    Cognitive Fusion Mediates the Relationship between Dispositional Mindfulness and Negative Affects: A Study in a Sample of Spanish Children and Adolescent School Students

    Nowadays, mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have experienced a remarkable development of studies among childhood and adolescent interventions. For this reason, dispositional mindfulness (DM) measures for children and adolescents have been developed to determine the e ectiveness of MBI at this age stage. However, little is known about how key elements of DM (for example, cognitive de/fusion or experiential avoidance that both confirm psychological inflexibility) are involved in the mechanisms of the children and adolescents’ mental health outcomes. This research examined the mediating e ect of cognitive fusion between DM and anxiety and other negative emotional states in a sample of 318 Spanish primary-school students (aged between 8 and 16 years, M = 11.24, SD = 2.19, 50.8% males). Participants completed the AFQ-Y (Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for youth), which is a measure of psychological inflexibility that encompasses cognitive defusion and experiential avoidance; CAMM (DM for children and adolescents), PANAS-N (positive and negative a ect measure for children, Spanish version of PANASC), and STAIC (an anxiety measure for children). The study accomplished ethical standards. As MBI relevant literature has suggested, cognitive defusion was a significant mediator betweenDMand symptoms of both negative emotions and anxiety in children and adolescents. However, experiential avoidance did not show any significant mediating relationship. Probably, an improvement of the assessment of experiential avoidance is needed. MBI programs for children and adolescents may include more activities for reducing e ects of the cognitive defusion on their emotional distress

    Influence of left bundle branch block on the electrocardiographic changes induced by acute coronary artery occlusion of distinct location and duration

Results: Ablation induced LBBB showed QRS widening, loss of r wave in V1, and predominant R waves in V2 to V9. After 5 min of ischemia the occluded artery could be identified in all cases: the LAD by R waves and ST elevation in V1-V3; the LCX by both ST segment elevation in II, III, aVF, V7 to V9 and ST segment depression in V1 to V4; and the RCA by ST depression and new S-waves in all precordial leads. Three hours after coronary occlusion, ST segment changes declined progressively and only the LAD occlusion could be reliably recognized. Conclusion: LBBB did not mask the ECG recognition of the occluded coronary artery during the first 60 min of ischemia, but 3 h later only the LAD occlusion could be reliably identified. ST elevation in leads V7 to V9 is specific of LCX occlusion and it could be useful in the diagnosis of acute myocardial ischemia in the presence of LBBB

    Photoluminescence Enhancement by Band Alignment Engineering in MoS2/FePS3 van der Waals Heterostructures

    Single-layer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (2H-TMDs) display robust excitonic photoluminescence emission, which can be improved by controlled changes to the environment and the chemical potential of the material. However, a drastic emission quench has been generally observed when TMDs are stacked in van der Waals heterostructures, which often favor the nonradiative recombination of photocarriers. Herein, we achieve an enhancement of the photoluminescence of single-layer MoS2 on top of van der Waals FePS3. The optimal energy band alignment of this heterostructure preserves light emission of MoS2 against nonradiative interlayer recombination processes and favors the charge transfer from MoS2, an n-type semiconductor, to FePS3, a p-type narrow-gap semiconductor. The strong depletion of carriers in the MoS2 layer is evidenced by a dramatic increase in the spectral weight of neutral excitons, which is strongly modulated by the thickness of the FePS3 underneath, leading to the increase of photoluminescence intensity.     Sex-related differences of fatty acid-binding protein 4 and leptin levels in atrial fibrillation

    Aims: Adiposity plays a key role in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Our aim was to study the sex differences in adipokines levels according to AF burden. Methods and results: Two independent cohorts of patients were studied: (i) consecutive patients with AF undergoing catheter ablation (n = 217) and (ii) a control group (n = 105). (i) Adipokines, oxidative stress, indirect autonomic markers, and leucocytes mRNA levels were analysed; (ii) correlation between biomarkers was explored with heatmaps and Kendall correlation coefficients; and (iii) logistic regression and random forest model were used to determine predictors of AF recurrence after ablation. Our results showed that: (i) fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) and leptin levels were higher in women than in men in both cohorts (P < 0.01). In women, FABP4 levels were higher on AF cohort (20 ± 14 control, 29 ± 18 paroxysmal AF and 31 ± 17 ng/mL persistent AF; P < 0.01). In men, leptin levels were lower on AF cohort (22 ± 15 control, 13 ± 16 paroxysmal AF and 13 ± 11 ng/mL persistent AF; P < 0.01). (ii) In female with paroxysmal AF, there was a lower acetylcholinesterase and higher carbonic anhydrase levels with respect to men (P < 0.05). (iii) Adipokines have an important role on discriminate AF recurrence after ablation. In persistent AF, FABP4 was the best predictor of recurrence after ablation (1.067, 95% confidence interval 1-1.14; P = 0.046). Conclusion: The major finding of the present study is the sex-based differences of FABP4 and leptin levels according to AF burden.     Show your beaks and we tell you what you eat: Different ecology in sympatric Antarctic benthic octopods under a climate change context

    Sympatry can lead to higher competition under climate change and other environmental pressures, including in South Georgia, Antarctica, where the two most common octopod species, Adelieledone polymorpha and Pareledone turqueti, occur side by side. Since cephalopods are typically elusive animals, the ecology of both species is poorly known. As beaks of cephalopods are recurrently found in top predator's stomachs, we studied the feeding ecology of both octopods through the evaluation of niche overlapping and specific beak adaptations that both species present. A multidisciplinary approach combining carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope signatures, mercury (Hg) analysis and biomaterials' engineering techniques was applied to investigate the beaks. An isotopic niche overlap of 95.6% was recorded for the juvenile stages of both octopod species, dropping to 19.2% for the adult stages. Both A. polymorpha and P. turqueti inhabit benthic ecosystems around South Georgia throughout their lifecycles (δ13C: −19.21 ± 1.87‰, mean ± SD for both species) but explore trophic niches partially different during adult life stages (δ15N: 7.01 ± 0.40‰, in A. polymorpha, and 7.84 ± 0.65‰, in P. turqueti). The beaks of A. polymorpha are less dense and significantly less stiff than in P. turqueti. Beaks showed lower mercury concentration relative to muscle (A. polymorpha - beaks: 0.052 ± 0.009  μg g−1, muscle: 0.322 ± 0.088  μg g−1; P. turqueti - beaks: 0.038 ± 0.009  μg g−1; muscle: 0.434 ± 0.128  μg g−1). Overall, both octopods exhibit similar habitats but different trophic niches, related to morphology/function of beaks. The high Hg concentrations in both octopods can have negative consequences on their top predators and may increase under the present climate change context.British Antarctic Survey for assisting in the collection of the specimens for this work.     Biomechanical study of autograft anatomic reconstruction in lateral ankle instability

    Introduction: The purpose of this work is perform a biomechanical comparison of anatomic reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) with the intact ATFL. Materials and methods: We studied 18 fresh cadaveric ankles with intact ATFL. Each specimen was clinically assessed with the anterior drawer (AD) and varus tilt (VT) tests and the angular movement in the three spatial planes (axial, coronal and sagittal) was measured with an arthrometer using a sensor located in the talus. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the axial plane, between the intact ATFL versus the sectioned ATFL for AD test with p = 0.012, and for VT test with p = 0.013. Regarding the coronal plane, we also observed a statistically significant difference for VT test with p = 0.016. In the sagittal plane, there are no statistically significant differences in both maneuvers. No statistically significant differences were found when comparing the biomechanics of anatomic ligament reconstruction versus the intact ATFL. Conclusion: Autograft anatomic reconstruction of the ATFL showed biomechanical properties similar to those of the native ATFL, at the zero moment in a cadaveric model.publishersversionpublishe

    A bicyclic α-iminophosphonate improves cognitive decline in 5xFAD murine model of neurodegeneration

    I2 receptors (I2-IR) are widely distributed in the central nervous system. I2-IR ligands are associated with a neuroprotective effect but, as I2-IR structure remains unknown, the discovery of better and more selective ligands is necessary to understand the pharmacological and molecular implications of I2-IR. Recently, we described a new imidazoline-structure family which showed high affinity and selectivity for I2-IR. In vivo studies in mice indicated a neuroprotective role and revealed beneficial effects in behaviour and cognition with a murine model of neurodegeneration, senescence-accelerated prone mouse (SAMP8). Herein, we report a novel non-imidazoline-structure of bicyclic α-iminophosphonates family with high affinities for I2-IR. In vivo studies in 5X-FAD mice (a transgenic representative model of AD) and SAMP8 mice (a model of neurodegeneration linked to aging) showed an improvement in behaviour and cognition, a reduction of AD hallmarks and of neuroinflammation markers for the mice treated with the lead compound B06. After evaluating several pathways associated with neurodegeneration, we demonstrated that CaN pathway plays a critical role on the neuroprotective effects of I2-IR ligands on SAMP8 mice model. To rule out warnings of the novel family, we calculated DMPK and physicochemical properties for the novel bicyclic α-iminophosphonates. As well, we carried out drug metabolism, safety studies and in vivo pharmacokinetics for lead compound B06. In summary, we present a novel family of I2-IR ligands, its effectiveness in in vivo models and the possible neuroprotective molecular mechanism mediated by them. This highlights that the modulation of I2-IR by bicyclic α-iminophosphonates may open a new therapeutic venue for unmet neurodegenerative conditions

    Study of the gastroprotective action and healing effects of Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) against acidified ethanol- and acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in rats / Estudo da acção gastroprotectora e dos efeitos curativos de Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) contra úlceras gástricas induzidas por etanol acidificado e ácido acético em ratos

    Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. (Crassulaceae) is a commonly used species in traditional medicine in Brazil for the treatment of various diseases, including gastric ulcers. This research aims to evaluate the antiulcer aspects of Kalanchoe pinnata leaves. The LD50 value of the hydroethanolic extract (HE) of K. pinnata was 1341.46 mg/kg, after the in vitro cytotoxicity assay. In the phytochemical analysis, several flavonoids were identified in the HE and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) of K. pinnata. It was verified that the gastroprotective activity of the HE of K. pinnata involved prostaglandins and sulfhydryl compounds. However, the mechanism of gastroprotection of the EAF of K. pinnata is dependent on prostaglandins and nitric oxide. The ulcer healing activity of the HE of K. pinnata was also evaluated. According to the macroscopic results, doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg reduced the injury area, with rates of 33% and 39%, respectively, after 7 days of treatment (p &lt;0.05). Histological analysis showed regeneration of the gastric mucosa and re-establishment of the glandular architecture in groups treated with the HE (200 and 400 mg/kg). Antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD and GPx) were evaluated in the mechanism of gastric ulcer healing. The results showed that the antiulcerogenic activity was mediated by SOD. The anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was also evaluated; however, the HE did not show anti-H. pylori activity. Analysis of the results suggests that K. pinnata has therapeutic potential against gastric ulcers and that the flavonoids may be linked to the biological effects

    Gaia Data Release 1. Astrometry: one billion positions, two million proper motions and parallaxes

    Context. Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) contains astrometric results for more than 1 billion stars brighter than magnitude 20.7 based on observations collected by the Gaia satellite during the first 14 months of its operational phase. Aims. We give a brief overview of the astrometric content of the data release and of the model assumptions, data processing, and validation of the results. Methods. For stars in common with the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues, complete astrometric single-star solutions are obtained by incorporating positional information from the earlier catalogues. For other stars only their positions are obtained, essentially by neglecting their proper motions and parallaxes. The results are validated by an analysis of the residuals, through special validation runs, and by comparison with external data. Results. For about two million of the brighter stars (down to magnitude ∼11.5) we obtain positions, parallaxes, and proper motions to Hipparcos-type precision or better. For these stars, systematic errors depending for example on position and colour are at a level of ±0.3 milliarcsecond (mas). For the remaining stars we obtain positions at epoch J2015.0 accurate to ∼10 mas. Positions and proper motions are given in a reference frame that is aligned with the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) to better than 0.1 mas at epoch J2015.0, and non-rotating with respect to ICRF to within 0.03 mas yr−1 . The Hipparcos reference frame is found to rotate with respect to the Gaia DR1 frame at a rate of 0.24 mas yr−1 . Conclusions. Based on less than a quarter of the nominal mission length and on very provisional and incomplete calibrations, the quality and completeness of the astrometric data in Gaia DR1 are far from what is expected for the final mission products. The present results nevertheless represent a huge improvement in the available fundamental stellar data and practical definition of the optical reference frame
