In this work, two commercialized anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), AMI-7001 and AF49R27, were applied in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) and compared with a novel AEM (PSEBS CM DBC, functionalized with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) to produce biohydrogen. The evaluation regarding the effect of using different AEMs was carried out using simple (acetate) and complex (mixture of acetate, butyrate and propionate to mimic dark fermentation effluent) substrates. The MECs equipped with various AEMs were assessed based on their electrochemical efficiencies, H2 generation capacities and the composition of anodic biofilm communities. pH imbalances, ionic losses and cathodic overpotentials were taken into consideration together with changes to substantial AEM properties (particularly ion-exchange capacity, ionic conductivity, area- and specific resistances) before and after AEMs were applied in the process to describe their potential impact on the behavior of MECs. It was concluded that the MECs which employed the PSEBS CM DBC membrane provided the highest H2 yield and lowest internal losses compared to the two other separators. Therefore, it has the potential to improve MECs

    Malignant melanoma of the liver

Autori prikazuju slučaj četrdeset-trogodišnje bolesnice, obrađivane zbog bolova desnog hemiabdomena, u trajanju dva mjeseca, i hepatomegalije. Glavni anamnestički podatak bila je dijagnoza malignog melanoma lijevog oka i enukleacije tog oka prije jedanaest godina. Patološki testovi jetrene funkcije, posebno povećane vrijednosti AST, ALT, gama GT, alkalne fosfataze; te scintigrafija, ultrazvuk i CT nisu bili dovoljni za postavljanje dijagnoze. Perkutornom biopsijom jetre, pod kontrolom CT-a, postavljena je definitivna dijagnoza: metastaza malignog melanoma. The case of a 43-year-old woman with two-month history of right hemiabdominal pain and hepatomegaly is presented. The main anamnestic data were the diagnosed left eye malignant melanoma and the enucleation of that eye 11 years ago. Abnormal results of the liver function tests, particularly elevated AST, ALT, gamma GT and alkaline phosphatase levels as well as scintiscan, ultrasound and CT could not provide a presumptive diagnosis. Percutaneous needle biopsy of the liver under CT control enabled the diagnosis of malignant melanoma metastases

Dissolved and gaseous nitrogen losses in forests controlled by soil nutrient stoichiometry

Global chronic nitrogen (N) deposition to forests can alleviate ecosystem N limitation, with potentially wide ranging consequences for biodiversity, carbon sequestration, soil and surface water quality, and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the ability to predict these consequences requires improved quantification of hard-to-measure N fluxes, particularly N gas loss and soil N retention. Here we combine a unique set of long-term catchment N budgets in the central Europe with ecosystem 15N data to reveal fundamental controls over dissolved and gaseous N fluxes in temperate forests. Stream leaching losses of dissolved N corresponded with nutrient stoichiometry of the forest floor, with stream N losses increasing as ecosystems progress towards phosphorus limitation, while soil N storage increased with oxalate extractable iron and aluminium content. Our estimates of soil gaseous losses based on 15N stocks averaged 2.5 ± 2.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1 and comprised 20% ± 14% of total N deposition. Gaseous N losses increased with forest floor N:P ratio and with dissolved N losses. Our relationship between gaseous and dissolved N losses was also able to explain previous 15N-based N loss rates measured in tropical and subtropical catchments, suggesting a generalisable response driven by nitrate (NO3−) abundance and in which the relative importance of dissolved N over gaseous N losses tended to increase with increasing NO3− export. Applying this relationship globally, we extrapolated current gaseous N loss flux from forests to be 8.9 Tg N yr−1, which represent 39% of current N deposition to forests worldwide

Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
