SModelS v1.0: a short user guide
SModelS is a tool for the automatic interpretation of simplified-model
results from the LHC. Version 1.0 of the code is now publicly available. This
document provides a quick user guide for installing and running SModelS v1.0.Comment: The code is available for download at http://smodels.hephy.at
SModelS: a tool for interpreting simplified-model results from the LHC and its application to supersymmetry
We present a general procedure to decompose Beyond the Standard Model (BSM)
collider signatures presenting a Z2 symmetry into Simplified Model Spectrum
(SMS) topologies. Our method provides a way to cast BSM predictions for the LHC
in a model independent framework, which can be directly confronted with the
relevant experimental constraints. Our concrete implementation currently
focusses on supersymmetry searches with missing energy, for which a large
variety of SMS results from ATLAS and CMS are available. As show-case examples
we apply our procedure to two scans of the minimal supersymmetric standard
model. We discuss how the SMS limits constrain various particle masses and
which regions of parameter space remain unchallenged by the current SMS
interpretations of the LHC results.Comment: v3: Version published in EPJ
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) in children and adolescents : a consensus on therapeutic strategies
Hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor (C1 esterase inhibitor) deficiency (types I and II HAE-C1-INH) is a rare disease that usually presents during childhood or adolescence with intermittent episodes of potentially life-threatening angioedema. Diagnosis as early as possible is important to avoid ineffective therapies and to properly treat swelling attacks. At a consensus meeting in June 2011, pediatricians and dermatologists from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland reviewed the currently available literature, including published international consensus recommendations for HAE therapy across all age groups. Published recommendations cannot be unconditionally adopted for pediatric patients in German-speaking countries given the current approval status of HAE drugs. This article provides an overview and discusses drugs available for HAE therapy, their approval status, and study results obtained in adult and pediatric patients. Recommendations for developing appropriate treatment strategies in the management of HAE in pediatric patients in German-speaking countries are provided. Conclusion Currently, plasma-derived C1 inhibitor concentrate is considered the best available option for the treatment of acute HAE-C1-INH attacks in pediatric patients in German-speaking countries, as well as for short-term and long-term prophylaxis
Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
Reporting for LHC hardware commissioning campaigns
The LHC will be qualified for the restart of physics operation during a Hardware Commissioning Campaign, in which up to 10000 tests will have to be tracked and analysed on more than 1700 circuits. The AccTesting framework orchestrates this campaign according to a planning defined by LHC operators and system experts. Using a reporting tool like JasperReports will allow the AccTesting Framework to expose concise and accurate information to system experts and coordination committees about the executed tests and test plans
SModelS v1.1 user manual: Improving simplified model constraints with efficiency maps
International audienceSModelS is an automatized tool for the interpretation of simplified model results from the LHC. It allows to decompose models of new physics obeying a Z2 symmetry into simplified model components, and to compare these against a large database of experimental results. The first release of SModelS, v1.0, used only cross section upper limit maps provided by the experimental collaborations. In this new release, v1.1, we extend the functionality of SModelS to efficiency maps. This increases the constraining power of the software, as efficiency maps allow to combine contributions to the same signal region from different simplified models. Other new features of version 1.1 include likelihood and χ2 calculations, extended information on the topology coverage, an extended database of experimental results as well as major speed upgrades for both the code and the database. We describe in detail the concepts and procedures used in SModelS v1.1, explaining in particular how upper limits and efficiency map results are dealt with in parallel. Detailed instructions for code usage are also provided
Somatosensory Abnormalities for Painful and Innocuous Stimuli at the Back and at a Site Distinct from the Region of Pain in Chronic Back Pain Patients
<div><p>Chronic low back pain (CLBP) was shown to be associated with pathophysiological changes at several levels of the sensorimotor system. Changes in sensory thresholds have been reported but complete profiles of Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) were only rarely obtained in CLBP patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate comprehensive QST profiles in CLBP at the painful site (back) and at a site distinct from their painful region (hand) and to compare these data with similar data in healthy controls. We found increased detection thresholds in CLBP patients compared to healthy controls for all innocuous stimuli at the back and extraterritorial to the painful region at the hand. Additionally, CLBP patients showed decreased pain thresholds at both sites. Importantly, there was no interaction between the investigated site and group, i.e. thresholds were changed both at the affected body site and for the site distinct from the painful region (hand). Our results demonstrate severe, widespread changes in somatosensory sensitivity in CLBP patients. These widespread changes point to alterations at higher levels of the neuraxis or/and to a vulnerability to nociceptive plasticity in CLBP patients.</p> </div
