An assessment of the level of knowledge of secondary school students from the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, regarding Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and prophylactic vaccinations/ Uma avaliação do nível de conhecimento de estudantes do ensino médio do estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, sobre o Papilomavírus Humano (HPV) e as vacinas profiláticas
The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of high school students about HPV and their awareness that a vaccine is available as prophylactic treatment. Nine hundred and eighty-six students were surveyed—the gender distribution being 61.5% female and 38.5% male. Of those surveyed, 67.1% said they had heard of HPV, but only 53.3% of those familiar with the virus knew a prophylactic treatment was available. Female students knew more about HPV than did their male counterparts (71.6% v. 60%), consequently fewer males knew of the vaccine (58.3% v. 50.7%). The students’ acceptance of the HPV vaccine as prophylactic treatment was correlated with both prior knowledge of the virus and the vaccine. Therefore, the study concluded that it is necessary to increase public awareness about HPV and with the availability of a the vaccine as preventative treatment. That is important due to a great level of resistance to vaccination in several states of Brazil. This study highlights the need for new public health policies.
Intravenous human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cell administration in models of moderate and severe intracerebral hemorrhage
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is as a life-threatening condition that can occur in young adults, often causing long-term disability. Recent preclinical data suggests mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-based therapies as promising options to minimize brain damage after ICH. However, therapeutic evidence and mechanistic insights are still limited, particularly when compared to other disorders such as ischemic stroke. Herein, we employed a model of collagenase-induced ICH in young adult rats to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of an intravenous injection of human umbilical cord Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs). Two doses of collagenase were used to cause moderate or severe hemorrhages. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that animals treated with hUC-MSCs after moderate ICH had smaller residual hematoma volumes than vehicle-treated rats, whereas the cell therapy failed to decrease the hematoma volume in animals with a severe ICH. Functional assessments (rotarod and elevated body swing tests) were performed for up to 21 days after ICH. Enduring neurological impairments were seen only in animals subjected to severe ICH, but the cell therapy did not induce statistically significant improvements in the functional recovery. The biodistribution of Technetium-99m-labeled hUC-MSCs was also evaluated, showing that most cells were found in organs such as the spleen and lungs 24 h after transplantation. Nevertheless, it was possible to detect a weak signal in the brain, which was higher in the ipsilateral hemisphere of rats subjected to a severe ICH. These data indicate that hUC-MSCs have moderately beneficial effects in cases of less severe brain hemorrhages in rats by decreasing the residual hematoma volume, and that optimization of the therapy is still necessary
Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC
Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
New records of fishes for the Vitória-Trindade Chain, southwestern Atlantic
Oceanic islands and seamounts play an important role on the origin and maintenance of biodiversity, however, these environments are still poorly understood. Here we report 15 new records of reef fish species for the Davis Seamount, Trindade Island and Martin Vaz Archipelago, in the Vitoria-Trindade Chain (VTC). Such isolated sites are among the last frontier for shallow reef exploration in the South Atlantic, and more scientific effort is needed to better understand their biogeography and to help in conservation efforts
Fish Biodiversity of the Vitória-Trindade Seamount Chain, Southwestern Atlantic: An Updated Database

Despite a strong increase in research on seamounts and oceanic islands ecology and biogeography, many basic aspects of their biodiversity are still unknown. In the southwestern Atlantic, the Vitória-Trindade Seamount Chain (VTC) extends ca. 1,200 km offshore the Brazilian continental shelf, from the Vitória seamount to the oceanic islands of Trindade and Martin Vaz. For a long time, most of the biological information available regarded its islands. Our study presents and analyzes an extensive database on the VTC fish biodiversity, built on data compiled from literature and recent scientific expeditions that assessed both shallow to mesophotic environments. A total of 273 species were recorded, 211 of which occur on seamounts and 173 at the islands. New records for seamounts or islands include 191 reef fish species and 64 depth range extensions. The structure of fish assemblages was similar between islands and seamounts, not differing in species geographic distribution, trophic composition, or spawning strategies. Main differences were related to endemism, higher at the islands, and to the number of endangered species, higher at the seamounts. Since unregulated fishing activities are common in the region, and mining activities are expected to drastically increase in the near future (carbonates on seamount summits and metals on slopes), this unique biodiversity needs urgent attention and management.
</div
