Multi-Channel Inverse Scattering Problem on the Line: Thresholds and Bound States
We consider the multi-channel inverse scattering problem in one-dimension in
the presence of thresholds and bound states for a potential of finite support.
Utilizing the Levin representation, we derive the general Marchenko integral
equation for N-coupled channels and show that, unlike to the case of the radial
inverse scattering problem, the information on the bound state energies and
asymptotic normalization constants can be inferred from the reflection
coefficient matrix alone. Thus, given this matrix, the Marchenko inverse
scattering procedure can provide us with a unique multi-channel potential. The
relationship to supersymmetric partner potentials as well as possible
applications are discussed. The integral equation has been implemented
numerically and applied to several schematic examples showing the
characteristic features of multi-channel systems. A possible application of the
formalism to technological problems is briefly discussed.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference

Iron and bismuth bound human serum transferrin reveals a partially-opened conformation in the N-lobe
Human serum transferrin (hTF) binds Fe(III) tightly but reversibly, and delivers it to cells via a receptor-mediated endocytosis process. The metal-binding and release result in significant conformational changes of the protein. Here, we report the crystal structures of diferric-hTF (Fe N Fe C-hTF) and bismuth-bound hTF (Bi N Fe C-hTF) at 2.8 and 2.4 Ă
resolutions respectively. Notably, the N-lobes of both structures exhibit unique 'partially-opened' conformations between those of the apo-hTF and holo-hTF. Fe(III) and Bi(III) in the N-lobe coordinate to, besides anions, only two (Tyr95 and Tyr188) and one (Tyr188) tyrosine residues, respectively, in contrast to four residues in the holo-hTF. The C-lobe of both structures are fully closed with iron coordinating to four residues and a carbonate. The structures of hTF observed here represent key conformers captured in the dynamic nature of the transferrin family proteins and provide a structural basis for understanding the mechanism of metal uptake and release in transferrin families. © 2012 Macmillan Publishers Limited. The development and assessment of a scale to measure the experience of an anorexic voice in anorexia nervosa
The anorexic voice (AV) is defined as a critical internal dialogue which has been implicated in the
development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Systematic research to explore this further
requires a valid and reliable measurement tool. This study aimed to develop and assess the validity of
the Experience of an Anorexic VoicE Questionnaire (EAVE-Q). EAVE-Q items were developed and
checked for face and content validity through cognitive interviews with seven individuals diagnosed
with AN. Participants with a diagnosis of AN (N = 148) completed the EAVE-Q, sociodemographic
questions and measures of mood and quality of life to assess internal consistency and construct

validity. Forty-nine participants completed the EAVE-Q twice more to assess test-retest reliability.
The EAVE-Q had good face and content validity and good acceptability. Principal axis factoring
resulted in an 18-item scale organised into five domains with high internal consistency (α = .70 to α
= .85). Domains correlated significantly with eating disorder symptoms, psychological distress and
quality of life. The EAVE-Q did not discriminate between participants on the basis of body mass index.
Test-retest reliability was moderate. Although the factor structure of the EAVE-Q requires replication
in other AN samples, the EAVE-Q is the first measure of a critical internal dialogue in AN. It is hoped
that it will aid future research to increase understanding of AN and the continued development of
person-centred treatments
Distribution of Major Health Risks: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study
BACKGROUND: Most analyses of risks to health focus on the total burden of their aggregate effects. The distribution of risk-factor-attributable disease burden, for example by age or exposure level, can inform the selection and targeting of specific interventions and programs, and increase cost-effectiveness. METHODS AND FINDINGS: For 26 selected risk factors, expert working groups conducted comprehensive reviews of data on risk-factor exposure and hazard for 14 epidemiological subregions of the world, by age and sex. Age-sex-subregion-population attributable fractions were estimated and applied to the mortality and burden of disease estimates from the World Health Organization Global Burden of Disease database. Where possible, exposure levels were assessed as continuous measures, or as multiple categories. The proportion of risk-factor-attributable burden in different population subgroups, defined by age, sex, and exposure level, was estimated. For major cardiovascular risk factors (blood pressure, cholesterol, tobacco use, fruit and vegetable intake, body mass index, and physical inactivity) 43%â61% of attributable disease burden occurred between the ages of 15 and 59 y, and 87% of alcohol-attributable burden occurred in this age group. Most of the disease burden for continuous risks occurred in those with only moderately raised levels, not among those with levels above commonly used cut-points, such as those with hypertension or obesity. Of all disease burden attributable to being underweight during childhood, 55% occurred among children 1â3 standard deviations below the reference population median, and the remainder occurred among severely malnourished children, who were three or more standard deviations below median. CONCLUSIONS: Many major global risks are widely spread in a population, rather than restricted to a minority. Population-based strategies that seek to shift the whole distribution of risk factors often have the potential to produce substantial reductions in disease burden
Microflares and the Statistics of X-ray Flares
This review surveys the statistics of solar X-ray flares, emphasising the new
views that RHESSI has given us of the weaker events (the microflares). The new
data reveal that these microflares strongly resemble more energetic events in
most respects; they occur solely within active regions and exhibit
high-temperature/nonthermal emissions in approximately the same proportion as
major events. We discuss the distributions of flare parameters (e.g., peak
flux) and how these parameters correlate, for instance via the Neupert effect.
We also highlight the systematic biases involved in intercomparing data
representing many decades of event magnitude. The intermittency of the
flare/microflare occurrence, both in space and in time, argues that these
discrete events do not explain general coronal heating, either in active
regions or in the quiet Sun.Comment: To be published in Space Science Reviews (2011
Measurement of the cross section for isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at âs=13 TeV using the ATLAS detector
The dynamics of isolated-photon production in association with a jet in protonâproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fbâ1. Photons are required to have transverse energies above 125 GeV. Jets are identified using the anti- algorithm with radius parameter and required to have transverse momenta above 100 GeV. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet cross sections are presented as functions of the leading-photon transverse energy, the leading-jet transverse momentum, the azimuthal angular separation between the photon and the jet, the photonâjet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photonâjet centre-of-mass system. Tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Jetphox and Sherpa are compared to the measurements
