    Magnetic response and electronic states of well defined Graphene/Fe/Ir(111) heterostructure

    We investigate a well defined heterostructure constituted by magnetic Fe layers sandwiched between graphene (Gr) and Ir(111). The challenging task to avoid Fe-C solubility and Fe-Ir intermixing has been achieved with atomic controlled Fe intercalation at moderate temperature below 500 K. Upon intercalation of a single ordered Fe layer in registry with the Ir substrate, an intermixing of the Gr bands and Fe d states breaks the symmetry of the Dirac cone, with a downshift in energy of the apex by about 3 eV, and well-localized Fe intermixed states induced in the energy region just below the Fermi level. First principles electronic structure calculations show a large spin splitting of the Fe states, resulting in a majority spin channel almost fully occupied and strongly hybridized with Gr π states. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism on the Gr/Fe/Ir heterostructure reveals an ordered spin configuration with a ferromagnetic response of Fe layer(s), with enhanced spin and orbital configurations with respect to the bcc-Fe bulk values. The magnetization switches from a perpendicular easy magnetization axis when the Fe single layer is lattice matched with the Ir(111) surface to a parallel one when the Fe thin film is almost commensurate with graphene

    FePc Adsorption on the Moir\'e Superstructure of Graphene Intercalated with a Co Layer

    The moir\'e superstructure of graphene grown on metals can drive the assembly of molecular architectures, as iron-phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules, allowing for the production of artificial molecular configurations. A detailed analysis of the Gr/Co interaction upon intercalation (including a modelling of the resulting moir\'e pattern) is performed here by density functional theory, which provides an accurate description of the template as a function of the corrugation parameters. The theoretical results are a preliminary step to describe the interaction process of the FePc molecules adsorption on the Gr/Co system. Core level photoemission and absorption spectroscopies have been employed to control the preferential adsorption regions of the FePc on the graphene moir\'e superstructure and the interaction of the central Fe ion with the underlying Co. Our results show that upon molecular adsorption the distance of C atoms from the Co template mainly drives the strength of the molecules-substrate interaction, thereby allowing for locally different electronic properties within the corrugated interface.Comment: This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in J.     L' impatto del COVID-19 sull'economia. 10 proposte per la ripartenza. Un'analisi fondata sullo studio della provincia di Pisa.

    Il presente lavoro, ultimato a inizio luglio 2020, e' il frutto della collaborazione di un gruppo di docenti e ricercatori che operano nei Dipartimenti di Economia e Management, Giurisprudenza e Scienze Politiche dell’Universita' di Pisa. Nato sulla base di una richiesta della Prefettura di Pisa all’Ateneo pisano in piena emergenza sanitaria, esso si propone lo scopo di fornire un’analisi degli effetti che l’emergenza COVID-19 ha avuto sul tessuto economico e sociale della provincia di Pisa e, alla luce dei risultati ottenuti, effettuare alcune “proposte per la ripartenza” per i prossimi mesi. Il convincimento degli autori che questo contributo di analisi e proposte, ancorche' riguardante la realta' territoriale della provincia di Pisa, possa avere una qualche utilita' anche per altre realta' provinciali e regionali, nonche' per quella nazionale. La ragione di tale convinzione e' duplice. Da un lato, l’approccio utilizzato, basato sulla multidisciplinarieta' e sul coinvolgimento delle realtà socio-economiche e istituzionali del territorio, rappresenta un metodo essenziale e generale per la piena comprensione di una realta' nuova e assai complessa quale quella derivante dall’emergenza COVID-19. Gli autori, provenienti da settori scientifici diversi quali l’ambito aziendale, economico, statistico, giuridico e sociolopsicologico, sono stati i primi a rendersi conto di quanto tale metodo di “messa a sistema” delle informazioni e degli attori economici e istituzionali della provincia fosse cruciale, ancorche' inusuale rispetto al carattere tipicamente specialistico delle ricerche in ambito accademico. Dall’altro lato, le proposte contenute nel lavoro, e che sono riportate in modo sintetico val termine di questa introduzione, sono il frutto dell’analisi quantitativa e qualitativa contenuta nei primi capitoli e rappresentano un esempio di come le scienze sociali possano fornire una base informativa essenziale per processi decisionali basati sui fatti (quelli che in ambito scientifico vengono definiti “evidenze empiriche”). In altre parole, le proposte hanno valenza generale, in quanto mettono in evidenza problemi e ipotizzano soluzioni che sono comuni a tutto il territorio nazionale. Il lavoro, organizzato come segue. Il primo capitolo presenta un’analisi strutturalee dinamica dell’economia della provincia di Pisa nel periodo precedente alla crisi sanitaria. Il secondo capitolo contiene una lettura dell’impatto economico, sociale e sanitario dell’emergenza COVID-19 e delle misure di contrasto messe in campo dal governo nei mesi iniziali della crisi (marzo-giugno 2020). Il terzo capitolo contiene un approfondimento dell’analisi economico-aziendale svolta. L’impatto del COVID-19 sull’economia alcuni settori emersi come rilevanti per l’economia provinciale. Il quarto capitolo svolge riflessioni e proposte in ambito giuridico, il quinto capitolo chiude il lavoro presentando alcune proposte di policy.     Prediction of arterial pressure increase after fluid challenge

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mean arterial pressure above 65 mmHg is recommended for critically ill hypotensive patients whereas they do not benefit from supranormal cardiac output values. In this study we investigated if the increase of mean arterial pressure after volume expansion could be predicted by cardiovascular and renal variables. This is a relevant topic because unnecessary positive fluid balance increases mortality, organ dysfunction and Intensive Care Unit length of stay.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty-six hypotensive patients (mean arterial pressure < 65 mmH) received a fluid challenge with hydroxyethyl starch. Patients were excluded if they had active bleeding and/or required changes in vasoactive agents infusion rate in the previous 30 minutes. Responders were defined by the increase of mean arterial pressure value to over 65 mmHg or by more than 20% with respect to the value recorded before fluid challenge. Measurements were performed before and at one hour after the end of fluid challenge.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Twenty-two patients (61%) increased arterial pressure after volume expansion. Baseline heart rate, arterial pressure, central venous pressure, central venous saturation, central venous to arterial PCO<sub>2 </sub>difference, lactate, urinary output, fractional excretion of sodium and urinary sodium/potassium ratio were similar between responder and non-responder. Only 7 out of 36 patients had valuable dynamic indices and then we excluded them from analysis. When the variables were tested as predictors of responders, they showed values of areas under the ROC curve ranging between 0.502 and 0.604. Logistic regression did not reveal any association between variables and responder definition.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Fluid challenge did not improve arterial pressure in about one third of hypotensive critically ill patients. Cardiovascular and renal variables did not enable us to predict the individual response to volume administration.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov: <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00721604">NCT00721604</a>.</p

Productivity of cooperative in Pelalawan was highly but efficiency still low. Profit and income were highly, even liquidity of cooperative very high, and solvability was good

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

    Impacts of the Tropical Pacific/Indian Oceans on the Seasonal Cycle of the West African Monsoon

    The current consensus is that drought has developed in the Sahel during the second half of the twentieth century as a result of remote effects of oceanic anomalies amplified by local land–atmosphere interactions. This paper focuses on the impacts of oceanic anomalies upon West African climate and specifically aims to identify those from SST anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Oceans during spring and summer seasons, when they were significant. Idealized sensitivity experiments are performed with four atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). The prescribed SST patterns used in the AGCMs are based on the leading mode of covariability between SST anomalies over the Pacific/Indian Oceans and summer rainfall over West Africa. The results show that such oceanic anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Ocean lead to a northward shift of an anomalous dry belt from the Gulf of Guinea to the Sahel as the season advances. In the Sahel, the magnitude of rainfall anomalies is comparable to that obtained by other authors using SST anomalies confined to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The mechanism connecting the Pacific/Indian SST anomalies with West African rainfall has a strong seasonal cycle. In spring (May and June), anomalous subsidence develops over both the Maritime Continent and the equatorial Atlantic in response to the enhanced equatorial heating. Precipitation increases over continental West Africa in association with stronger zonal convergence of moisture. In addition, precipitation decreases over the Gulf of Guinea. During the monsoon peak (July and August), the SST anomalies move westward over the equatorial Pacific and the two regions where subsidence occurred earlier in the seasons merge over West Africa. The monsoon weakens and rainfall decreases over the Sahel, especially in August.Peer reviewe

    Search for stop and higgsino production using diphoton Higgs boson decays

    Results are presented of a search for a "natural" supersymmetry scenario with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. It is assumed that only the supersymmetric partners of the top-quark (stop) and the Higgs boson (higgsino) are accessible. Events are examined in which there are two photons forming a Higgs boson candidate, and at least two b-quark jets. In 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded in the CMS experiment, no evidence of a signal is found and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are set, excluding the stop mass below 360 to 410 GeV, depending on the higgsino mass

    Search for anomalous production of events with three or more leptons in pp collisions at √s = 8TeV

The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5fb-1 of proton-proton collisions with center-of-mass energy s=8TeV, was collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2012. The data are divided into exclusive categories based on the number of leptons and their flavor, the presence or absence of an opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pair (OSSF), the invariant mass of the OSSF pair, the presence or absence of a tagged bottom-quark jet, the number of identified hadronically decaying τ leptons, and the magnitude of the missing transverse energy and of the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta. The numbers of observed events are found to be consistent with the expected numbers from standard model processes, and limits are placed on new-physics scenarios that yield multilepton final states. In particular, scenarios that predict Higgs boson production in the context of supersymmetric decay chains are examined. We also place a 95% confidence level upper limit of 1.3% on the branching fraction for the decay of a top quark to a charm quark and a Higgs boson (t→cH), which translates to a bound on the left- and right-handed top-charm flavor-violating Higgs Yukawa couplings, λtcH and λctH, respectively, of |λtcH|2+|λctH|2<0.21
