Isolation and phylogenetic classification of culturable psychrophilic prokaryotes from the Collins glacier in the Antarctica

"Culturable psychrophilic prokaryotes were obtained of samples of glacier sediment, seaside mud, glacier melted ice, and Deschampsia antarctica rhizosphere from Collins glacier, Antarctica. The taxonomic classification was done by a culture-dependent molecular approach involving the Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis. Two hundred sixty colonies were successfully isolated and sub-cultivated under laboratory conditions. The analysis showed a bacterial profile dominated by Beta-proteobacteria (35.2%) followed by Gamma-proteobacteria (18.5%), Alpha-proteobacteria (16.6%), Gram-positive with high GC content (13%), Cytophaga–Flavobacterium–Bacteroides (13%) and Gram-positive with low GC content (3.7%). Eleven of the isolates have been reported previously and the others microorganisms remain uncharacterized. The isolated microorganisms here could be a potential source for biotechnological products, such as cold-active enzymes and secondary metabolites.

Raciocínio covariacional e seu papel no estudo da integral definida a partir da resolução de problemas

This study aims to analyze if there are descriptors associated with covariational reasoning in the processes of problems-solving related to definite integrals. In research about this subject, the presence of covariational reasoning is implicitly or explicitly identified, which suggests the need to know about the relationship between this type of reasoning and the resolution processes that involve the concept of definite integral. In this study, the theoretical construct of covariational reasoning was adopted, and a documentary research was carried out through a systematic review of research papers that addressed the study of the definite integral published during the last 8 years, according to four assessment indexes in Mathematics Education. As a result of the systematic review, four works were identified that address this concept through approximation or accumulation processes; in which is reported that the students made reference to: changes in the value of one quantity as occurring simultaneously with changes in the value of another; two variables continuously changing; and, a new element that result from the coordination of the values of two quantities that vary together, all descriptors of different levels of covariational reasoning. It is concluded that student’s reason covariationally during the resolution of problems related to the definite integral and it seems that the characteristics of their reasoning are related to success in the resolution process, an aspect that requires further investigation.El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar si existen descriptores asociados con un razonamiento covariacional en los procesos de resolución de problemas sobre la integral definida. En las investigaciones sobre este tema se identifica de forma implícita o explícita la presencia del razonamiento covariacional, lo que sugiere la necesidad de conocer sobre la relación entre este tipo de razonamiento y los procesos de resolución que involucran el concepto de integral definida. En este estudio se adoptó el constructo teórico de razonamiento covariacional y se llevó a cabo una investigación documental mediante una revisión sistemática de trabajos de investigación que abordaron el estudio de la integral definida y que fueron publicados durante los últimos ocho años, de acuerdo con cuatro índices de valoración en el área de Educación Matemática. Como resultado de la revisión sistemática, se identificaron cuatro trabajos que abordan este concepto mediante procesos de aproximación o acumulación; en ellos se reporta que los estudiantes hicieron referencia a: cambios en el valor de una cantidad como si ocurrieran simultáneamente con los cambios en el valor de otra; dos variables cambiando continuamente; y, un elemento que resulta de la coordinación de los valores de dos cantidades que varían juntas, todos descriptores de diferentes niveles de razonamiento covariacional. Se concluye que los estudiantes razonan covariacionalmente durante la resolución de problemas sobre la integral definida y parece que las características de su razonamiento están relacionadas con el éxito en el proceso de resolución, aspecto que requiere de mayor investigación.O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar se existem descritores associados ao raciocínio covariacional nos processos de resolução de problemas da integral definida. Nas pesquisas sobre este tópico se identificam de maneira implícita ou explicita a presença de raciocínio covariacional, o que sugere a necessidade de conhecer a relação entre este tipo de raciocínio e os processos de resolução que envolvem o conceito da integral definida. Neste estudo, foi adotada a construção teórico do raciocínio covariacional, e foi realizada uma pesquisa documental por meio de uma revisão sistemática de trabalhos de pesquisa que abordavam o estudo da integral definida e que foram publicados nos últimos 8 anos, de acordo com quatro índices de avaliação na área de Educação Matemática. Como resultado da revisão sistemática, foram identificados quatro trabalhos que abordam este conceito através de processos de aproximação ou acumulação; neles é relatado que os alunos fizeram referência a: mudanças no valor de uma quantidade como se ocorressem simultaneamente com as mudanças no valor de outra; a duas variáveis mudando continuamente; e, a um elemento que resulta da coordenação dos valores de duas quantidades que variam entre si, todos os descritores de diferentes níveis de raciocínio covariacional. Razonamiento Covariacional y Técnicas Instrumentadas en la Resolución de un Problema de Optimización Mediado por GeoGebra

The aim of this study was to document how different instrumental techniques are related to different mental actions during the work of university students in an optimization activity mediated by GeoGebra. To minimize the length of the fence of a rectangular plot, the students put into play mental actions, which were visible in the manipulations with GeoGebra, associated with different levels of covariational reasoning, and which allowed us to identify different instrumented techniques. It is concluded that the use of instrumented techniques involving concepts related to the derivative, such as the slope of the tangent line or the derivative function, make visible behaviors associated with mental actions of a more sophisticated covariational reasoning.El estudio realizado tuvo por objetivo documentar cómo distintas técnicas instrumentadas se relacionan con distintas acciones mentales durante el trabajo de estudiantes universitarios en una actividad de optimización mediada por GeoGebra. Con el fin de minimizar la longitud de la cerca de un terreno rectangular, los estudiantes pusieron en juego acciones mentales, que fueron visibles en las manipulaciones con GeoGebra, asociadas con distintos niveles de razonamiento covariacional, y que permitieron identificar diferentes técnicas instrumentadas. Pedagogic analysis of a situation: movement in two dimensions

We describe the results obtained by exploring the didactic potential of an activity. We performed this experience by developing a didactic sequence for the theme: Body Movement in two dimensions. We emphasize the analysis of the activity: Movement of a soccer ball. This helped us to establish the sequence students should follow in addressing their description, and to develop the conceptual knowledge and skills considered in the course objectives. It also allowed us to identify the possible interventions of the instructor of the course.<br /

Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980-2017 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Background Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD 2017 provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 282 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1980 to 2017. Methods The causes of death database is composed of vital registration (VR), verbal autopsy (VA), registry, survey, police, and surveillance data. GBD 2017 added ten VA studies, 127 country-years of VR data, 502 cancer-registry country-years, and an additional surveillance country-year. Expansions of the GBD cause of death hierarchy resulted in 18 additional causes estimated for GBD 2017. Newly available data led to subnational estimates for five additional countries Ethiopia, Iran, New Zealand, Norway, and Russia. Deaths assigned International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for non-specific, implausible, or intermediate causes of death were reassigned to underlying causes by redistribution algorithms that were incorporated into uncertainty estimation. We used statistical modelling tools developed for GBD, including the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODErn), to generate cause fractions and cause specific death rates for each location, year, age, and sex. Instead of using UN estimates as in previous versions, GBD 2017 independently estimated population size and fertility rate for all locations. Years of life lost (YLLs) were then calculated as the sum of each death multiplied by the standard life expectancy at each age. All rates reported here are age-standardised. Findings At the broadest grouping of causes of death (Level 1), non-communicable diseases (NC Ds) comprised the greatest fraction of deaths, contributing to 73.4% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 72.5-74.1) of total deaths in 2017, while communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional (CMNN) causes accounted for 186% (17.9-19.6), and injuries 8.0% (7.7-8.2). Total numbers of deaths from NCD causes increased from 2007 to 2017 by 22.7% (21.5-23.9), representing an additional 7.61 million (7. 20-8.01) deaths estimated in 2017 versus 2007. The death rate from NCDs decreased globally by 7.9% (7.08.8). The number of deaths for CMNN causes decreased by 222% (20.0-24.0) and the death rate by 31.8% (30.1-33.3). Total deaths from injuries increased by 2.3% (0-5-4-0) between 2007 and 2017, and the death rate from injuries decreased by 13.7% (12.2-15.1) to 57.9 deaths (55.9-59.2) per 100 000 in 2017. Deaths from substance use disorders also increased, rising from 284 000 deaths (268 000-289 000) globally in 2007 to 352 000 (334 000-363 000) in 2017. Between 2007 and 2017, total deaths from conflict and terrorism increased by 118.0% (88.8-148.6). A greater reduction in total deaths and death rates was observed for some CMNN causes among children younger than 5 years than for older adults, such as a 36.4% (32.2-40.6) reduction in deaths from lower respiratory infections for children younger than 5 years compared with a 33.6% (31.2-36.1) increase in adults older than 70 years. Globally, the number of deaths was greater for men than for women at most ages in 2017, except at ages older than 85 years. Trends in global YLLs reflect an epidemiological transition, with decreases in total YLLs from enteric infections, respirator}, infections and tuberculosis, and maternal and neonatal disorders between 1990 and 2017; these were generally greater in magnitude at the lowest levels of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI). At the same time, there were large increases in YLLs from neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases. YLL rates decreased across the five leading Level 2 causes in all SDI quintiles. The leading causes of YLLs in 1990 neonatal disorders, lower respiratory infections, and diarrhoeal diseases were ranked second, fourth, and fifth, in 2017. Meanwhile, estimated YLLs increased for ischaemic heart disease (ranked first in 2017) and stroke (ranked third), even though YLL rates decreased. Population growth contributed to increased total deaths across the 20 leading Level 2 causes of mortality between 2007 and 2017. Decreases in the cause-specific mortality rate reduced the effect of population growth for all but three causes: substance use disorders, neurological disorders, and skin and subcutaneous diseases. Interpretation Improvements in global health have been unevenly distributed among populations. Deaths due to injuries, substance use disorders, armed conflict and terrorism, neoplasms, and cardiovascular disease are expanding threats to global health. For causes of death such as lower respiratory and enteric infections, more rapid progress occurred for children than for the oldest adults, and there is continuing disparity in mortality rates by sex across age groups. Reductions in the death rate of some common diseases are themselves slowing or have ceased, primarily for NCDs, and the death rate for selected causes has increased in the past decade. Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.
