Protectionist Responses to the Crisis: Global Trends and Implications
In this paper we take a systematic look at recent trends in global protectionism and at the potential implications of a protectionist backlash for economic growth, using results from the recent economic literature and new model simulations. We find that there has so far been a moderate increase in actual protectionist measures to restrict trade through tariff and non-tariff barriers. At the same time, evidence from surveys shows that public pressure for more economic protection has been mounting since the mid-2000s, and has possibly intensified since the start of the financial crisis. However, no World Trade Organization (WTO) member has retreated into widespread trade restrictions or protectionism to date. Our model-based simulations suggest that the impairment of the global flow of trade would hamper the recovery from the crisis, as well as the long-term growth of the global economy. At the same time, it is unlikely that protectionism would help to correct existing current account imbalances. Moreover, the countries implementing protectionist measures should expect a deterioration of their international competitiveness, which would further affect the potential for longer-term real GDP growth.Protectionism ; trade ; financial crisis ; competitiveness ; World Trade Organization ; global imbalances.
Testing Gaussianity on Archeops Data
A Gaussianity analysis using a goodness-of-fit test and the Minkowski
functionals on the sphere has been performed to study the measured Archeops
Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy data for a 143 GHz
Archeops bolometer. We consider large angular scales, greater than 1.8 degrees,
and a large fraction of the North Galactic hemisphere, around 16%, with a
galactic latitude b > 15 degrees.
The considered goodness-of-fit test, first proposed by Rayner & Best (1989),
has been applied to the data after a signal-to-noise decomposition. The three
Minkowski functionals on the sphere have been used to construct a chi-square
statistic using different thresholds. The first method has been calibrated
using simulations of Archeops data containing the CMB signal and instrumental
noise in order to check its asymptotic convergence. Two kind of maps produced
with two different map-making techniques (coaddition and Mirage) have been
analysed.
Archeops maps for both Mirage and coaddition map-making, have been found to
be compatible with Gaussianity. From these results we can exclude a dust and
atmospheric contamination larger than 7.8% (90% CL). Also the non-linear
coupling parameter f_{nl} can be constrained to be -800 < f_{nl} < 1100 at the
95% CL and on angular scales of 1.8 degrees. For comparison, the same method
has been applied to data from the NASA WMAP satellite in the same region of
sky. The 1-year and 3-year releases have been used. Results are compatible with
those obtained with Archeops, implying in particular an upper limit for f_{nl}

Palynostratigraphical review of the K–Pg boundary from the Ibero-Armorican Island: New data from the Maastrichtian dinosaur outcrop Veracruz 1 (Pyrenees, NE Iberian Peninsula)
The palynostratigraphy of the K-Pg boundary interval in SW Europe has been a subject of ongoing debate, despite numerous palynological studies in the region. To address this, we review previous publications and conduct analysis of new deposits to establish a palynostratigraphical chart. A total of 40 palynological studies within the Normapolles palynological province were reexamined to elucidate key taxa restricted to the Cretaceous (K-taxa), to the Maastrichtian-Danian interval (KPg-taxa) and those restricted to the Paleogene (Pg-taxa). Eventually, we propose 18 key taxa to differentiate a Maastrichtian from a Danian palynological assemblage within the Normapolles Province. Afterward, a palynostratigraphical analysis was carried out in Veracruz 1 (Aragonese Pyrenees), one of the more modern dinosaurbearing sites of Europe. The palynological assemblage corresponded to an upper Maastrichtian age and was composed by pteridophyte spores, gymnosperms, angiosperms, dinoflagellate cysts, algae, and fungal spores. It was predominated by angiosperm pollen (Liliaceae, post-Normapolles, and triporate pollen). The plant communities in Veracruz 1 seem to be characterized by plants from an open coastal forest prevailed by Liliaceae flowering herbs and Juglandaceae/Myricaceae dicotyledonous trees and shrubs thriving in temperate-warm paleoclimate. The Gondwanan botanical influence was also supported by the presence of Bacumorphomonocolpites sp., as this taxon was previously recorded in other upper Maastrichtian deposits from Europe.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Constraints on the non-linear coupling parameter fnl with the Archeops data
We present a Gaussianity analysis of the Archeops Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB) temperature anisotropy data maps at high resolution to constrain the
non-linear coupling parameter fnl characterising well motivated non-Gaussian
CMB models. We used the data collected by the most sensitive Archeops bolometer
at 143 GHz. The instrumental noise was carefully characterised for this
bolometer, and for another Archeops bolometer at 143 GHz used for comparison.
Angular scales from 27 arcmin to 1.8 degrees and a large fraction of the sky,
21 %, covering both hemispheres (avoiding pixels with Galactic latitude |b| <
15 degrees) were considered.
The three Minkowski functionals on the sphere evaluated at different
thresholds were used to construct a chi-squared statistics for both the
Gaussian and the non-Gaussian CMB models. The Archeops maps were produced with
the Mirage optimal map-making procedure from processed time ordered data. The
analysis is based on simulations of signal (Gaussian and non-Gaussian fnl CMB
models) and noise which were processed in the time domain using the Archeops
pipeline and projected on the sky using the Mirage optimal map-making
procedure.
The Archeops data were found to be compatible with Gaussianity after removal
of highly noisy pixels at high resolution. The non-linear coupling parameter
was constrained to -400 < fnl < 590 at 68% CL and -920 < fnl < 1075 at 95% CL,

The QUIJOTE experiment: project overview and first results
QUIJOTE (Q-U-I JOint TEnerife) is a new polarimeter aimed to characterize the
polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background and other Galactic and
extragalactic signals at medium and large angular scales in the frequency range
10-40 GHz. The multi-frequency (10-20~GHz) instrument, mounted on the first
QUIJOTE telescope, saw first light on November 2012 from the Teide Observatory
(2400~m a.s.l). During 2014 the second telescope has been installed at this
observatory. A second instrument at 30~GHz will be ready for commissioning at
this telescope during summer 2015, and a third additional instrument at 40~GHz
is now being developed. These instruments will have nominal sensitivities to
detect the B-mode polarization due to the primordial gravitational-wave

Humanized medium (h7H) allows long-term primary follicular thyroid cultures from human normal thyroid, benign neoplasm, and cancer
Mechanisms of thyroid physiology and cancer are principally studied in follicular cell lines. However, human thyroid cancer lines were found to be heavily contaminated by other sources, and only one supposedly normal-thyroid cell line, immortalized with SV40 antigen, is available. In primary culture, human follicular cultures lose their phenotype after passage. We hypothesized that the loss of the thyroid phenotype could be related to culture conditions in which human cells are grown in medium optimized for rodent culture, including hormones with marked differences in its affinity for the relevant rodent/human receptor.|The objective of the study was to define conditions that allow the proliferation of primary human follicular thyrocytes for many passages without losing phenotype.|Concentrations of hormones, transferrin, iodine, oligoelements, antioxidants, metabolites, and ethanol were adjusted within normal homeostatic human serum ranges. Single cultures were identified by short tandem repeats. Human-rodent interspecies contamination was assessed.|We defined an humanized 7 homeostatic additives medium enabling growth of human thyroid cultures for more than 20 passages maintaining thyrocyte phenotype. Thyrocytes proliferated and were grouped as follicle-like structures; expressed Na+/I- symporter, pendrin, cytokeratins, thyroglobulin, and thyroperoxidase showed iodine-uptake and secreted thyroglobulin and free T3. Using these conditions, we generated a bank of thyroid tumors in culture from normal thyroids, Grave's hyperplasias, benign neoplasms (goiter, adenomas), and carcinomas.|Using appropriate culture conditions is essential for phenotype maintenance in human thyrocytes. Planck 2015 results. XXIII. The thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect--cosmic infrared background correlation
We use Planck data to detect the cross-correlation between the thermal
Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect and the infrared emission from the galaxies that
make up the the cosmic infrared background (CIB). We first perform a stacking
analysis towards Planck-confirmed galaxy clusters. We detect infrared emission
produced by dusty galaxies inside these clusters and demonstrate that the
infrared emission is about 50% more extended than the tSZ effect. Modelling the
emission with a Navarro--Frenk--White profile, we find that the radial profile
concentration parameter is . This indicates
that infrared galaxies in the outskirts of clusters have higher infrared flux
than cluster-core galaxies. We also study the cross-correlation between tSZ and
CIB anisotropies, following three alternative approaches based on power
spectrum analyses: (i) using a catalogue of confirmed clusters detected in
Planck data; (ii) using an all-sky tSZ map built from Planck frequency maps;
and (iii) using cross-spectra between Planck frequency maps. With the three
different methods, we detect the tSZ-CIB cross-power spectrum at significance
levels of (i) 6 , (ii) 3 , and (iii) 4 . We model the
tSZ-CIB cross-correlation signature and compare predictions with the
measurements. The amplitude of the cross-correlation relative to the fiducial
model is . This result is consistent with
predictions for the tSZ-CIB cross-correlation assuming the best-fit
cosmological model from Planck 2015 results along with the tSZ and CIB scaling

Epidemiology of traumatic spinal cord injury in Galicia, Spain: trends over a 20-year period
[Abstract] Study design: Observational study with prospective and retrospective monitoring.
Objective: To describe the epidemiological and demographic characteristics of traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), and to analyze its epidemiological changes.
Setting: Unidad de Lesionados Medulares, Complejo Hospitalario Universitario A Coruña, in Galicia (Spain).
Methods: The study included patients with TSCI who had been hospitalized between January 1995 and December 2014. Relevant data were extracted from the admissions registry and electronic health record.
Results: A total of 1195 patients with TSCI were admitted over the specified period of time; 76.4% male and 23.6% female. Mean patient age at injury was 50.20 years. Causes of injury were falls (54.2%), traffic accidents (37%), sports/leisure-related accidents (3.5%) and other traumatic causes (5.3%). Mean patient age increased significantly over time (from 46.40 to 56.54 years), and the number of cases of TSCI related to traffic accidents decreased (from 44.5% to 23.7%), whereas those linked to falls increased (from 46.9% to 65.6%). The most commonly affected neurological level was the cervical level (54.9%), increasing in the case of levels C1–C4 over time, and the most frequent ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) grade was A (44.3%). The crude annual incidence rate was 2.17/100 000 inhabitants, decreasing significantly over time at an annual percentage rate change of −1.4%.
Conclusions: The incidence rate of TSCI tends to decline progressively. Mean patient age has increased over time and cervical levels C1–C4 are currently the most commonly affected ones. These epidemiological changes will eventually result in adjustments in the standard model of care for TSCI
Planck Intermediate Results. IX. Detection of the Galactic haze with Planck
Using precise full-sky observations from Planck, and applying several methods
of component separation, we identify and characterize the emission from the
Galactic "haze" at microwave wavelengths. The haze is a distinct component of
diffuse Galactic emission, roughly centered on the Galactic centre, and extends
to |b| ~35 deg in Galactic latitude and |l| ~15 deg in longitude. By combining
the Planck data with observations from the WMAP we are able to determine the
spectrum of this emission to high accuracy, unhindered by the large systematic
biases present in previous analyses. The derived spectrum is consistent with
power-law emission with a spectral index of -2.55 +/- 0.05, thus excluding
free-free emission as the source and instead favouring hard-spectrum
synchrotron radiation from an electron population with a spectrum (number
density per energy) dN/dE ~ E^-2.1. At Galactic latitudes |b|<30 deg, the
microwave haze morphology is consistent with that of the Fermi gamma-ray "haze"
or "bubbles," indicating that we have a multi-wavelength view of a distinct
component of our Galaxy. Given both the very hard spectrum and the extended
nature of the emission, it is highly unlikely that the haze electrons result
from supernova shocks in the Galactic disk. Instead, a new mechanism for
