Assessing How Pre-requisite Skills Affect Learning of Advanced Concepts
Students often struggle with advanced computing courses, and comparatively few studies have looked into the reasons for this. It seems that learners do not master the most basic concepts, or forget them between courses. If so, remedial practice could improve learning, but instructors rightly will not use scarce time for this without strong evidence. Based on personal observation, program tracing seems to be an important pre-requisite skill, but there is yet little research that provides evidence for this observation. To investigate this, our group will create theory-based assessments on how tracing knowledge affects learning of advanced topics, such as data structures, algorithms, and concurrency. This working group will identify relevant concepts in advanced courses, then conceptually analyze their pre-requisites and where an imagined student with some tracing difficulties would encounter barriers. The group will use this theory to create instructor-usable assessments for advanced topics that also identify issues caused by poor pre-requisite knowledge. These assessments may then be used at the start and end of advanced courses to evaluate to what extent students\u2019 difficulties with the advanced course originate from poor pre-requisite knowledge
Langevin Simulations of Two Dimensional Vortex Fluctuations: Anomalous Dynamics and a New -exponent
The dynamics of two dimensional (2D) vortex fluctuations are investigated
through simulations of the 2D Coulomb gas model in which vortices are
represented by soft disks with logarithmic interactions. The simulations
trongly support a recent suggestion that 2D vortex fluctuations obey an
intrinsic anomalous dynamics manifested in a long range 1/t-tail in the vortex
correlations. A new non-linear IV-exponent a, which is different from the
commonly used AHNS exponent, a_AHNS and is given by a = 2a_AHNS - 3, is
confirmed by the simulations. The results are discussed in the context of

Vortex dynamics for two-dimensional XY models
Two-dimensional XY models with resistively shunted junction (RSJ) dynamics
and time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) dynamics are simulated and it is
verified that the vortex response is well described by the Minnhagen
phenomenology for both types of dynamics. Evidence is presented supporting that
the dynamical critical exponent in the low-temperature phase is given by
the scaling prediction (expressed in terms of the Coulomb gas temperature
and the vortex renormalization given by the dielectric constant
) both for RSJ and TDGL
and that the nonlinear IV exponent a is given by a=z+1 in the low-temperature
phase. The results are discussed and compared with the results of other recent

Average Lattice Symmetry and Nanoscale Structural Correlations in Magnetoresistive Manganites
We report x-ray scattering studies of nanoscale structural correlations in
the paramagnetic phases of the perovskite manganites
La(CaSr)MnO,
LaSrMnO, and NdSrMnO. We find
that these correlations are present in the orthorhombic phase in
La(CaSr)MnO, but they disappear
abruptly at the orthorhombic-to-rhombohedral transition in this compound. The
orthorhombic phase exhibits increased electrical resistivity and reduced
ferromagnetic coupling, in agreement with the association of the nanoscale
correlations with insulating regions. In contrast, the correlations were not
detected in the two other compounds, which exhibit rhombohedral and tetragonal
phases. Based on these results, as well as on previously published work, we
propose that the local structure of the paramagnetic phase correlates strongly
with the average lattice symmetry, and that the nanoscale correlations are an
important factor distinguishing the insulating and the metallic phases in these

Intermediate inflation in Gauss-Bonnet braneworld
In this article we study an intermediate inflationary universe models using
the Gauss-Bonnet brane. General conditions required for these models to be
realizable are derived and discussed. We use recent astronomical observations

Is It Rational to Assume that Infants Imitate Rationally? A Theoretical Analysis and Critique
It has been suggested that preverbal infants evaluate the efficiency of others' actions (by applying a principle of rational action) and that they imitate others' actions rationally. The present contribution presents a conceptual analysis of the claim that preverbal infants imitate rationally. It shows that this ability rests on at least three assumptions: that infants are able to perceive others' action capabilities, that infants reason about and conceptually represent their own bodies, and that infants are able to think counterfactually. It is argued that none of these three abilities is in place during infancy. Furthermore, it is shown that the idea of a principle of rational action suffers from two fallacies. Differential Extracellular, but Similar Intracellular, Disposition of two Tenofovir Formulations in the Male Genital Tract
Background: The male genital tract (MGT) is a viral sanctuary and likely HIV reservoir; understanding MGT pharmacokinet-ics (PK) of antiretrovirals (ARVs) used for curative strategies is critical to eradication and cure. Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) is a tenofovir (TFV) formulation designed to maximize efficacy/minimize toxicity with unknown MGT PK. Methods: HIV-positive and HIV-negative men receiving TFV-based regimens provided six paired blood plasma (BP) and semen samples. Extracellular (TFV, TAF, emtricitabine [FTC]) drug concentrations in BP and seminal plasma (SP), and intracellular metabolite (IM) and endogenous nucleotide (EN) concentrations were measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and seminal mononuclear cells (SMCs). Exposure ratios for SP:BP, SMC:PBMC and IM:EN were calculated from PK parameters generated by noncompartmental analysis. HIV viral load was measured in BP and SP. Results: Sixteen HIV-positive (n=8, TDF/FTC; n=8, TAF/FTC) and eight HIV-negative (TDF/FTC) men provided samples. Median TFV SP:BP ratios differed between TDF and TAF (1.5 versus 7.4), due to lower TFV BP concentrations with TAF coupled with TFV SP concentrations similar to TDF. FTC SP:BP ratios were approximately 3. SMC concentrations of IMs and ENs were a fraction of PBMC concentrations (1–22%), though IM:EN ratios exceed a suggested protective threshold. Conclusions: TAF SP PK was unexpected. IM SMC concentrations were low relative to PBMC, as were EN concentrations, suggesting differences in cell phenotype and lineage in the MGT; these differences in phenotype and pharmacology may have an impact on selecting and dosing ARVs used in cure strategies
Azimuthal anisotropy of K0s and Lambda prduction at mid-rapidity from Au+Au collisions at root s = 130 GeV
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange
particles K0S, L and Lbar at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 130 GeV
at RHIC. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum of the produced
particles pt and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to pt
3.0 GeV/c. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v2
measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. The physics
implications of the pt integrated v2 magnitude as a function of particle mass

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
