The in vitro multiplication of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni cv. Eirete was carried out, with the aim of determining the best cultivation conditions for their establishment and emission of multiple buds, and of designing a strategy for their micropropagation. For the in vitro establishment, stem sections of 1.5 cm, with two knots, were selected as explants; they were pre-disinfected in Captán® solution (3.0 gr L1) in agitation for 15 minutes, followed by immersion in ethylic alcohol (70 % v/v) for 5 min. Later, under aseptic conditions, they were disinfected with NaClO (5% v/v) for 10 minutes, followed by two washes with sterilized distilled water (SDW). The explants were established in a vertical and horizontal position in the Murashige and Skoog basal medium (1962) supplemented with 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP), in concentrations of 0.0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg L1. The variables number of buds, vigor and size of these, were affected by the treatments. The Tukey means analysis showed significant differences in number of buds, directly proportional to the concentration of BAP, and inversely related to their aspect and vigor. Determining the appropriate concentration of BAP for the in vitro establishment and induction of multiple buds is the beginning of a strategy for the micropropagation of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni spp

El cultivo de gardenia jasminoides ellis en la región centro de Veracruz, Mexico

The central region of Veracruz, México, presents adequate agro-climatologic conditions for the cultivation of gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis). In recent years, an increase in the cultivated surface has been observed, although an impact from migration from productive zones has been shown, given that traditionally and historically the municipality of Fortín was considered the primary producer, and currently other municipalities where it is cultivated have been located, and they have become an important source of economic income. However, there is little information and studies about the cultivation of this species in México; therefore, the cultivation of gardenia was diagnosed and characterized in the central zone of Veracruz, through the technique of structured survey and questionnaire instrument considering socioeconomic factors that condition the gardenia system-product, with open and closed questions grouped into three sections that included: general information, technical and production aspects, and commercialization. To locate the producers, field research was carried out during the period of April-July 2015, and the number of producers was calculated through the “snowball” non-probabilistic sample. The distribution of gardenia cultivation in seven municipalities was determined, which indicates a growth in the production zone; this represents an opportunity for agricultural diversification of the study region

The study reports an outbreak of spontaneous poisoning by Perreyia flavipes in pigs. The outbreak occurred at the end of May 2009, in the municipality of Urubici, plateau of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The farm had about 50 pigs reared extensively and 10 animals got sick. The clinical signs were anorexia, apathy, constant movement of the head and hitting the ears, difficulty to walk and stagger, gnashing of teeth and agitation that increased with noise and movement nearby. At necropsy, pronounced hepatic lobular pattern and P. flavipes larvae mixed with the stomach content were observed. Microscopically, hepatocellular centrilobular to diffuse coagulation necrosis with severe congestion and hemorrhage was observed, with vacuolar degeneration in one or two layers of hepatocytes in the portal zones. Clinical signs, epidemiology and lesions in the pigs were characteristic of toxic hepatitis by larvae of P. flavipes

Serum magnesium and calcium levels in relation to ischemic stroke : Mendelian randomization study

ObjectiveTo determine whether serum magnesium and calcium concentrations are causally associated with ischemic stroke or any of its subtypes using the mendelian randomization approach.MethodsAnalyses were conducted using summary statistics data for 13 single-nucleotide polymorphisms robustly associated with serum magnesium (n = 6) or serum calcium (n = 7) concentrations. The corresponding data for ischemic stroke were obtained from the MEGASTROKE consortium (34,217 cases and 404,630 noncases).ResultsIn standard mendelian randomization analysis, the odds ratios for each 0.1 mmol/L (about 1 SD) increase in genetically predicted serum magnesium concentrations were 0.78 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.69-0.89; p = 1.3 7 10-4) for all ischemic stroke, 0.63 (95% CI 0.50-0.80; p = 1.6 7 10-4) for cardioembolic stroke, and 0.60 (95% CI 0.44-0.82; p = 0.001) for large artery stroke; there was no association with small vessel stroke (odds ratio 0.90, 95% CI 0.67-1.20; p = 0.46). Only the association with cardioembolic stroke was robust in sensitivity analyses. There was no association of genetically predicted serum calcium concentrations with all ischemic stroke (per 0.5 mg/dL [about 1 SD] increase in serum calcium: odds ratio 1.03, 95% CI 0.88-1.21) or with any subtype.ConclusionsThis study found that genetically higher serum magnesium concentrations are associated with a reduced risk of cardioembolic stroke but found no significant association of genetically higher serum calcium concentrations with any ischemic stroke subtype
