Igrejas evangélicas como máquinas eleitorais no Brasil

The article compares the relations of Brazilian religions with the political sphere based on two distinct plans: i) the political conceptions of the faithful, and ii) the electoral activities of churches. The main source of data is a national opinion poll conducted in 2016 by Instituto Datafolha. Here we seek to reconcile the sociological diagnosis of the advance of religious modernity, according to which religion in its traditional forms becomes more and more subject to the bricolage done by the faithful outside institutional regulations, with the confirmation of the growing power of the electoral influence of certain evangelical churches when compared with other religious institutions.O artigo compara as relações de religiões brasileiras com a esfera política a partir de dois planos distintos: o das concepções políticas dos fiéis e o da atuação eleitoreira das igrejas. Totally percutaneous valve replacement for severe aortic regurgitation in a degenerating bioprosthesis

Recently, the feasibility and safety of percutaneous aortic valve replacement (PAVR) has been reported in the treatment of degenerative aortic valve stenosis in patients at high-risk for surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR).1 However, so far this therapy has been limited to patients with severe stenosis of the native valve. Secularização em Antônio Flávio Pierucci: da contemporânea serventia de continuarmos acessando aquele velho sentido.

In this article we aim to affirm the importance of the reflections of Antônio Flávio Pierucci (1945-2012) both for sociology in general, when it is performed in an objectively and theoretically oriented manner, as well as for the sociology of religion in particular, especially when it comes to the controversial topic of secularization. To fulfill that intention, we have selected texts, articles, and book chapters published by the author in which we found the concept of secularization directly or indirectly mobilized. In addition, the academic and biographical trajectory of Flávio Pierucci was also utilized at some moments for a better explanation of the adjustments and shifts that the reflection on secularization passes through during his work. The article is divided into four main themes in which Flávio Pierucci mobilizes the topic of secularization: decline of Catholicism, detraditionalization, disenchantment of the world, and political sphere.Neste artigo pretendemos afirmar a importância das reflexões de Antônio Flávio Pierucci (1945-2012) tanto para a sociologia de um modo geral, quando quer ser feita de forma objetiva e teoricamente orientada, quanto para a sociologia da religião em específico, analisando as nuances de suas interpretações acerca do conceito de secularização. Com esse intuito, foi feita uma seleção de textos, artigos e capítulos de livro publicados pelo autor nos quais o conceito de secularização é acessado direta ou indiretamente. Além disso, a trajetória acadêmica e biográfica de Flávio Pierucci também foi recuperada em alguns momentos para uma melhor explicitação dos ajustes e deslocamentos pelos quais a reflexão sobre secularização passa em sua obra. O artigo é dividido em quatro eixos temáticos principais em meio aos quais o tema da secularização é mobilizado por Flávio Pierucci: declínio do catolicismo, destradicionalização, desencantamento do mundo e esfera política.

A pilot study of brisk walking in sedentary combination antiretroviral treatment (cART)- treated patients: benefit on soluble and cell inflammatory markers

Background: Chronic HIV infection is associated with low-level inflammation and increased risk of chronic diseases and mortality. The objective was to assess the effects of moderate intensity exercise on metabolic and inflammatory markers in HIV-infected treated persons. Methods: This was a pilot study enrolling cART-treated, sedentary persons with metabolic complications in a 12-week protocol, consisting of three sessions per week of 60 min brisk walking with (strength-walk group) or without (walk group) 30 min circuit-training. Assessments at baseline and week 12 (W12) included body morphometrics and total body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; lipid and glucose blood profile; plasma level of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), D-dimer, interleukin-18 (IL-18), soluble CD14, and CD38 and HLA-DR expression on CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells. Results: Forty-nine patients were included and 35 (71%) completed the program: 21 in the walk and 14 in the strength-walk group. At W12, significant improvements were observed of body mass index, waist and hip circumference, and total cholesterol both overall and in the walk group, and of LDL cholesterol in both training groups. In the whole group, significant reductions were observed in hsCRP, IL-6, D-dimer, IL-18, and of CD8 +/CD38+/HLA-DR+ cell frequencies. HsCRP and CD8+/CD38+/HLA-DR+ frequency decreased significantly in both training groups when examined separately whereas IL-6 and D-dimer in the walk group only. Conclusions: Brisk walking, with or without strength exercise, could improve lipid profile and inflammatory markers in chronic HIV infection

RNASEH1 Mutations Impair mtDNA Replication and Cause Adult-Onset Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy.

Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) is common in mitochondrial disorders and is frequently associated with multiple mtDNA deletions. The onset is typically in adulthood, and affected subjects can also present with general muscle weakness. The underlying genetic defects comprise autosomal-dominant or recessive mutations in several nuclear genes, most of which play a role in mtDNA replication. Next-generation sequencing led to the identification of compound-heterozygous RNASEH1 mutations in two singleton subjects and a homozygous mutation in four siblings. RNASEH1, encoding ribonuclease H1 (RNase H1), is an endonuclease that is present in both the nucleus and mitochondria and digests the RNA component of RNA-DNA hybrids. Unlike mitochondria, the nucleus harbors a second ribonuclease (RNase H2). All affected individuals first presented with CPEO and exercise intolerance in their twenties, and these were followed by muscle weakness, dysphagia, and spino-cerebellar signs with impaired gait coordination, dysmetria, and dysarthria. Ragged-red and cytochrome c oxidase (COX)-negative fibers, together with impaired activity of various mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes, were observed in muscle biopsies of affected subjects. Western blot analysis showed the virtual absence of RNase H1 in total lysate from mutant fibroblasts. By an in vitro assay, we demonstrated that altered RNase H1 has a reduced capability to remove the RNA from RNA-DNA hybrids, confirming their pathogenic role. Given that an increasing amount of evidence indicates the presence of RNA primers during mtDNA replication, this result might also explain the accumulation of mtDNA deletions and underscores the importance of RNase H1 for mtDNA maintenance.This work was supported by the Medical Research Council, the Pierfranco and Luisa Mariani Foundation, Telethon grant GGP11011, the Italian Ministry of Health (grant GR2010-2316392), and European Research Council advanced grant FP7-322424

Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
