Neurological Dysfunction in Coeliac Disease and Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity
OBJECTIVES: Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) refers to patients with primarily gastrointestinal symptoms
without enteropathy that symptomatically benefi t from gluten-free diet (GFD). Little is known about
its pathophysiology, propensity to neurological manifestations, and if these differ from patients with
coeliac disease (CD). We investigated the clinical and immunological characteristics of patients
presenting with neurological manifestations with CD and those with NCGS.
METHODS: We compared clinical, neurophysiological, and imaging data of patients with CD and NCGS
presenting with neurological dysfunction assessed and followed up regularly over a period of
20 years.
RESULTS: Out of 700 patients, 562 were included. Exclusion criteria included no bowel biopsy to confi rm
CD, no HLA type available, and failure to adhere to GFD. All patients presented with neurological
dysfunction and had circulating anti-gliadin antibodies. Out of 562 patients, 228 (41%) had
evidence of enteropathy (Group 1, CD) and 334 (59%) did not (Group 2, NCGS). The most common
neurological manifestations were cerebellar ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, and encephalopathy. There
was a greater proportion of patients with encephalopathy in Group 1 and with a greater proportion
of neuropathy in Group 2. The severity of ataxia did not differ between the two groups. Patients in
Group 1 had more severe neuropathy. All patients from both groups responded to gluten-free diet.
Anti-tissue transglutaminase (TG2) antibodies were found in 91% of patients in Group 1 and in
29% of patients in Group 2. Comparison between those patients in Group 2 with HLA-DQ2/DQ8 and
those without as well as those with positive TG2 compared with those with negative TG2 antibodies
identifi ed no differences within these subgroups. Serological positivity for TG6 antibodies was similar
in the two groups (67 and 60%).
CONCLUSIONS: The neurological manifestations of CD and NCGS are similar and equally responsive to a GFD
suggestive of common pathophysiological mechanisms

Landscape equivalent of the shoving model
It is shown that the shoving model expression for the average relaxation time
of viscous liquids follows largely from a classical "landscape" estimation of
barrier heights from curvature at energy minima. The activation energy involves
both instantaneous bulk and shear moduli, but the bulk modulus contributes less
than 8% to the temperature dependence of the activation energy. This reflects
the fact that the physics of the two models are closely related.Comment: 4 page
Delayed fracture healing and increased callus adiposity in a C57BL/6J Murine model of obesity-associated type 2 diabetes mellitus
Introduction: Impaired healing and non-union of skeletal fractures is a major public health problem, with morbidity exacerbated in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). DM is prevalent worldwide and affects approximately 25.8 million US adults, with >90% having obesity-related type 2 DM (T2DM). While fracture healing in type 1 DM (T1DM) has been studied using animal models, an investigation into delayed healing in an animal model of T2DM has not yet been performed. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice at 5 weeks of age were placed on either a control lean diet or an experimental high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks. A mid-diaphyseal open tibia fracture was induced at 17 weeks of age and a spinal needle was used for intra-medullary fixation. Mice were sacrificed at days 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, and 35 for micro-computed tomography (ÎźCT), histology-based histomorphometry and molecular analyses, and biomechanical testing. Results: HFD-fed mice displayed increased body weight and impaired glucose tolerance, both characteristic of T2DM. Compared to control mice, HFD-fed mice with tibia fractures showed significantly (p<0.001) decreased woven bone at day 28 by histomorphometry and significantly (p<0.01) decreased callus bone volume at day 21 by ÎźCT. Interestingly, fracture calluses contained markedly increased adiposity in HFD-fed mice at days 21, 28, and 35. HFD-fed mice also showed increased PPARÎł immunohistochemical staining at day 14. Finally, calluses from HFD-fed mice at day 35 showed significantly (p<0.01) reduced torsional rigidity compared to controls. Discussion: Our murine model of T2DM demonstrated delayed fracture healing and weakened biomechanical properties, and was distinctly characterized by increased callus adiposity. This suggests altered mesenchymal stem cell fate determination with a shift to the adipocyte lineage at the expense of the osteoblast lineage. The up-regulation of PPARÎł in fracture calluses of HFD-fed mice is likely involved in the proposed fate switching
Nucleation and growth of biomimetic apatite layers on 3D plotted biodegradable polymeric scaffolds : effect of static and dynamic coating conditions
Apatite layers were grown on the surface of newly developed starch/polycaprolactone (SPCL)-based scaffolds by a 3D plotting technology.
To produce the biomimetic coatings, a sodium silicate gel was used as nucleating agent, followed by immersion in a simulated
body fluid (SBF) solution. After growing a stable apatite layer for 7 days, the scaffolds were placed in SBF under static, agitated (80 strokes
min!1) and circulating flow perfusion (Q = 4 ml min!1; tR = 15 s) for up to 14 days. The materials were characterized by scanning
electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thin-film X-ray diffraction.
Cross-sections were obtained and the coating thickness was measured. The elemental composition of solution and coatings was monitored
by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy. After only 6 h of immersion in SBF it was possible to observe the formation of small
nuclei of an amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) layer. After subsequent SBF immersion from 7 to 14 days under static, agitated and
circulating flow perfusion conditions, these layers grew into bone-like nanocrystalline carbonated apatites covering each scaffold fiber
without compromising its initial morphology. No differences in the apatite composition/chemical structure were detectable between
the coating conditions. In case of flow perfusion, the coating thickness was significantly higher. This condition, besides mimicking better

Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of

Measurement of the Lambda(b) cross section and the anti-Lambda(b) to Lambda(b) ratio with Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda decays in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The Lambda(b) differential production cross section and the cross section
ratio anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) are measured as functions of transverse momentum
pt(Lambda(b)) and rapidity abs(y(Lambda(b))) in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7
TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are
based on Lambda(b) decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/Psi
Lambda, with the subsequent decays J/Psi to an opposite-sign muon pair and
Lambda to proton pion, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 1.9 inverse femtobarns. The product of the cross section times
the branching ratio for Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda versus pt(Lambda(b)) falls
faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of the cross section times the
branching ratio for pt(Lambda(b)) > 10 GeV and abs(y(Lambda(b))) < 2.0 is 1.06
+/- 0.06 +/- 0.12 nb, and the integrated cross section ratio for
anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) is 1.02 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09, where the uncertainties are
statistical and systematic, respectively.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Search for new physics in events with opposite-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (BSM) in final
states with a pair of opposite-sign isolated leptons accompanied by jets and
missing transverse energy. The search uses LHC data recorded at a
center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 inverse femtobarns. Two
complementary search strategies are employed. The first probes models with a
specific dilepton production mechanism that leads to a characteristic kinematic
edge in the dilepton mass distribution. The second strategy probes models of
dilepton production with heavy, colored objects that decay to final states
including invisible particles, leading to very large hadronic activity and
missing transverse energy. No evidence for an event yield in excess of the
standard model expectations is found. Upper limits on the BSM contributions to
the signal regions are deduced from the results, which are used to exclude a
region of the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric
extension of the standard model. Additional information related to detector
efficiencies and response is provided to allow testing specific models of BSM
