    Particle-yield modification in jet-like azimuthal di-hadron correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV

    The yield of charged particles associated with high-pTp_{\rm T} trigger particles (8<pT<158 < p_{\rm T} < 15 GeV/cc) is measured with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV relative to proton-proton collisions at the same energy. The conditional per-trigger yields are extracted from the narrow jet-like correlation peaks in azimuthal di-hadron correlations. In the 5% most central collisions, we observe that the yield of associated charged particles with transverse momenta pT>3p_{\rm T}> 3 GeV/cc on the away-side drops to about 60% of that observed in pp collisions, while on the near-side a moderate enhancement of 20-30% is found.Comment: 15 pages, 2 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 10, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/350

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bbˉb\bar{b} pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set

    We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb1^{-1}. We consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with originating from the decay of a bb quark. We place 95% credibility level upper limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction for several mass hypotheses between 90 and 150GeV/c2150 \mathrm{GeV}/c^2. For a Higgs boson mass of 125GeV/c2125 \mathrm{GeV}/c^2, the observed (expected) limit is 6.7 (3.6) times the standard model prediction.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let

    Measurement of the difference of CP-violating asymmetries in D0 -> K+K- and D0 ->pi+pi- decays at CDF

    We report a measurement of the difference (Delta Acp) between time-integrated CP--violating asymmetries in D0-> K+ K- and D0-> pi+pi- decays reconstructed in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to 9.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The strong decay D*+->D0 pi+ is used to identify the charm meson at production as D0 or anti-D0. We measure Delta Acp = [-0.62 +- 0.21 (stat) +- 0.10 (syst)] %, which differs from zero by 2.7 Gaussian standard deviations.This result supports similar evidence for CP violation in charm-quark decays obtained in proton-proton collisions.Comment: Phys.     De los trabajos realizados en el \ue1mbito de la investigaci\uf3n del proyecto nacional \u201cGlossari, dizionari, corpora: lessicologia e lessicografia delle lingue europee\u201d coordinado por G. Iamartino y, en lo referido a la lexicograf\ueda biling\ufce \uedtalo-espa\uf1ola, por F. San Vicente y de algunas intervenciones presentadas para el congreso organizado por J. Lillo (\u201cLessicografia e lessicologia dei linguaggi settoriali\u201d, Palermo 21-23/07/2007) surge el volumen que hoy presentamos: "Limes. Lexicograf\ueda y lexicolog\ueda de las lenguas de especialidad." Su contenido, como ilustra la "Introducci\uf3n", abarca principalmente cuestiones relativas a la historia de la terminograf\ueda y de la lexicograf\ueda as\ued como a las lenguas de especialidad, las marcas en general y la fraseolog\ueda en los diccionarios biling\ufces. Cabe se\uf1alar que la observaci\uf3n de lo lexicogr\ue1fico y de las relaciones interling\ufc\uedsticas e interculturales -tanto desde el punto de vista investigativo como did\ue1ctico- es rasgo com\ufan a todos los trabajos que constituyen esta obra. Seis son las lenguas observadas en los art\uedculos que recogemos (catal\ue1n, espa\uf1ol, franc\ue9s, gallego, ingl\ue9s e italiano), si bien el apartado hisp\ue1nico (catal\ue1n, espa\uf1ol, gallego) es mayoritario, la relaci\uf3n italiano-espa\uf1ol, la m\ue1s estudiada, y el espa\uf1ol, lengua y objeto de estudio preponderante.     Centrality Dependence of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Density at Midrapidity in Pb-Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV

    The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2: 76 TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor of 2 from peripheral (70%-80%) to central (0%-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions

    Is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) a new standard of care for type 1 respiratory failure in COVID-19 patients? A retrospective observational study of a dedicated COVID-19 CPAP service

    The aim of this case series is to describe and evaluate our experience of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to treat type 1 respiratory failure in patients with COVID-19. CPAP was delivered in negative pressure rooms in the newly repurposed infectious disease unit. We report a cohort of 24 patients with type 1 respiratory failure and COVID-19 admitted to the Royal Liverpool Hospital between 1 April and 30 April 2020. Overall, our results were positive; we were able to safely administer CPAP outside the walls of a critical care or high dependency unit environment and over half of patients (58%) avoided mechanical ventilation and a total of 19 out of 24 (79%) have survived and been discharged from our care

    An additional study of multi-muon events produced in p<span style="text-decoration:overline">p</span> collisions at &#8730;<span style="text-decoration:overline">s</span> = 1.96 TeV

    We present one additional study of multi-muon events produced at the Fermilab Tevatron collider and recorded by the CDF II detector. We use a data set acquired with a dedicated dimuon trigger and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.9 fb−1. We investigate the distribution of the azimuthal angle between the two trigger muons in events containing at least four additional muon candidates to test the compatibility of these events with originating from known QCD processes. We find that this distribution is markedly different from what is expected from such QCD processes and this observation strongly disfavors the possibility that multi-muon events result from an underestimate of the rate of misidentified muons in ordinary QCD events

    Harmonic decomposition of two particle angular correlations in Pb\u2013Pb collisions at 1asNN = 2.76 TeV.

    Angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger (t) and associated (a) particles are measured by the ALICE experiment in Pb\u2013Pb collisions at 1asNN = 2.76 TeV for transverse momenta 0.25 p(aT) . The shapes of the pair correlation distributions are studied in a variety of collision centrality classes between 0 and 50% of the total hadronic cross section for particles in the pseudorapidity interval |\u3b7| 0.8, and are referred to as \u201clong-range correlations\u201d. Fourier components Vn 61 cos(n\u3c6) are extracted from the long-range azimuthal correlation functions. If particle pairs are correlated to one another through their individual correlation to a common symmetry plane, then the pair anisotropy Vn(p(tT) , p(aT) ) is fully described in terms of single-particle anisotropies vn(pT) as Vn(p(tT), p(aT)) = vn(p(tT)vn(paT). This expectation is tested for 1 64 n 64 5 by applying a global fit of all Vn(p(tT), p(aT) to obtain the best values vn{GF}(pT ). It is found that for 2 64 n 64 5, the fit agrees well with data up to p(aT) ~ 3\u20134 GeV/c, with a trend of increasing deviation as p(tT) and p(aT) are increased or as collisions become more peripheral. This suggests that no pair correlation harmonic can be described over the full 0.25 < pT < 15 GeV/c range using a single vn(pT) curve; such a description is however approximately possible for 2 64 n 64 5 when p(aT) <4 GeV/c. For the n = 1 harmonic, however, a single v1(pT) curve is not obtained even within the reduced range p(aT) <4 GeV/c
