R-parity violating supersymmetry and on the production of color-octet vector bosons (colorons). First limits at the LHC are placed on top squark production for two scenarios. The first assumes decay to a bottom quark and a light-flavor quark and is excluded for masses between 200 and 385 GeV, and the second assumes decay to a pair of light-flavor quarks and is excluded for masses between 200 and 350 GeV at 95% confidence level. Previous limits on colorons decaying to light-flavor quarks are extended to exclude masses from 200 to 835 GeV

Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, ventilation management, and outcomes in invasively ventilated intensive care unit patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome: a pooled analysis of four observational studies

Background: Geoeconomic variations in epidemiology, the practice of ventilation, and outcome in invasively ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain unexplored. In this analysis we aim to address these gaps using individual patient data of four large observational studies. Methods: In this pooled analysis we harmonised individual patient data from the ERICC, LUNG SAFE, PRoVENT, and PRoVENT-iMiC prospective observational studies, which were conducted from June, 2011, to December, 2018, in 534 ICUs in 54 countries. We used the 2016 World Bank classification to define two geoeconomic regions: middle-income countries (MICs) and high-income countries (HICs). ARDS was defined according to the Berlin criteria. Descriptive statistics were used to compare patients in MICs versus HICs. The primary outcome was the use of low tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) for the first 3 days of mechanical ventilation. Secondary outcomes were key ventilation parameters (tidal volume size, positive end-expiratory pressure, fraction of inspired oxygen, peak pressure, plateau pressure, driving pressure, and respiratory rate), patient characteristics, the risk for and actual development of acute respiratory distress syndrome after the first day of ventilation, duration of ventilation, ICU length of stay, and ICU mortality. Findings: Of the 7608 patients included in the original studies, this analysis included 3852 patients without ARDS, of whom 2345 were from MICs and 1507 were from HICs. Patients in MICs were younger, shorter and with a slightly lower body-mass index, more often had diabetes and active cancer, but less often chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure than patients from HICs. Sequential organ failure assessment scores were similar in MICs and HICs. Use of LTVV in MICs and HICs was comparable (42\ub74% vs 44\ub72%; absolute difference –1띩 [–9띘 to 6뜑] p=0띧; data available in 3174 [82%] of 3852 patients). The median applied positive end expiratory pressure was lower in MICs than in HICs (5 [IQR 5–8] vs 6 [5–8] cm H2O; p=0뜀11). ICU mortality was higher in MICs than in HICs (30\ub75% vs 19\ub79%; p=0뜀04; adjusted effect 16띁% [95% CI 9띒–23띒]; p<0뜀01) and was inversely associated with gross domestic product (adjusted odds ratio for a US$10 000 increase per capita 0란 [95% CI 0띵–0랆]; p<0뜀01). Interpretation: Despite similar disease severity and ventilation management, ICU mortality in patients without ARDS is higher in MICs than in HICs, with a strong association with country-level economic status. Description and performance of track and primary-vertex reconstruction with the CMS tracker

Get PDF
A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For tbar t events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average track-reconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of pT > 0.9GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of |η| < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < |η| < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of pT = 100GeV emitted at |η| < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in pT, and respectively, 10μm and 30μm in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10–12μm in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung
