What light does Matthewâs use of Mark in Matthew 1â4 throw on Matthewâs theological location?
This article approaches the issue of Matthewâs theological context by examining Matthewâs use of Mark, including through redaction and supplementation, in Matthew 1â4. This is undertaken in two parts: Matthew 1â2, which is largely additional material, and Matthew 3â4, followed by a concluding assessment. Issues addressed or alluded to in these chapters frequently find resonance in the remainder of Matthewâs gospel and so give important clues about Matthewâs concerns and their relevance for understanding its context. Such issues include the importance of messiahship; continuity with Israel, but also with John the Baptist and the Church; defence against slander; heightened christological claims; soteriology; Gentile mission; the status of Torah; and Jesus as judge to come. The article suggests a location within a Jewish religious context with a Jewish self-understanding, separate from the synagogue, but claiming to belong where its opponents would claim it did not; and a Christian tradition where the approach of âQâ to Torah is upheld in contrast to Markâs, while embracing and expanding Markâs Christology and restoring the common understanding of Gentile mission as a post- Easter phenomenon
Same-sex relationships : a 1st-century perspective
Read in the light of other Jewish literature of the time, not least, Philo of Alexandria, Paulâs
comments in Romans 1 about same-sex relations should be seen as a rhetorical ploy to gain
a sympathetic hearing for his argument from the Roman recipients of his letter by appealing
to common ground in deploring the sins of the Gentile world before turning to challenge
them about the fact that all have sinned, and so need the good news of Godâs righteousness
revealed in Christ. Typically Paulâs focus is not just acts, but attitude and misdirected
passions, which he sees as the result of misdirected and perverted understandings of God.
Based on the Genesis creation stories, Paul assumes that all people are heterosexual and that
the prohibitions of Leviticus should apply also to lesbian relations. Where these assumptions
are not shared, Paulâs conclusions must be revisited in the light of informed compassion and

Exhaled Nitric Oxide is Not a Biomarker for Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
To reduce transmission of tuberculosis (TB) in resource-limited countries where TB remains a major cause of mortality, novel diagnostic tools are urgently needed. We evaluated the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) as an easily measured, noninvasive potential biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment response in participants with pulmonary TB including multidrug resistant-TB in Lima, Peru. In a longitudinal study however, we found no differences in baseline median FeNO levels between 38 TB participants and 93 age-matched controls (13 parts per billion [ppb] [interquartile range (IQR) = 8-26] versus 15 ppb [IQR = 12-24]), and there was no change over 60 days of treatment (15 ppb [IQR = 10-19] at day 60). Taking this and previous evidence together, we conclude FeNO is not of value in either the diagnosis of pulmonary TB or as a marker of treatment response
The Safe Lambda Calculus
Safety is a syntactic condition of higher-order grammars that constrains
occurrences of variables in the production rules according to their
type-theoretic order. In this paper, we introduce the safe lambda calculus,
which is obtained by transposing (and generalizing) the safety condition to the
setting of the simply-typed lambda calculus. In contrast to the original
definition of safety, our calculus does not constrain types (to be
homogeneous). We show that in the safe lambda calculus, there is no need to
rename bound variables when performing substitution, as variable capture is
guaranteed not to happen. We also propose an adequate notion of beta-reduction
that preserves safety. In the same vein as Schwichtenberg's 1976
characterization of the simply-typed lambda calculus, we show that the numeric
functions representable in the safe lambda calculus are exactly the
multivariate polynomials; thus conditional is not definable. We also give a
characterization of representable word functions. We then study the complexity
of deciding beta-eta equality of two safe simply-typed terms and show that this
problem is PSPACE-hard. Finally we give a game-semantic analysis of safety: We
show that safe terms are denoted by `P-incrementally justified strategies'.
Consequently pointers in the game semantics of safe lambda-terms are only
necessary from order 4 onwards
Sarcoendoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+ ATPase. A Critical Target in Chlorine InhalationâInduced Cardiotoxicity
Autopsy specimens from human victims or experimental animals that die due to acute chlorine gas exposure present features of cardiovascular pathology. We demonstrate acute chlorine inhalationâinduced reduction in heart rate and oxygen saturation in rats. Chlorine inhalation elevated chlorine reactants, such as chlorotyrosine and chloramine, in blood plasma. Using heart tissue and primary cardiomyocytes, we demonstrated that acute high-concentration chlorine exposure in vivo (500 ppm for 30 min) caused decreased total ATP content and loss of sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) activity. Loss of SERCA activity was attributed to chlorination of tyrosine residues and oxidation of an important cysteine residue, cysteine-674, in SERCA, as demonstrated by immunoblots and mass spectrometry. Using cardiomyocytes, we found that chlorine-induced cell death and damage to SERCA could be decreased by thiocyanate, an important biological antioxidant, and by genetic SERCA2 overexpression. We also investigated a U.S. Food and Drug Administrationâapproved drug, ranolazine, used in treatment of cardiac diseases, and previously shown to stabilize SERCA in animal models of ischemiaâreperfusion. Pretreatment with ranolazine or istaroxime, another SERCA activator, prevented chlorine-induced cardiomyocyte death. Further investigation of responsible mechanisms showed that ranolazine- and istaroxime-treated cells preserved mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP after chlorine exposure. Arctic hydroclimate variability during the last 2000 years: current understanding and research challenges
Reanalysis data show an increasing trend in
Arctic precipitation over the 20th century, but changes are not
homogenous across seasons or space. The observed hydroclimate changes
are expected to continue and possibly accelerate in the coming century,
not only affecting pan-Arctic natural ecosystems and human activities,
but also lower latitudes through the atmospheric and ocean circulations.
However, a lack of spatiotemporal observational data makes reliable
quantification of Arctic hydroclimate change difficult, especially in a
long-term context. To understand Arctic hydroclimate and its variability
prior to the instrumental record, climate proxy records are needed. The
purpose of this review is to summarise the current understanding of
Arctic hydroclimate during the past 2000Â years. First, the paper reviews
the main natural archives and proxies used to infer past hydroclimate
variations in this remote region and outlines the difficulty of
disentangling the moisture from the temperature signal in these records.
Second, a comparison of two sets of hydroclimate records covering the
Common Era from two data-rich regions, North America and Fennoscandia,
reveals inter- and intra-regional differences. Third, building on
earlier work, this paper shows the potential for providing a
high-resolution hydroclimate reconstruction for the Arctic and a
comparison with last-millennium simulations from fully coupled climate
models. In general, hydroclimate proxies and simulations indicate that
the Medieval Climate Anomaly tends to have been wetter than the Little
Ice Age (LIA), but there are large regional differences. However, the
regional coverage of the proxy data is inadequate, with distinct data
gaps in most of Eurasia and parts of North America, making robust
assessments for the whole Arctic impossible at present. To fully assess
pan-Arctic hydroclimate variability for the last 2Â millennia, additional
proxy records are required.</p
Genetic mechanisms of critical illness in COVID-19.
Host-mediated lung inflammation is present1, and drives mortality2, in the critical illness caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Host genetic variants associated with critical illness may identify mechanistic targets for therapeutic development3. Here we report the results of the GenOMICC (Genetics Of Mortality In Critical Care) genome-wide association study in 2,244 critically ill patients with COVID-19 from 208 UK intensive care units. We have identified and replicated the following new genome-wide significant associations: on chromosome 12q24.13 (rs10735079, PÂ =Â 1.65Â ĂÂ 10-8) in a gene cluster that encodes antiviral restriction enzyme activators (OAS1, OAS2 and OAS3); on chromosome 19p13.2 (rs74956615, PÂ =Â 2.3Â ĂÂ 10-8) near the gene that encodes tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2); on chromosome 19p13.3 (rs2109069, PÂ =Â 3.98Â ĂÂ Â 10-12) within the gene that encodes dipeptidyl peptidase 9 (DPP9); and on chromosome 21q22.1 (rs2236757, PÂ =Â 4.99Â ĂÂ 10-8) in the interferon receptor gene IFNAR2. We identified potential targets for repurposing of licensed medications: using Mendelian randomization, we found evidence that low expression of IFNAR2, or high expression of TYK2, are associated with life-threatening disease; and transcriptome-wide association in lung tissue revealed that high expression of the monocyte-macrophage chemotactic receptor CCR2 is associated with severe COVID-19. Our results identify robust genetic signals relating to key host antiviral defence mechanisms and mediators of inflammatory organ damage in COVID-19. Both mechanisms may be amenable to targeted treatment with existing drugs. However, large-scale randomized clinical trials will be essential before any change to clinical practice

This article examines the impact of the widespread pattern of unequal age at marriage which led men to conclude that not only were their wives less experienced and mature, they were also inferior by nature. It examines the ideological underpinning for the view of womenâs inferiority in Plato and the Genesis creation stories, especially in their Greek translation. It then traces the way this value system found expression in the traditional allocation of gender roles, women taking responsibility for the internal affairs of the household and men for the external affairs, including public discourse. There were exceptions both within Judaism and within the early Christian movement. These and the egalitarian thoughts in Christian beginnings had the potential to subvert these norms, over time, but a long time
