    Trends in cloud cover from 1960 to 2005 over South Africa

    Seasonal trends in low and total cloud cover, as well as for associated climate variables diurnal temperature range (DTR) and number of rain days, are investigated for South Africa. It is also investigated whether the observed trends and variability in cloud cover could be related to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, which has a major influence on the variability of summer rainfall in South Africa. These trends have not been investigated recently and in such detail. In the light of the climate change debate, updated studies of historical climate change are important, especially for regions and climate variables of which such studies are not published often. Seasonal trends of daily means were examined from quality-controlled data time series of 28 climate stations over South Africa, for the period 1960 to 2005. Regional trends could be determined by averaging series of stations showing similar trends, within areas delineated in such a way that the trend of the averaged series would be statistically significant. In this way the intra-seasonal spatial variability of same trend regions, as well as the spatial relationships between trends of the different climate variables under discussion, could be established. The main results, taking all seasons into account, is a general decrease in mean daily low cloud cover, and to a lesser extent total cloud cover, over most of South Africa, but an increase in the south and south-west of the country. However, the sizes of same trend regions show considerable variability between seasons. While trends in DTR and rain days are the opposite and the same, respectively, of trends in cloud cover in most cases, it is shown that this is not always the case. A region covering the northern, central and western interior of South Africa, with late-summer (JFM) cloud cover negatively correlated with equatorial Pacific sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), shows only a non-significant decrease in total and low cloud cover for JFM, which corresponds to a non-significant increase in equatorial Pacific SSTs during the same period.Keywords: cloud cover, climate change, trends, diurnal temperature range, rainfal

    Historical rainfall trends in South Africa: 1921–2015

    The aim of this study is to update the analysis of historical rainfall trends with reference to the work from previous studies, through optimizing the highest spatial resolution with the longest possible period of analysis, i.e., 1921–2015. Two interlinked datasets, namely the district rainfall and individual rainfall stations datasets were used for the trend analyses, namely, daily time series of 60 individual rainfall stations and the daily district rainfall of 88 of 94 rainfall districts in South Africa. The extreme precipitation indices defined by the World Meteorological Organization Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices were applied. In general, the results show an increase in rainfall for most rainfall stations in the southern interior of South Africa, and indications of decreases in rainfall in the far northern and north-eastern parts. The increase in the annual rainfall in the south is reflected in the seasonal trends, where summer rainfall shows a similar increase, but also extends into the central interior. For other seasons, most of the country shows no significant historical trends in annual total rainfall. From the extreme rainfall analyses, an increase in daily rainfall extremes in the southern to western interior is apparent. Also, most of the country experienced increases in the intensity of daily rainfall, which confirms global results in general. Decreases in rainfall from wet spells were noted in most places over the east and north-east, while the southern and eastern parts along the escarpment experienced shorter annual dry spells. This study improves on previous studies in the region by more than doubling the analysis period, largely eliminating the influence that decadal-scale cycles might have on analyses over shorter periods. However, some differences in the trend results compared to previous studies are apparent, e.g., less pronounced drying in the east and the previously observed increase in rainfall in the western and southern interior not extending as far as the south-western Cape.     Phenotypic differences in Schistosoma mattheei ova from populations sympatric and allopatric to S. haematobium

    Schistosoma mattheei ova were collected from cattle in different localities in South Africa and after hatching, miracidia were used to infest Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus. Cercariae harvested from these snails were used to infest the definitive host Praomys (Mastomys) coucha and eggs from the resulting female S. mattheei were collected. These ova were compared with a Schistosoma haematobium X S. mattheei hybrid similarly collected from an infested P. (M.) coucha. The results indicate that S. mattheei populations which are sympatric to S. haematobium possess S. haematobium characteristics. It is suggested that the gene pools of populations of the parasite in these areas are infiltrated with S. haematobium genes via the S. mattheei X S. haematobium hybrid originating from human hosts.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Evaluation of a semi-automated software program for the identification of vertebral fractures in children.

    AIM: To assess observer reliability and diagnostic accuracy in children, of a semi-automated six-point technique developed for vertebral fracture (VF) diagnosis in adults, which records percentage loss of vertebral body height. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a semi-automated software program, five observers independently assessed T4 to L4 from the lateral spine radiographs of 137 children and adolescents for VF. A previous consensus read by three paediatric radiologists using a simplified algorithm-based qualitative technique (i.e., no software involved) served as the reference standard. RESULTS: Of a total of 1,781 vertebrae, 1,187 (67%) were adequately visualised according to three or more observers. Interobserver agreement in vertebral readability for each vertebral level for five observers ranged from 0.05 to 0.47 (95% CI: -0.19, 0.76). Intra-observer agreement using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) ranged from 0.25 to 0.61. The overall sensitivity and specificity were 18% (95% CI: 14-22) and 97% (95% CI: 97-98), respectively. CONCLUSION: In contrast to adults, the six-point technique assessing anterior, middle, and posterior vertebral height ratios is neither satisfactorily reliable nor sensitive for VF diagnosis in children. Training of the software on paediatric images is required in order to develop a paediatric standard that incorporates not only specific vertebral body height ratios but also the age-related physiological changes in vertebral shape that occur throughout childhood

    Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a patient with proteasome-associated autoinflammatory syndrome (PRAAS)

    Background: Proteasome-associated autoinflammatory syndromes (PRAASs) form a family of recently described rare autosomal recessive disorders of disturbed proteasome assembly and proteolytic activity caused by mutations in genes coding for proteasome subunits. The treatment options for these proteasome disorders consist of lifelong immunosuppressive drugs or Janus kinase inhibitors, which may have partial efficacy and noticeable side effects. Because proteasomes are ubiquitously expressed, it is unknown whether hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) may be a sufficient treatment option. Objective: Our aim was to report the case of a young boy with a treatment-resistant cutaneous vasculitis that was initially suspected to be associated with a gene variant in SH2D1A. Methods: Whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify the genetic defect. Molecular and functional analyses were performed to assess the impact of variants on proteasomal function. The immune characterization led to the decision to perform HSCT on our patient and conduct follow-up over the 7-year period after the transplant. Because loss of myeloid chimerism after the first HSCT was associated with relapse of autoinflammation, a second HSCT was performed. Results: After the successful second HSCT, the patient developed mild symptoms of lipodystrophy, which raised the suspicion of a PRAAS. Genetic analysis revealed 2 novel heterozygous variants in PSMB4 (encoding proteasomal subunit beta 7). Retrospective analysis of patient cells stored before the first HSCT and patient cells obtained after the second HSCT demonstrated that HSCT successfully rescued proteasome function, restored protein homeostasis, and resolved the interferon-stimulated gene signature. Furthermore, successful HSCT alleviated the autoinflammatory manifestations in our patient.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.     Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters
